And when Pedro beat down Zimmer he 86'd him.

I know, but this is crunch time and one bad inning can really hurt :(

A team source confirmed to the Boston Globe the Red Sox will retire Johnny
Pesky's number (6) this weekend, during the final series of the year with the
New York Yankees. The official announcement could come as early as today.

that's cool ... he's been with the team for so long ... but, I thought one of the prerequisites was the player needed to be in the hall of fame?
Lucchino acknowledged the retirement of Pesky's number was an exception to the longstanding criteria for such honor, which in the past has been bestowed upon players who had played at least 10 years with the Red Sox, finished their careers here, and were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Unlike Williams, Doerr, Carl Yastrzemski (No. 8), and Carlton Fisk (No. 27), Pesky is not in the Hall of Fame.
`` We inherited a set a rules that applied to this question of retiring numbers and we have looked at that and considered that to be useful but as guidelines rather than firm rules,'' said Lucchino, who indicated the retirement will take place before Friday night's game against the Yankees. ``I think that Johnny Pesky's career cries out as exceptional and its length of term and the versatility of his contributions -- on the field, off the field, in the dugout, etc. -- are such that we considered Johnny a worthy exception to the rules that were set down before.''

Plus Saturday is his 89th birthday. Might as well retire the number while he's still in uniform going to every home game.
Seriously, could Dustin Pedroia muster enough to eeek out an MVP?
1st in the league in hits, runs, doubles ... 2nd in batting average ... 2nd in fielding percentage for all AL second basemen ...
There's Hamilton, Quentin, but, nothing far and away above the rest of the league in any of the categories they lead ... K-Rod enters the picture wtih 61 saves ...
should be intersting.

I think that after Quentin got hurt and barring the Twins making the post season on the heroics of Morneau, Pedroia is the front runner for MVP. Hamilton has like 29 rbis since the break and K Rod has a ton of saves but also blown 7 of them. You could make the argument that Brad Lidge of the Phillies has been more impressive season than K Rod with his 40/40 season and the fact the Phillies are 75-0 having a lead in the 9th. (I know different leagues, but if you look at Lidge's and K Rod's stats minus the saves, he's had a better year.)

why do they make a big deal about the "trade deadline" then?
id take Byrd over wake. i know, blasphemy from a sox fan, but he is so unpredictable. 1 run one night, 6 through 4 innings the next.
byrd will give you 6 strong innings of 4 run ball.
After July 31st, a player has to go through waivers before being able to be traded. Before July 31st you can trade anyone as long as they don't have a no trade clause.
After July 31st and before September 1st, trades can still be made, but players ahve to go through waivers. If a team claims a player, the original team can then pull the player back or make a trade with the team that claims him. The order of waivers is from worst record to best so its much harder to make a deal after the official trade deadline.
So the question is will Byrd or Wake be our 4th starter?
I thought I saw last night, that, if the Sox were the Wild Card, playing the Angels ... they would only need 3 starters in the first series ... as Game 1 is next Wednesday.
If they came in 1st and faced the AL Central winner, they'd need a 4th starter as Game 1 is next Thursday.
If they did need a 4th starter, I'd say they'd go with Byrd.

That is up to the Angels, as the #1 seed (unless TB catches them), they will get to choose whether the series starts on Wed or Thurs.
Congratulations to Tampa. No bones about it you deserve the division.
Also, let's all dance in delight that the Yankees are out of the postseason. This means that I won't have to hear about Jeter"s leadership ability as he hits .156 in a postseason exit lasting 4 games.
The playoffs look fun, 3 strong teams and one dangerous Central team. The AL is the best league, and these teams should be battle tested.
However, should the Sox fall, I will be rooting for the cubbies. Even if Eddie wasn't a fan. I think all Boston fans can relate to them amongst all other teams.

Agreed on all points.
The Rays proved to be quite a team, never folding even when they were hit with injury.
We had our chances to take the division but they held us off.
The AL is strong.
I feel the Sox are the 3rd best team going in, BUT we have experience, and three STUD pitchers to get us through a short series.
Could see any of the 4 making it to the World Series.
Hope the Cubbies play the Sox, that would be awesome.
AND if it's not the Sox. Go Cubs. Knowing how it feels to be without for so long, I would love to see their true fans win a ring.

Congrats to the RAYS they've great this season so far, post season is a whole other story.
My prediction is a Red Sox/Cubs World Series and the Cubs taking the whole thing. Not rooting against the Sox I just feel this is the Cubs year.

Congrats to the Rays but Boston's gonna go all the way, baby!
And the Cubs are gonna choke like they always do. I hope Manny and the L.A. "Red Sox" breaks their hearts!
Well then again Terry Francona hasn't lost a game in the WS so if the Cubbies get there like predicted they probably won't even win a game.
Feel better.

He had a bad inning. It happens.
Since getting off the dl he has a 2.16 era with 27 ks and 4 bbs in 25 innings. I can definitely live with that.

Once I get out of this town

I thought I saw last night, that, if the Sox were the Wild Card, playing the Angels ... they would only need 3 starters in the first series ... as Game 1 is next Wednesday.
If they came in 1st and faced the AL Central winner, they'd need a 4th starter as Game 1 is next Thursday.
If they did need a 4th starter, I'd say they'd go with Byrd.

That is up to the Angels, as the #1 seed (unless TB catches them), they will get to choose whether the series starts on Wed or Thurs.
But watch out in the playoffs. It's a whole different game.
Peace

And the Cubs are gonna choke like they always do. I hope Manny and the L.A. "Red Sox" breaks their hearts!

Well then again Terry Francona hasn't lost a game in the WS so if the Cubbies get there like predicted they probably won't even win a game.
Feel better.
Peace
