Man I feel much worse for the mice then the snake I shot.
Here's the difference: you kill because you don't like something, I (really the person at the pet store) kill to make another thing live. It would happen in the wild and it is mandatory for survival. If you actually ate the snake I don't think what you did was wrong, seriously.severed hand thirteen2006: Gorge 7/23 2008: Hartford 6/27 Beacon 7/1 2009: Spectrum 10/30-31

baby snakes cannot swallow live mice so the owner usually thaw the frozen pinky or fuzzies out and the baby snakes eat them.
snakes only eat once a week, so owners don't have their fridge full of frozen dead mice or anything like that.PJ- 04/29/2003.06/24,25,27,28,30/2008.10/27,28,30,31/2009

Do you have a big snake? These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.0 -
I know this is a "snake" thread, but my 8-year old son (and I) want a chameleon...any words of widsom, tips?
They just seem so cool and chilled out.
Thanks!I still want you all to "take care"--I am just damn tired of typing it.

He catches (well...every snake) but in particular he seems to like the inland Taipans as they are the deadliest snake apparently (according top him anyways).
If you get bit, is there any point to the anti-venom?
iow... is it survivable?
Actually there is a lot of point to the antivenom and the inland taipan is very survivable.
Even though Australian snakes are very deadly, (the inland taipan for instance has enough venom in a single bite to kill 60 adults), they also don't kill many people because of their short fangs.
All Australian Elapids (venemous front fanged snakes- the dangerous ones) have short fangs and when they bite humans, the majority of the venom is injected into the lymphatic system. The venom is a majority of Neurotoxin (affects nerves), with smaller amouns of myotoxin (muscels) and haemotoxin (blood).
Snake venom is much less dangerous when in the lymphatic system. It is only when the venom transfers into the blood stream that the effects of the venom occur. This transfer can be slowed down by staying still (the lymphatic system is a muscle driven system), and applying a compression bandage.
Even with an inland taipan- correct first aid gives you 4-6 hours survival time, so if you can get picked up and taken to the hospital in that time you will survive.
We had 3 inland taipans at my last job (Australian wildlife park) and they were very placid. They do however have the most taxic venom of any snake in the world. If they had longer fangs like many overseas vipers and elapids, it would be far less likely that anyone would survive a bite.
On a side note, one of my fellow workers was bitten by a 2.5m coastal taipan (3rd most venemous in the world) and survived. He did everything perfectly in terms of first aid and was at the hospital within 20 minutes, but he still could not work properly for many months and had to give up drinking for 6 months because his liver was wrecked. The footage is floating around on discovery channel somewhere.0 -

I always wanted to get a snake. I had lizards when I was younger but my mom wanted nothing to do with having a snake in the house. I actually went through a phase where I wanted to be a herpetologist, went to reptile shows and everything.6-27-98 Alpine Valley

I actually just went on youtube to see how a corn snake actually ate a mouse. Pretty interesting. But the comments on every video is constant argument on how its cruel. Its so bullshit? humans eat meat... isn't that not cruel? Humans eat loads of animals yet feeding a snake a mouse is cruel :S:S And what exactly do mice do in the world except annoy people :S0
