I hear ya man..I dunno ...having been real close to what happened here in NY with 9/11 and all and how we all helped each other out I like to think people can still be like that in sick situations like this..I cant sit there and watch another person get done up like that man..no way..I wouldnt be able to live with it..like every day I'd hate myself for not helping. Seriously. I mean like I said even if I got cut up real bad or something worse case scenario I got done up too at least i wouldnt have it on my conscience forever.
Ask those people what their thoughts and dreams will be like and ask them if they feel fucked up for not helping from this point on

not trying to say Im a hero man, but damn...to just sit an watch it???
no way I'd spaz the fuck out

Good for you, seriously. I've never panicked in a tense situation and ran away, so I like to think I would have helped here too. I don't mind being physically hurt, it has happened so much in my life that I have strange relationship with pain. Hell, even if he managed to kill me, I'd like to think I'd do some damage on my way out.

not if you prevent him from killing someone else by killing him. As for the other passengers, there really wasn't much they could do. Sounds like the whole thing happened in seconds, and he was probably dead by the time anyone could have gotten to him. Unless you saw the guy pull the knife out of his bag, I don't see what they could have done.once the poor bastard was stabbed in the chest once, his chances of survival had to be pretty slim, unfortunately
    Truth.
They make it sound like the guy was dead very fast, too. I fucking hope so.
What a brutal, disgusting thing for someone to do.

I'm always amused by people who think killing is an appropriate way to react to a killer.

Knock the fucker down, yes, give him a kicking even. Then let him rot in jail. I just find it odd that a person, who is so disgusted by murder that they would actually react so violently as to kill someone as punishment, would actually do it. The hypocrisy would be staggering, no?
you're trying to match adrenaline for adrenaline at that point bro..Your heads not thinking at that moment..you just wanna live or help and you do what u can. If it came down to almost killing the guy at that moment, what do u do..you stop?? and give him a chance to get at you again?
Ry..you're right..and I dont wanna judge the people who chose to live..trying to just speak for myself and if I was in that situation....sleep will def be lost, regardless absolutely and they will be haunted for sure, wether they reacted , helped or not.

Actually that is how I am all the time and everywhere. I never sit with my back to a room and I like to see the exits . Paranoid? Probably...

i think the word paranoid is overused by everyone.
i now prefer to think of it as a survival instinct. "paranoid" people are less likely to get stabbed in the back. so to speak.

if i'm paranoid, so be it.

  • It could've been fucking anything that set this guy off. The kids earphones could've been too loud and the guy just snapped.

I believe that the scariest thing, to most of us anyway, is we see all this shit along the lines of "Man kills man due to love triangle, Man killed in drug deal gone bad, Man kills wife after argument" that gives the impression that unless we place ourselves into situations we're okay, and nothing can get us. But stories like this make us realize just how much depends on the roll of the dice. Anybody could've been sitting in that seat, not doing anything. Unfortunately, you can't pull the covers over your head and hide from the monsters anymore. Heartbreaking.
  • there's a term for how people respond in situations like this. If I remember Psych 101, I believe it's called Fight or Flee, something like that. Supposedly, how you respond in situations like that is innate, and you have no control over it.

No, that is not what I said at all. Read my post again. (ha)
Did you include the rolleyes icon as sort of a tit-for-tat grade school response to my inclusion of said icon?

Anywho, you said that a lot of people on the bus could've organized into a mob of luggage-throwing vigilantes all within 30 or so seconds and that may have stopped the stabbing.

True. They've done research showing how brains repsond in high tense or life threatening situations and for most people they literally shut off. There's a sudden rush of pressure/blood to the brain and all logical thinking goes straight out the window. Fight or flight indeed.

Most people require a lot of training, military or otherwise, to be able to respond to that level of violence with any clarity.

If you can get behind him. It is a bus, there's very little room for movement. Depending on where the guy was, there may have been no way at all to have gotten behind him. But, if you decided you were going to make a move, here's what you'd be up against.

Moving down a bus aisle that is around three feet wide weaponless towards a person who just made it known to the world that not does he not mind killing someone, but that killing isn't enough. You're looking at a guy whose mind just broke and wants to hurt somebody so badly, that he will continue to stab and decapitate a person well after they are dead. And that the only reason the guy he killed is dead and you're not is because you weren't sitting behind him. Basically, you're staring into insanity, trying to decide if you're going to run it.

By the way, if you do run in, don't use a towel to choke him. Use something thinner. a belt or cord.

Plus you have military background training. We're talking about civilians.

Ladies, #5 is your friend. If you ever have to and you have a clean shot, punch the mother fucker in the throat and hit them with everything you have. You might kill them but it will stop just about anyone. Just make sure you connect or you are in real trouble.

Or, if you are behind someone, hit them in the back of the neck right where the spine meets the skull.

No shit. A lot of people laugh whenever we get into a situation that looks not so safe and I tell them if they can to punch the motherfucker in the throat. Even if it doesn't kill them they aren't going to be able to breath to continue to fuck around with you. Then you get the fuck away.

I first learned it from a war-crazed vietnam special forces guy. One of those people that cleaned up villages after bombing raids and ran several missions into Cambodia. A genuine bad ass mofo. He later became a crooked Portland cop with a bad cocaine habit. Smart, scary guy. He showed me a few things and taught me how to write (of all things).
