In the midst of all the excitement about tonight, I came across an intriguing paragraph in the Boston Globe.
Derek Lowe will be a free agent this winter and Boston is at the top of his list of preferred destinations.
I've always liked DLowe and started thinking about how he could fit in. But look at the situation for next year:
Beckett
Lester
DiceK
Wakefield (you have to renew that contract. for much of the season he was awesome)
and then look at the potential studs all competing for that 5th spot:
Buchholz
Masterson
Bowden
I'm not sure where you'd put Lowe. I think one of the youngsters can fill that 5th spot admirably. I'm not ready to put this season to bed yet, but no matter what happens tonight I'm pumped for next year.

The Red Sox had a ton as well. Schilling was out for the year, We had to trade for Byrd, Colon was signed as insurance and made 7 starts, Buchholz didn't work out this year, Masterson had to make 9 starts as well as a few kids from the farm.
The Red Sox came into the season with 7 starters: Beckett, Dice K, Schilling, Wakefield, Lester, Buchholz, and Colon and even with that they needed to trade for Byrd and call up Masterson. You can never go into a season with just 5 starters. If D Lowe is serious and doesn't look for too much, it's worth the investment, but we have all offseason to discuss that.
I must admit that I had lost faith in the Sox after they went down 1-3. I am glad I was wrong to have doubted them. I think Lester has a good shot tonight.
