  • It's a big issue BECAUSE WE MAKE IT THAT WAY. I definitely feel that our world would be a lot better WITHOUT religion. As for government, I do agree. It is an institution that is a neccesity (sp??) to have order.

Okay. Like Jamie, I'm quite spiritual, not so much religious, the TEACHINGS of the bible don't mean much to me but the thought of religion does. I truly don't believe it's a bad thing and was never intended to be. :( This makes me so sad. What a sad world we're living in. For all the liberal way of thinking that's becoming popular, there will be a HUGE backlash. (People like the Phelps) and I'm sure there will be more of a majority of people thinking like them in the future. :(

When you look at any trend in life, it always comes back to bite you in the ass. (Does that make sense)?
  • what the hell are they protesting anyway? I don't really get their point. He played in Brokeback 3 years ago. What does that have anything to do with his death?

The only thing organised religion offers in terms of benefits over personal, internalised spirituality is a support group. Practioners of faiths like Taoism are as happy, moral and positive as christians. What you don't get are the negative aspects.

Could you explain that for someone like me, please? :D

I KNOW! He's not even gay! He has a kid! ...I guess they think he's an icon for gays?

True but even if he was gay, let's say.... what are they protesting?? "Heath you are not allowed to die a gay man or having played a gay man." I mean, seriously, these people are nuts and haters, which should be the exact opposite of what "Jesus" taught, right? I thought he loved everybody. I'm curious to hear what they are saying exactly and what their ordeal is.

They're following the bible! Duh!

Heh. I never read the thing... too long of a read. I didn't realize there was a part in there where one is supposed to protest at gay people's funerals. ;-)

Ok. I'm assuming, since you said you aren't particularly religious and see how it is a corrupting influence in the world at the moment, that the reason why you support it as a concept is because of the apparent benefits to the people that follow religions/the world in general because of those people following it.

What I am saying is, there are faiths which do not involve churches, do not involve blindly following a book which was written by MEN a mere 2000 years ago (which in the grand scheme of things might as well have been 2 breaths ago) and most certainly don't involve picketing funerals when people allegedly flout the teachings of those faiths. What I want to know is, what does organised religion have to offer the world that cannot be attained without it? And don't tell me "heaven" because I don't want to hear it :) I want to know what possible earthly gain there is to be had from organised religion.

Toucher and Rich on WBCN in Boston interviewed the lady from the church today, probably one of the funniest radio interviews ever. they pretended to be from a religious radio station, its kind of long but well worth listening to.

HAHAH! That's so funny yet so irritating. I understand the families frustration sometimes. The presenters should go back to school. (Still funny though, in a way).

    'chokehold' yes! (I can't believe I'm quoting her). :o

I'm not talking about BLINDLY following a book. If you open your heart, you will feel that everyone has a soul. Everyone. It has nothing to do with heaven and hell IMO.
Back on topic, and I said it earlier, not many people agree with the Phelps but it doesn't make them wrong. Life is very complex. Who is to say what's right and what's wrong? They've just taken it too far in our society.

Answer to your last question IMO, is that religion and a soul should be a beautiful thing. It's something you feel but can't explain. :( :o It should bring out the best in people. (Just for the record, I believe MAN created GOD) ... and rightly so!

I think we're having two different conversations! :)
  • looked at some articles on this online and saw this comment....

“You cannot live in defiance of God. He (Ledger) got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it's OK to be gay,” said Shirley Phelps in a statement sent out by the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church.

Absolutely out of control and I wasn't aware they also did this to fallen soldiers. That's disgusting.

sorry but organised religion is the most corrupting influence in the world today. I am all for spirituality. I consider myself very spiritual. I don't see why the fuck religion has to come into that.

The wonderful Mr. Biffo once said something - and I'm paraphrasing... "I'm not religious. But I believe that if religion didn't exist, humans would just find something else to kill each other over."
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

religion is for the weak.. its a mind creatine
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

no... SOULESS people are weak! We did create God (I think). It gives us a depth, a conscience and COULD bring out the beauty in the world if people weren't such followers, pesimists or shallow!

eh... go search for "Richard Dawkins Vs Teg Haggard" on youtube and see which one has depth and conscience :) I'm no fan of Dawkins but Haggard is a twisted, creepy piece of shit. Dawkins wants to understand the world, Haggard fears that one day we'll understand it without God. I know which side sounds more like winning...

define "souless" people...and how does a creation of God bring out beauty into the world? I don't quite understand...

To me, religion is a scam. It is a way to control and brainwash people in order for the hierarchy (in any religion) to prosper. And what you are saying about " if people weren't such followers, pesimists or shallow" - THEY ARE! Humans are stupid in the great scheme of things, and religion just adds to this stupidity. It was never designed to really "help" people. Have you ever read most parts of the bible? Most of it involves acts of creulty, abuse, and vengence - all human traits.

I understand your wishfull thinking about religion bringing out the good in people, but the only way that could possibly happen is if there was 1 single religion. Even then, we would probably find many issues to disagree on and kill each other over...

Did anyone see that they were out the front of the screen actors awards with a sign that said "Heath is in Hell" a reporter from ch9 in australia said to one of them "you know there are people in the world furious with you right now?" and she said "that's fine honey, it is his fault for commiting sodomy" (or words to that effect)

    That is just imo

I didn't really mean the part about being shallow pesimists, etc.
I still stand by what I said about God being beauty and not a scam but that's because I'm meaning in a spiritual sense and not so much religious.

i have no soul... i also know that i'd never join a death cult, i also know that i have no fear of hell... i also know that me not going to a church every sunday makes me stronger than the fools who do go... why? because i dont sit in my house and worry that if i dont go to church i'll be damned forever... the weak-minded people are trying to do everything right just to get into heaven, and they do the things that people tell them they must do... prey, church, etc.

i dont do any of those things as i have no fear of the consequences of not doing them.

thats strong willed, thats me making my own mind... me NOT being part of a flock.
