Another thing, in Florida they have parking lot tests to get your license, I mean you drive around a small course inside a parking lot. That has to be one of the worst way's of testing someones ability to drive. The standard needs to be raised.
All my grandmother had to do to get a driver's license is have her uncle tell the guy she knew how to drive.
Thats what I was thinking. Anytime I go out to dinner with my family my dad always has about one or two beers/wines and he is ALWAYS exactly the same driver leaving the place. Everybody at restaurants has a glass or two of wine, if you got pulled over Im sure you would be under .08
This is why I asked the question. I don't actually believe that most other people actually believe that there's a problem with having a single drink. It's totally common for someone to have a beer at dinner and think nothing of it. Even the politicians who make the drunk driving laws do this. The police. Most everyone.
That's not to say whether it's right or wrong, I'm just trying to determine if the opinion on this board is different than the one I see in real life.
There was no value attached to my question - it was just a simple question.

I always just assumed if your 21 or over and you BAC is under .08 then your safe. Meaning the cop can't use the alcohol in you as a factor to give you a higher ticket or a dui.

Yeah, you'd think, huh? But the three problems with that are:
1. Unless you own a breathalizer, you really have no way of knowing what your BAC is.
2. Still, if you get in an accident, especially one where someone gets hurt or killed, they'll probably find a way to throw the book at you regardless of your BAC.
3. Perhaps your driving is even ever-so-slightly impared even if your BAC is less than .08.
Right, so if you are skilled and drive a BMW with all the nets to protect you. ESP,DSC,BA, I dunno whatever else. This also should come into play.
A skilled driver driving a car that can stop in a shorter distance than the highway code allows should be allowed to drive at a higher speed. Or something like that. hahah,
serioulsy, the show 5th gear did a test, they took a group of 'average' drivers, got them drinking for a day or something, then took a race car driver and got him drinking. The race car driver performed significantly better.
Another test was take a college student, have him drive around a road course, then have him spark a J. the results? He drove better when high.
The proof is in the pudding so they say.
I'd hate to say it, but the best and most interesting drives I've ever had were high.
I also think all automatic transmission cars should be outlawed.

Not true at all! The laws are there to stop people drinking and driving... simple as that! I can't believe you're even trying to argue this I suppose you think you're an above average driver RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!
If average drivers can power slide turns on dirt and gravel roads in "rally" style driving at high rates of speed with a manual transmission (and not crash) and consider this great amounts of fun, then yes I agree.

One day you will learn your lesson. Lets just hope its your vehicle vs. a tree, as opposed to vs. another vehicle.
I did learn the lesson. The lesson on how to drive a car most excellently.
If every one else did the same, accidents would be a rarity.
but no I'm wrong...it's the alcohol...nobody ever crashes their car sober...

It's pointless arguing with people who have their mind made up and act ignorant to any other points made.
Things happen. Natural, other's stupidity, whatever, you need to be not impaired to react to external variables is the argument. Not your own stupidity, which no amount of acohol or lack thereof is going to make a difference.

If by things happen meaning people who operate vehicles don't fully understand how they react to adverse conditions then yes...things definitely happen.

Well, Roland, few are as fantastic as you. That's something you're going to have to come to accept.
Being a competent and skillful driver should be the norm considering the amount of people that do it on a DAILY and ONGOING basis.

Then as I said above, it should be about making it more difficult to obtain a license in the first place. Sort that, then worry about raising the legal limit.

Which is why I made the suggestion that already licensed drivers should be able to pass an advanced competency test. People take driving for granted, and get lazy at it, and few really understand the physics behind it (and the limits of their particular vehicle), as a skill set...enter the automatic transmission.

Why even argue for advanced competency? Just raise the requirements. Make people pass tests with higher standards in order to renew. It's ridiculous to create a class system for drivers, because they all share the roads. Plus, good luck actually regulating that. Should these advanced drivers be allowed their own speed limits too? It's just a silly idea. Raise the standards across the board and go from there.

Increased speed limits? That makes no sense, part of being a good driver is also what you call being a safe driver. If I want to provide some extra assurance, of my own accord, by not having my life potentially ruined over a harmless one or two beers in a social situation by achieving an advanced rating, then it might be be desirable for some...perhaps many. It's going to cost money to take the test, so you can't force already licensed drivers to retest if it's not an issue for them.

If they consider that great amounts of fun, perhaps they're not mature enough to drive you think rally style driving makes you a better driver? Define 'better' and define 'safer' while you're at it

Rally style driving as in able to slide the car without crashing because you know how to hold the slide and put the tail back in. If you don't know how to drift the car, if you happen to get into a slide say...in the wet or snow on public roads the chances of you catching the slide are lower and the end result is a slide off the road, or worse... slide of another car.
I don't think you can argue that having rally skills will not make you a safer or better driver. So safer and better meaning not crashing in tricky situations.

Driving is a skill like anything else. Rally driving is at the apex of this ability in terms of achievement, as is formula one.
If you don't understand the concept of mastering a skill such as this and how that applies to the challenges of just regular everyday road driving (a far less demanding situation), I don't know what else to tell you.

You a fan of those sequential/F1 transmissions? They have improved in huge amounts since those earlier ones from the 90's.
They give as much engine control as a stick shift. Most even change gears quicker.

Also in an everyday car, VW makes a similar system, they have it in the GTI.
It's pretty sweet. (DSG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox
But for whatever reason I tend to drive just that extra bit better when I'm sitting with a manual. I'm not sure why they are not so popular in the US.
