The other picture was J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the FBI. I think what was funny about the juxtaposition was J. Edgar Hoover supposedly liked dressing in women's clothes.
We can't see the lone gunmen anymore. They died saving everyone from a biological terrorist attack.
Skinner showing up was not random. Scully argues with the head agent that they need to find Mulder. He refuses to help, so Scully says she is going to go over his head. They mention later that Scully is accompanied by some "bigwig" FBI agent from Washington, who turns out to be Skinner. I thought it was a clever way of both bringing Skinner back and showing he has been promoted.

really, they died? was that on the X-files or their spinoff show?
and i know, by "random" i meant that he wasnt part of the plot, he just comes in to the rescue.

It was on the X-files, after their spinoff show didn't go anywhere. The episode is titled "Jump the Shark," and it was in season nine. It was one of the best episodes of the season.

I was like
BOO-YA!
hee hee.
She said "get me somebody with some balls..." and there he was! Loved it.
And I loved how once again it was Scully bailing Mulder's dumb ass out of trouble!!
I think with the theme music and Bush-they were trying to make a joke like maybe he was an "alien.."
I don't think there's significance to the picture of Hoover other than his historical link to the FBI
and yeah, the Gunmen, RIP :(
You are right! I forgot about the music. They used the X-fils theme very well in several spots. With the pictures of Bush and Hoover, I think it was meant to suggest both of them were aliens. Nice one Allie!

Is he a creative and interesting 'monster of the week'? Is he played well? Is he scary/psycho? Is there anything 'paranormal' about this film or the killer?
And yes I am asking for spoilers

Yeah, after all the luke-warm and bad reviews, I think I need a reason to go see this. I was planning on it but now I'll probably just go see Batman again.

Oh I'm definitely gonna see it, but I'm worried that in all this talk of the film in general, I've heard nothing of the villian... which probably means he was totally forgettable... I hope someone can prove me wrong.

scary and psycho for sure. There are actually two villians but they're working together. To give away what happens would give away the entire movie HLF.
NO Aliens or anything of that nature.
Billy Connolly's character supposedly has 'visions' of where the victims are, that's why they call in Mulder. Well actually they call Scully to see if she can 'fetch'
Mulder.
read the thread, there's the Skinner spoiler, which IMO when they call him in, that is badass and reason enough to see it. And apparently there's an after the credits scene which I entirely missed! D'oh!

well I can't take credit, I think I did read that somewhere in an online review but when I saw the movie and that scene-I thought the same thing. I didn't think about the connection to Hoover. It was a funny scene though.

not so much aliens as both being worthy of their own xfile investigation.
anyhoo i saw it tonight. the best episodes were always when the monsters turned out to be human. this was one of those. thought the music was just great. good job mark snow. i stayed til after the credits and actually could have done without the coda.

So, was this a film that only x-files nerds will like or is it also a good movie?

I kind of hope it's the former, to be honest.
I read a review which said it's basically a long drawn out episode. Nothing epic or spectacular and movie-like, just an old X files story from beginning to end. I almost wet my pants with excitement. My problem with the last one is that it just felt so epic on such a grand scale, and it ain't supposed to be. That's what ruined the later episodes. Less is more.

true. its nothing flash. but quite honestly if this is your(thats the collective you btw ) first exposure to the xfiles, you might come away a little less than impressed.
and oh i so wanted to punch xhibit in the face. totally annoying imo.

In spite of what Carter said, I think this was a movie for the fans of the show. It was not flashy or scary in the usual way the X-files can be, but it was darker from an emotional point of view. I also thought it was more intellectual relying more on the dialogue and other things to move the action along. I also think you had to know something about the X-files to piece together the dialogue.

Looking back after a week I feel I was too hard on the movie, it really isn't that bad.
I expected one thing and got another, so it took a week to get over

i've been feeling the same way.
but i'm still mad at Chris Carter. i read somewhere that depending on how this movie does, then he'll see if he can do another for the "grand finale." well, Chris Carter is stupid, in my opinion. he should've just done the damn movie he wanted to do in the first place and not released it at the same time as the new Batman movie.
ok yeah....i'm still bitter so nevermind

youre mad at chris carter cause he said another movie was dependent on how this one was received?
what i found interesting was scully working at a hospital run by some religious order. tis apparent shes still grappling with her own belief issues.
i also found amanda peet more distracting than the fact that billy connolly was playing a paedophilic ex-priest.
also when skinner was i introduced. i would have preferred he just appeared without scully basically pointing him out.

lame. i LOVED the series, but what was 'x files' about this movie?? where are the aliens, or flashing lights in a forest, hell, just through in a wolfman or something!? it was like an episode of CSI starring a psychic & xhibit.

so you were expecting aliens, flashing lights in the forest and maybe a wolfman?
some would consider psychic abilities xfile-ish enough to sustain the story. and lets face it, whenever religio/faith is involved in any capacity, well... thats the biggest x file of all surely. it was subtitled 'i want to believe' remember? and what is it we choose to believe? and how is that belief tested and sustained.

haha no i wasn't expecting those things exactly, as cool as a wolfman would've been
but just something a little more supernatural than 'those damn dirty russians!' (no offence)
that's just what i loved about the show when i was a kid and i do consider psychic abilities 'x-file worthy', i just wanted something bigger. maybe they should swap endings with indyIV?!

despite being a big fan of frankenstein, i actually wasnt too thrilled with the story line. but then i figured(after i chose to ignore that plotline altogether, cause it was crap), everyone in the movie was wanting to believe in something, from muldar wanting to believe in the ex priests psychic abilities through scully's belief she would find a cure for the little boy to the ex priest believing he would find absolution through prayer.

this may be of some interest, but there is an x-files comic series that just started. spotintz wrote issue #0 and it seems he will be writing more. the comic is pretty good, though i liked the movie and all, i think this would have been the better movie, though it lacks any of the character building that was in the movie, scully becoming a doctor and all. but for the monster of the week stuff this was great.

George W is like his own X-File.... That was the significance. Since he is president, his picture is up in ALL federal buildings.
