OK...I know nothing about surfing - and I'm going to try to learn in Maui in about three weeks. I'm going for paddle surfing, cuz I think hanging on the the paddle will help my balance. My husband is learning regular surfing....and then we're going to check out Jaws! Just to look, not to surf!
Anyway, we'll be renting the board for the 8 days we'll be there...Anyone have any advice?be philanthropic0 -

Paddle surfing is very fun! I've tried it a couple of times..
Since you are starting out you should just paddle around some calm water for a while to get your balance, and then slowly ease your way into some small waves. The good thing about paddle surfing is that you use a big board. It will act somewhat like a flat canoe so you will have a lot more stability in the water. If you start getting good, then you can use the paddle as a rudder to steer you when you're riding the wave!
Tell your husband to rent a long board (atleast 9 feet) as well, because he won't have to paddle too hard to catch waves... the boards basically do all the work. Also, tell him to try not to go to his knees before he stands. That is a common mistake that many newbies make. It should be one fluid motion that starts from the pushup position and goes straight into the stance. He should place his board on the beach and practice his take off before he goes into the water. Just make sure you dig out a hole in the sand so you don't break the fins!
Also, I would recommend a quick lesson so you can learn the etiquette and safety that goes with it. Don't surf where there are going to be swimmers in your way because the boards can really hurt someone!
Take some pictures of Jaws too!!!! ... and then post them in this thread:DWhoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.0 -
Thanks, Trailer!! That's good info!
Hubby and I are both going for the two-hour lessons and then we'll be on our own...definitely won't be surfing where's there's people swimming, that's for sure!be philanthropic0 -

Big Wave Surfer Dies today in Monster Surf - Nor Cal
Monterey big wave charger Peter Davi dies surfing Ghost Trees
Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 4 December, 2007 : - - A big wave rider died Tuesday at the unforgiving surf break known as Ghost Trees, a Monterey County spot known for its fast-moving 20-foot and better waves. Peter Davi of Monterey lost his board and was attempting to swim to shore, but never made it, witnesses told authorities. Friends of the 45-year-old Davi lost sight of him and later found him floating in the water unconscious.
Monterey County Sheriff's Sgt. Dennis English said a department search and rescue team responded to a report of a surfer in distress, but Davi was dead by the time the team got to Pebble Beach. "It's just extremely high surf. Waves are crashing against the rocks, kind of dangerous," he said. "It's primo conditions for surfers."
According to the Mavericks big wave surfing contest Web site, Davi was one of the early pack of brave surfers to test themselves at Mavericks after word got around about its massive waves. Jeff Clark, the founder of the Mavericks surf contest, surfed Mavericks alone for 15 years before sharing his secret with close friends — including Davi. Clark described Davi as a "rambunctious big wave rider" and the two took a few surf trips together.
"He was one of the early guys that I was able to convince to come up and surf Mavericks with me. He was like blown away at how big a wave it was," Clark said. Davi's death came just days before the waiting period was set to open for the big wave surf contest at Mavericks off the shore of Half Moon Bay, where equally large swells rolled in Tuesday.~~~~~~ALWAYS HAVE A GOOD TIME~~~~~~
