Wow 3 years Ive been visiting the Pit for now and I had no idea there was a surfing thread. Way to go

Ive only read the first page of posts so not sure if this has been posted before but this is the Australian beach webcam sight.
    http://www.coastalwatch.com/camera/cameras_large.aspx?cam=3400&state=NSW&t=5:41:58%20PM&camName=Nth%20Narrabeen

Its currently on the beach that I mastered the art form...North Narrabeen here in Australia.

Water is pretty chilly here at the moment so been finding myself running most mornings as opposed to a paddle which sucks.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

    I have a question:

how does one get STARTED surfing? Do you just buy a board and go out there? How do you know if you're doing it right?

Well I taught myself... but I started when I was young. My friends and I would go out there and watch the older kids. You should find someone who already surfs and have them teach you.. or take some lessons.

your doing it right if you walk down the beach see one foot, onshore winds and see one tiny wall on a wave and think fuck yeah!!!!!!! or, you fall off stand up in the water and think, i wanna do it again :D:D
There is no right or wrong way with surfing, Every person has a different style, your doing i right if you are having fun and enjoying being o the water. :)

Plenty of surfing to be had in New England ! Not saying it is ever Epic here, but a great place to learn and see if its something for you. Just got back from the beach (Nantasket) and there were at least 25 people out there.
Here's a cool website for this area: http://www.nesurf.com
Check out the cams & photo page :)
PS-Oh yeah, I live in MA and my 13 yo daughter learned how to get up on the board over a three day period.

Yeah we definitely live in a good spot for waves. The beach where I grew up was 'consistently' the best break most days and there are always plenty of breaks to choose from.

Ive also noticed over the last few years that there are a HEAP of people taking up the sport especially females. In fact I have a client that (due to confidentiality) runs a surf school at a VERY popular tourist beach here and their financials are quite attractive. Business is good!!!!!!!!!
