I made it up to my secret spot recently to enjoy the fact that it wasn't raining. I took this picture with my phone as I was coming down the cliff. The waves were decent that day, not great.. 4 foot sets coming in every 20 mins. The break can be sick tho, and I've seen it at double overhead numerous times. and the floor is sandy and soft :D but the best part is that I've never seen anyone out there with us.. EVER!!
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.

Finally took my Laird SUP out the house on the weekend... and put it on the lawn - and stood on him for awhile...Leaned him up against the fence when I was done -- and along came some of my dogs and...well, let's just say he's a VERY bad dog!!

My husband brought Laird back inside for me. I still need a good paddle. Anyone know what's best for newbies?

NICE!!! The paddle really depends on where and how you are going to surf.

If you are going to be in calmer water then I would recommend a Whiskeyjack paddle. It's wooden and handcarved so they are really beautiful. They have a wider blade so it's good for beginners. You might want to tape it up in the beginning, or if you're in rough water... because they can get dinged up.

If you are going to be surfing waves then I would recommend a Werner Spanker or a C4 Waterman. They are composite and the blades are shaped, so that you can utilize them when turning on the face.

It's really a matter of preference and I would go in to your local surf shop and check them out. Rule of thumb is that they should be 7" taller than you.

Thanks for the info...I think I'm going to stick to mainly flat water for now...but I kinda want to buy only one paddle that will last a couple of years. But the closest "local" surf shops on Vancouver Island here have no clue what SUPs are (got mine in Vancouver)...and I've been warned to stay away from the Jordan River/Port Renfrew surf areas (near Victoria) because the established surfers are apparently dicks and do a lot of "popcorning" or whatever it's called when they drop rocks on your board to intentionally damage it. They'd have a heyday with Laird and I'd probably just end up crying...it's a shame though...They are so territorial, even people who come up from California won't both to head out to Jordan River.

Anyway, I'll just call the shop where I got the board and see if they have any paddles in yet.

Again, thanks for the info...for sure something to consider...

SUPs are great. Congrats on your purchase.
We have some at the club where I work...
Looks very majestic once standing up in the line up an just paddling around.
Of course nothing tops putting the paddle overhead while hanging ten!

No pics of me hanging ten yet, though I am the kid lying on the ten footer in the back. :D

Definitely go for the stronger paddle, because you're going to want to get in those waves eventually anyways.

Wow 3 years Ive been visiting the Pit for now and I had no idea there was a surfing thread. Way to go

Ive only read the first page of posts so not sure if this has been posted before but this is the Australian beach webcam sight.
    http://www.coastalwatch.com/camera/cameras_large.aspx?cam=3400&state=NSW&t=5:41:58%20PM&camName=Nth%20Narrabeen

Its currently on the beach that I mastered the art form...North Narrabeen here in Australia.

Water is pretty chilly here at the moment so been finding myself running most mornings as opposed to a paddle which sucks.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me.

    I have a question:

how does one get STARTED surfing? Do you just buy a board and go out there? How do you know if you're doing it right?
