    Wade Belak speaks out :

    Someone will 'kill' Avery

Belak: Pest will pay for his antics
By MIKE ZEISBERGER -- Sun Media

The Rangers' Sean Avery was at his ornery worst against the Leafs on Saturday. (SUN MEDIA/Alex Urosevic)

Kubina's injury rubs salt in wound

    Sundin gets support

Wade Belak predicts it is only a matter of time before Sean Avery gets seriously clocked.

Citing Avery's pre-game tomfoolery Saturday night as yet another example of why the instigator rule should be scuttled, Belak warns that the New York Rangers agitator is going to pay the price for his antics.

"He's pissing guys off," Belak said yesterday. "He'll bring harm to himself and not too many guys around the league are going to be sad to see it.

"If he keeps this up, someone is going to kill him. One day he's going to say something the wrong way and he'll be clubbed.

"And I'm not saying it will be by me, either."

Avery kicked off his act during the warmup Saturday when he gave Jason Blake a shove, then began flapping his gums at Blake and Darcy Tucker. Avery and Tucker ended up threatening each other with their sticks, but the incident went no further.

Avery, who ended up with the Gordie Howe hat trick -- a goal, an assist and a fight with Tucker -- pulled a similar pre-game stunt against the New Jersey Devils recently, talking smack at goalie Marty Brodeur before the Devils' David Clarkson entered the skirmish.

Belak said the instigator rule allows small superpests such as Avery to get away with his tactics without the fear of retribution.

"The league should do something, especially with that warmup crap," Belak said. "The instigator rule protects guys like that. He'll fight little guys like Darcy but you'll never see him pick on bigger guys like me and then drop the gloves.

"I remember Kelly Chase brought up the point at a players' association meeting but nothing ever came of it. I mean, we've talked about this issue for years."

Belak was not dressed against the Rangers, a decision questioned by Hockey Night in Canada's Don Cherry. During his Coach's Corner segment, Cherry criticized the Leafs for not suiting up their enforcer when they knew the always-feisty Avery -- aka The Pickering Pest -- would be at his ornery worst.

Belak rejects the notion making the rounds that there is no difference between Tucker and Avery.

"Darcy's an agitator but he doesn't say the type of personal stuff about your family that Avery does," Belak said. "It's ridiculous. If (Avery) ever starts chirping about my family like that, he'll get a stick over the head."

    Canadiens-Maple Leafs PreviewNov 13, 2007, 7:30 PM ET
    TV Information

    National TV:
    RDS (HD)
    Local Home:
    SNET-O

Just when the Toronto Maple Leafs were getting healthy, they started getting hurt again.

The Maple Leafs will be without defenseman Pavel Kubina Tuesday as they host the Montreal Canadiens (9-4-3), hoping to earn their third win in as many tries this year over their Canadian rivals.

Kubina is out indefinitely after injuring a ligament in his knee in Toronto's 3-2 shootout loss to the New York Rangers Saturday. The injury came just two games after veterans Bryan McCabe (sore groin) and Darcy Tucker (knee) returned to the lineup and the third game for Kyle Wellwood (sports hernia) and Mark Bell (suspension).

Despite Kubina's absence, the Leafs (7-7-4) are hoping to build on the momentum they gained over the weekend, when they took three out of four possible points, beating the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 before falling to the Rangers.

"Overall, it was a pretty good weekend," said Leafs goalie Vesa Toskala. "... I guess we have to be happy with that."

After goalie Andrew Raycroft shut out the Sabres Friday, Alexei Ponikarovsky scored two goals two minutes apart late in the second period Saturday to erase a 2-0 deficit against the Rangers.

"We had momentum and were pumped up and cheering for each other," Ponikarovsky said. "I was sure we were going to score another one."

But they couldn't, and goals won't come easily against Montreal, either.

The two Canadian "Original Six" franchises have been playing each other for almost 90 years, but much hasn't separated the teams recently. Eight of the last 10 games have been decided by one goal, one ended in overtime and four required shootouts.

Toronto has won each game this season against Montreal by one goal, including one in overtime. Montreal, though, has gone 7-2-1 in its last 10 games and split the first two games of its four-game road trip.

The Canadiens, however, are coming off a 3-1 loss at Ottawa on Saturday. They led 1-0 after a period - continuing their season-long stretch of not trailing after 20 minutes - but allowed three goals in the final 5:10 of the third.

"It's a hard one, not getting any points," said Canadiens goalie Cristobal Huet, who made 35 saves and has a 2.07 goals-against average this season. "Everybody played very well but you know, we can definitely play with them. The season is long and I'm sure it's going to be a lot of good hockey against that team for the rest of the season."

Montreal's offense has been held to two goals or fewer in the last four games, but Toronto, which has allowed an NHL-worst 65 goals, could be a welcome sight.

Toronto is second in the East with 59 goals, but has scored just 12 in its last six games, going 2-3-1 in that span.

No way could my nerves handle another loss to you bums.
3 pt night for Kovy. Game wasn't on TV so I couldn't tell if it was yet another AHL caliber snore fest or not. We won so I guess not. All you leafs fans should +1 Mtl tomorrow in the battle game ;)
  • We should have had this game. Completely outplayed the Canadiens everywhere except the scoresheet which sadly is the only things that count.

    1) Why did PM have Antropov, Sundin, McCabe out in a situation that should have been more like Kaberle, Sundin, Blake/Wellwood. Not enough speed against the speedy Habs.
    2) McCabe. Nice pass....even better read by Komisarek.
    3) Raycroft. Would it kill him to make a save in a pressure situation?

MTL outplayed you guys the last two games and lost. Nice shot count last night though, yikes.
I'd forgive McCabe last night's gaff, wasn't that bad. Nice read by Komisarek.
Smolinski completely let Wellwood score his first too.

And Antropov...well, he shouldn't be out at all. I've been saying that for years ;)

Yeah maybe Raycroft shouldn't have gave the 5 hole, but a pretty nice goal by a defenseman who isn't known for scoring beauty's, and a nice assist by McCabe on the play.

Still no RDS. I have another appointment for digital cable installation today. I refuse to take a day off to accomodate a utility company, however, so I might miss it yet again (already missed 2 or 3).
I don't think the McCabe giveaway was as bad a play as everyone seems to. Sure it led to the winning goal by the opposing team, but the play itself was innocent enough. Komisarek had the play read before McCabe started the pass, and everyone seems to gravely underestimate the reach Komi's got with his stick.

And 8 out of the last 10 games between these two have been 1 goal games. It's hard to watch sometimes.

    Leafs' Tlusty regrets controversial photos
    Jiri Tlusty

    The Canadian Press

    11/13/2007 11:43:22 PM

TORONTO - Teenage forward Jiri Tlusty of the Toronto Maple Leafs issued a statement Tuesday night regretting that pictures taken of him found their way on the Internet.

The pictures were apparently taken while the Czech native was still playing for the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds last season.

"I used poor judgment in this instance last season and I have learned a valuable lesson," Tlusty said in a statement released by the Leafs following Tuesday's 4-3 overtime loss to Montreal. "It will not happen again and I have no further comment."

Leafs general manager John Ferguson also issued a statement.

"Photographs were posted recently on the Internet without Jiri's knowledge or consent," said Ferguson. "He made a naive mistake as a teenager. It's a lesson in how something private can easily become very public in the Internet age. Hopefully it's a lesson that other people will learn from as well."

    Embarrassing times for Maple Leafs
    McCabe and Tlusty

    TSN.ca Staff

    11/14/2007 3:11:30 PM

Losing to the rival Montreal Canadiens is heartbreaking enough, but it was two other embarrassing stories that grabbed headlines in the fishbowl that Toronto fans call Leaf Nation.

Defenceman Bryan McCabe was the scapegoat again on Tuesday night, coughing up the puck to Montreal's Mike Komisarek and allowing him to score on Andrew Raycroft for a 4-3 Montreal overtime victory.

"It sucks," McCabe said after the game on Tuesday. "We played a hard game. Seems like it always ends up in a glaring error."

McCabe, who made the front page of the Toronto Sun last month for inadvertently scoring the game-winner on his own net, didn't have have Leafs head coach Paul Maurice in his ear after the obvious gaffe.

"There's not a lot of conversation after that," Maurice told reporters after the game.

McCabe was spared front page humiliation in the Toronto papers on Wednesday, but at the expense of rookie forward Jiri Tlusty.

The Leafs' 2006 first-round pick was the latest victim of the World Wide Web, as nude photos of the former Sault Ste. Marie Greyhound appeared on a Canadian gossip web site last week.

"It's tough in this city to censorize anything," said Leafs forward Wade Belak on Thursday. "I've been known to take out the trash naked from time to time. Now with all these allegations with Jiri I don't know if I'm going to feel safer out there."

The revealing pictures, which were taken by Tlusty himself last year with his camera phone, have since been removed after the Czech centre's lawyer threatened legal action. As expected, the team has been supportive of Tlusty through the last couple of days.

"It's obviously the price of being a young guy, coming in and playing for a month, having some success and having someone try to knock you down and embarrass you," said Belak. "We've lent our support to him and it's not a big deal, everyone's been caught with their pants down."

Such is life playing for one of hockey's hotbeds, and life doesn't get any easier for the team this week. The Leafs visit the Boston Bruins - who trail Toronto by just one point in the standings with three games in hand - on Thursday, and host the powerhouse Ottawa Senators on Saturday.

Leafs seek road relief against Bruins
    Maurice at the Leafs bench

    The Sports Network

    11/15/2007 11:43:40 AM

After dealing with a pair of home losses and the Jiri Tlusty story with the local media, the Toronto Maple Leafs hit the road for a bit of relief as they visit the Boston Bruins at TD Banknorth Garden.

Tonight marks the first of eight meetings this season between these old rivals. Boston went 5-3 against the Maple Leafs last year and has taken eight of the last 13 encounters overall between the clubs.

Toronto has also dropped four of six and five of its last eight tests in Beantown.

The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, have dropped two straight and five of their last seven contests (2-3-2).

The teams began the overtime session skating 3-on-3 after offsetting minor penalties were called near the end of regulation. Toronto's Bryan McCabe had his head down and did not see Komisarek, who intercepted McCabe's intended pass to Nik Antropov and broke in alone on Andrew Raycroft. Komisarek made the deke and slid the puck through Raycroft's five-hole to win the game for Montreal.

Kyle Wellwood scored two goals and Ian White collected two assists for the Maple Leafs. Raycroft, who made 21 saves in the loss, will start again tonight.

The Leafs are 4-3-1 as the visiting club this season and have won two of their last three road tilts.

The Bruins will try to stay on the winning track tonight after they ended a four-game slide last Saturday against the visiting Buffalo Sabres. Tim Thomas made 45 saves and Chuck Kobasew scored an incredible game-winning goal as Boston clipped Buffalo, 2-1.

Marco Sturm scored the other goal for the Bruins, who are completing a three- game homestand tonight. Boston is 5-2-1 on home ice this season.

Kobasew's spectacular goal came at 8:45 of the third period - just 32 seconds after Buffalo's Daniel Paille made it a 1-1 game. Boston defenseman Dennis Wideman fired a shot which hit Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller and bounced in the air. That's when Kobasew batted the rebound out of the air, between his own legs on the backhand, and past Miller.

It was Kobasew's team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Maple Leaf caught with pants down
    By STEVE SIMMONS, SUN MEDIA

This picture of Tlusty (front) with a male friend are still on the gossip website. Naked images of the Maple Leaf rookie have been removed. (ISTHISHAPPENING.COM)
TORONTO -- Toronto Maple Leafs' rookie Jiri Tlusty has been caught with his pants down.

And the naked images of him leave little to the imagination.

Tlusty, the once-hot Leafs callup, is suddenly the centre of hockey attention after naked photos appeared on the Canadian gossip website isthishappening.com late last week.

The photos were actually shot by Tlusty, according to his lawyer, Jerome R. Morse.

"Mr. Tlusty took these photographs of himself with his camera phone last year," Morse wrote in an letter, e-mailed to Zack Taylor of isthishappening.com. "As such, Mr. Tlusty is the owner of these photographs and any unauthorized publication of these photographs is a violation of his copyright."

Tlusty couldn't be reached for comment yesterday morning but in an earlier e-mail response to the website, he wrote: "I feel like s--t right now."

"I used poor judgment in this instance last season and I have learned a valuable lesson," Tlusty said in a press release issued by the Leafs last night.

"It will not happen again and I have no further comment."

Leafs GM John Ferguson added: "He made a naive mistake as a teenager. It's a lesson in how something private can easily become very public in the Internet age."

The photos have since been removed from the website after Morse threatened legal action, but they still appear online in other places. Other photos, including one of Tlusty sticking his tongue out close to a male friend, are still on the isthishappening.com website.

According to a number of sources, Tlusty took numerous photos of himself, posted them on his Facebook website and actually e-mailed a full-frontal nude photo of himself to a woman he met online.

All that happened before he joined the Leafs earlier this season but after he was the first-round draft pick of the team in 2006. The photos, circulated electronically among friends, wound up on the gossip website.

The Tlusty story is just the most recent example of youth tripping over technology and celebrity all at the same time. This has happened with people more famous, like Paris Hilton.

Leafs' coach Paul Maurice admitted yesterday he was made aware of the Tlusty situation recently and indicated the matter was being dealt with internally by the Toronto club.

"(Jiri's) handled it as well as anyone could handle it under the circumstances," said the coach. "It's an excellent learning experience for a young man."

Since posting the original photos, representatives of isthishappening.com have been interviewed by ETCanada and Much Music and website hits have grown from 50,000 daily, according to Zack Taylor, to more than 100,000.

"I feel bad for the kid," said Taylor. "But he's a professional athlete -- this is what happens."

Taylor called the reaction to the Tlusty photos "insane."

"This is bizarre," said a shocked Craig Hartsburg, Tlusty's junior coach. "He's a great kid, a great kid. I never had any issues with him.

"Does it surprise me that something like this happened? No. Does it surprise me that it happened to him? Absolutely."

Tlusty, who was in the lineup last night when the Leafs played the Montreal Canadiens, became almost an overnight sensation earlier in the season when he scored the first goal of his NHL career off of his butt against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Yesterday, however, it was other body parts people were talking about.

this is a funny little blip i just read off the Blueshirt Bulletin

And how about those Leafs? Surely they can find a way to blame Avery for one of their players posting nude photos of himself on the internet and another (the inimitable Wade Belak, he of the "kill Sean Avery" remark) admitting he takes the trash out naked. Well, maybe they can't blame Avery for all that, but they can blame him for losing -- for losing at least that one game against the Rangers. As they sink toward draft lottery land, mark my words -- they will win the first overall pick, and the league will allow John Tavares to enter this year's draft.

Schaefer leads Bruins past slumping Leafs

    Associated Press

    11/15/2007 11:18:34 PM

BOSTON - The Maple Leafs were a timely opponent for the offensively deficient Boston Bruins.

Peter Schaefer had a pair of third-period goals, Marc Savard scored 19 seconds into the game and Tim Thomas stopped 34 shots to lead the Bruins to a 5-2 win over Toronto on Thursday night.

The Maple Leafs, who have allowed the most goals in the NHL, were a welcome relief for a struggling Bruins' offence. Boston, held to two goals or less in its previous five games and eight of 10, also got goals from Marco Strum and Glen Metropolit.

It was just the second time this season the Bruins have scored five or more goals, the other in an 8-6 win at Los Angeles on Oct. 12.

Thomas, making his ninth straight start and his first since a 45-save effort in a 2-1 win over Buffalo Saturday, held the league's second-highest scoring team scoreless with 19 saves in the final period.

After having four days off to work on their offence and study the Maple Leafs, everything seemed to click for the Bruins.

"We saw video (of Toronto)," Boston right wing Brandon Bochenski said. "We saw the areas we had to be in to get chances to score."

Boston had more open shots than its had in a few games and continually worked Toronto's defence, the best evidence coming when Metropolit outhustled two defenders to make it 3-1 midway into the second.

"We didn't play well, that's for sure. We didn't play a full 60 minutes," Toronto centre Matthew Stajan said. "They scored on their chances. We had a few miscues on their goals and it just wasn't acceptable. We just weren't good enough. We've got to play better than that, there's no doubt about it."

Kyle Wellwood had a power-play goal and Alexei Ponikarovsky scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost four of their past five.

Former Bruins goalie Andrew Raycroft started for the third time in four games for Toronto and stopped 22 shots.

The Bruins jumped ahead 1-0 on the game's opening shift when Savard fired a wrist shot from the slot that caromed in off the right post after a feed from Glen Murray along the left boards.

Seventeen seconds after Boston's Mark Stewart was whistled for hooking, the Maple Leafs tied it 1-all when Wellwood slipped a backhand past Thomas from in close. Boston regained the lead 2-1 when Sturm scored off the rebound of Doug Wideman's shot 11:40 into the opening period.

The Bruins made it 3-1 on Metropolit's goal 10:16 into the second.

Ponikarsky's score cut it to 3-2 with 8:03 left in the second, but Schaefer broke in down the left wing and beat Raycroft with a wrist shot 2:11 into the third.

Schaefer scored on the rebound of Bochenski's shot 3:24 later, prompting the crowd to break into mocking chant of 'Ray-croft, Ray-croft'.

"We've been a team that's been offensively challenged," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "We've been doing our homework and trying to find a way to find the back of the net." Notes: Boston plays 11 of its next 13 games on the road. . Bruins injured D Aaron Ward, who missed his third consecutive game with a concussion, sat in the press box. . The Maple Leafs' LW Mark Bell not only lost a first-period fight to Bruins LW Milan Lucic, but he appeared to look to the linesmen to break it up. . Boston recalled rookie G Tuukka Rask to fill in for injured backup G Manny Fernandez earlier in the day.

Where is Even Flow's coverage of the event?

I have been on vacation and training on a new job here at work so I have been missing the thread. But after last nights game, well I had to find some time to come in and say....................Man the Leafs stink.

I probably have said it before but I will type it now. It will come down to two weeks left in the season and the Laughs will be more points out then they were last year and you will hear the finger nails (like on a chalk board) clinging to the last hope that the Buds are going to make the playoffs and vie for the cup. Vie for the cup? Now that is a statement that gets buried here in Toronto about 15 games into the season. Then it becomes, we will vie for a playoff spot and see if we can get through round one.

The reason I became a Dead Wing fan in the first place is the fact that the Laughs haven't won a cup since the year I was born (of which I have a little replica banner hanging in my basement) and then proceeded to put pathetic squads on the ice. You would have to not know anything about hockey to cheer for the Leafs in the era that I grew up in and it shows right up until this day. Bring in the junk and let go the draft choices who are showing promise. If you are going to build a winner then I can see waiting. But they have been building since 68 and came close in 93 and that was it. Knocking off the number one seed only to lose in the next round is not something to wear proudly on your arm. Banners count, the rest don't!

Straight from http://www.anotherverylongseason.ca we have some breaking news.

The Leafs will entertain the high flying team from Ottawa on Saturday. The way Maurice is rewarding his goalies by benching them after a shutout, you would have to wonder when they are going to start tanking the games and stop just plain old stinking. Look for the Sens to light up the red lamp and sunburn the back of the neck of whichever goalie the Leafs put in on Saturday. The way the forwards have been hitting the boards instead of the the net in the opposing teams end, you would think Maurice would dedicate a practice to standing in the slot and trying to hit the net for a couple of hours. May help them when they are on the powerplay or even strength. Look for a huge game from the Sens number one line as they have made the Sens have seemed to make the Leafs their whipping boys since a few early, upset, exits from the playoffs a couple of years back. Now that the Sens have two quality goalies it will be a lopsided rivalry for years to come.

    Yay!

It'll be a while before Montreal catches Ottawa if Ottawa keeps getting easy games like Buffalo and Toronto...sigh...

Fall Out Boy? Is that some sort of Simpson spinoff cartoon? ;)

Twice I have predicted the Laughs to get smoked and they win. So the lessen learned is when I predict a big loss go and bet on the Laughs to win.
