I think Theo's hands are tied at this point. They've let this Manny thing go too far. If they trade him, they can't get equal value. If the pick up his option during the off-season, he's gonna be pissed and who knows if he'll actually play or not. If they don't re-sign him they need to find a power bat that hits for average. I wish they could keep him but I'm convinced it's over now between the Sox and Manny...
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

We could have used some of today's runs for Friday night's game!

Well, at least avoided a sweep. We'll take it!

Let's see what happens the next 3 against the "so-called best team"(Angels) in the league.

Matsuzaka taking his Cy Young-contending season up on the mound tomorrow.
    Hope, he gets his 12th!

whoa ... hold on their chief.

    Matsuzaka ... Cy Young-contending?

Ok, so he's got 11 wins (which you need to win a Cy Young, even if Wins are more a function of a teams offense) ... and he's got a low ERA (but, he doesn't have enough innings at current to qualify for the ERA leaders in the AL).

But, let's be real ... the guy has walked 60 guys in 95 innings ... to be honest, he's walking a REALLY thin line, and is probably lucky to have a sub-3.00 ERA ... and it was the 2nd half last year where he collapsed.

Believe me, I'd love him to turn it up to another level ... or at least, improve on his control a bit ... but, I don't think he's in the top 5 for Cy Young at current.

    anyway, good win tonight.

thank you. I was gonna say it, but didn't want to start a fire. And I have him on a fantasy team. He just walks way too many guys. Right now, Cy Young goes to Cliff Lee. Also in serious contention ahead of Matsuzaka:

Roy Halladay--get past the record (12-7) he'd be 15-4 on a team taht could hit
    Mike Mussina
    Joe Saunders
    Mariano Rivera

Gotta go with Cliff Lee right now..got Saunders on my team and he deserves a mntion and hell yea if you throw in Dice-k you GOTTA throw in Moose,...cause raise your hands right now whoever thought Moose was gonna hold us down this yr the way he has...and despite all the criticisms the guys got since coming here.I give him props cause he keeps his mouth sht and goes out and does the best he can
    Respect to that ;)

can a closer win the Cy young?

  • absolutely can, though it rarely happens. I think gagne was the last one to do it. I'll keep my hand down, as I thought Moose would be decent, but nowhere near what he's done. 14-12, something like that is what I expected. Check out a book called Living On The Black if you like Mussina. It's about Mussina and Glavine's 2007 season, as well as their life and career up to the 2007 season. Graet book

thats right! I forgot Gagne won it.so Mo's got a good case then. ANd I'll admit it too I didnt think Moose was gonna get more than 10-11 wins this yr

thanx Im def gonna give that a look man ;)

I think Eckersly won it when he was a closer for the A's once.

K-Rod is probably the best closer up for the Cy Young race this season.

oh yeah, Dice-K for Cy Young is wishful thinking....:D
his pitching have been wild this so far...don't know how he keeps his ERA that low. Should be fun watching him pitch later today.

Who am I missing? I only see Gagne and Eckersley from the list as relievers who won the Cy Young.

Willie Hernandez from the Tigers in 1984
    Rollie Fingers in 1981
    Sparky Lyle in 1977
    Steve Brodosian in 1987
    Mark Davis in 1989
    Bruce Sutter in 1979
    Mike Marshall in 1974

and if you want to go back further to 1950 before there was a Cy Young award the Phillies closer Jim Konstanty won the MVP award with a 16-7 record and 22 saves.

  • Just finishing reading Red Sox Rule.

I picked it up to read about Terry Francona. It's kinda light, but it's still good reading about the 07 World Series. That, and the parts about handling a wacky player like Manny are interesting in light of current developments.
