Oklahoma, USC should emerge from BCS rubble
    By Matt Hayes - SportingNews

SAN ANTONIO -- What a fine, fabulous, fantastic, and -- you better believe it -- fortuitous mess we have here.

Deep breath, everyone. I promise, we can find two teams to play for the national title.

At about 10:40 p.m. CST, the last two dominoes in this unthinkable, unrealistic season fell: Pitt upset No. 2 West Virginia in Morgantown, W.V., and Oklahoma took a 28-14 lead on No. 1 Missouri to put the Big 12 championship game out of reach.

And now here we are. Three months after I-AA Appalachian State won at Michigan to begin this crazy ride, and we're no closer to figuring out who will play in the BCS championship game in New Orleans.

This, boys and girls, is the greatest season in college football history. Playoffs, schmayoffs; this is what it's all about.

Tomorrow, in offices and basements and airports all over the country, men and women will sit down at their computers and decide who will play for it all. What does the guy in Boise think, or the gal in New York? Or the former coach retiring in sunny South Florida?

What to do, what to do, what to do.

After witnessing a once-in-a-lifetime season; after 20 top 10 teams lost to unranked teams; after 13 top five teams lost; after -- I can't believe I'm writing this -- both Missouri and West Virginia lost with the finish line one measly game away, it's time to swallow hard and vote for the two best teams in the country.

Not the teams with the best losses. Not the teams who played best on the last weekend of the season. Not the teams who were slotted in spots that would allow them to naturally move up.

The two best teams. Under those parameters, I'll take USC and Oklahoma. No two teams are playing better, no two teams deserve it more.

Go ahead, take your shots at me because USC lost to Stanford (which lost eight games), and because OU blew a 17-point lead to Colorado (which lost six games). Talk all you want, I've got an answer:

    • Georgia? Lost at home to six-loss South Carolina, blown out in its only significant true road game of the season at Tennessee.

    • Ohio State? Played one good team, lost the game. At home.

    • LSU? Lost to two teams who combined to lose nine games. Les, babe, you lost to Kentucky and Arkansas. I say, Kentucky and Arkansas!

    • Virginia Tech? Um, any team that loses by 41 doesn't play for it all.

    • West Virginia and Missouri? Pfffft.

At this point, all we can do is use the two eyes the good Lord gave us and make a well-educated stab. That means a lot of ifs.

If the USC coaching staff had not suffered a brain freeze in the Stanford game and had played backup quarterback Mark Sanchez in the second half, the Trojans would not have committed four turnovers and given the game away. Then, the loss to Oregon isn't as damaging.

If Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford doesn't sustain a concussion on the first drive of a seven-point loss at Texas Tech, the Sooners are the hottest team in the country. That was the real OU dismantling the No. 1 team in the nation 38-17 in the Big 12 title game.

Deep into the fourth quarter, Missouri's vaunted offense -- which scored at least 31 points in each of the previous 12 games -- had 15 plays in the red zone. And got 15 yards.

No other team among the championship game contenders beat a No. 1. In fact, the best win by any of the other contenders was USC's win over then-No. 7 Arizona State. LSU and Georgia both beat then-No. 9 Florida.

What does it all mean? A lot of bellyaching for the foreseeable future.

But what a wonderful ride it has been.

i like how he says it's not about who has the best losses and then goes on to dismiss every other team becos of their losses.

this is where an 8-team playoff would be beautiful. take all the big conference champs and an at-large bid or two. virginia tech, lsu, oklahoma, osu, wvu, usc... then georgia and hawaii i say. how cool would that be?

    osu-hawaii
    lsu-wvu
    georgia-virginia tech
    oklahoma-usc

The BCS is a joke. Its a shame that college football dosen't have a playoff. i'm glad i don't waste my time with "bowl" games.

Playoffs are the best . The atmosphere rocks. It's all or nothing. Bowl games, except the Championship game , are all about sponsorships and $ . I mean , does anyone really care about the Thrifty Car Rental Bowl ? Maybe the schools involved . On the other hand , playoffs have national title ramifications, due to possible upsets, hanging on each game.

I'm a University of Delaware grad (' 81) and have enjoyed watching Delaware involved in playoffs on a number of occasions since 1978. I'm ecstatic that Delaware is in again this year and , after yesterdays win, have plans to go to Southern Illinois for next weeks semi-final.

    PLAYOFFS FOREVER!! BCS NEVER.

I agree. Mizzou should have been in over Kansas. They also should have put Georgia in the rose bowl. That would have been a great matchup.

Yep. USC will destroy Illinois, and Georgia will destroy Hawai, and VT will destroy Kansas. These are some shitty matchups.

yeah, seems to me only oklahoma-wvu might be a contest. lsu-osu is a crapshoot. it depends on whether or not ohio state shows up to play this time.
  • I don't see GA destroying Hawai'i at all. The Hawai'i offense is crazy. True, it's defense that wins championships, but Hawai'i can score at will. I will enjoy watching that game more than any this bowl season.

They arent scoring at will against Georgia. Georgia will easily be the fastest defense they have played all year.

hawai'i is good...georgia was supposed to be SO FAST 2 years ago too...does anyone remember what happened 2 years ago? i think this will be a good game...

let's keep the WVU-Pitt references out of this, for now...i don't want to talk about it...i hope pat's thumb is okay in january...i hope patrick's leg is back in line in january...and i hope slaton gets back in gear...devine on punts and kick-offs would be smart...and coach rodriguez should think about CALLING A FUCKING FOOTBALL GAME INSTEAD OF A FUCKING VICTORIA'S SECRET SLEEPOVER!

LSU / OSU will be more interesting than UF / OSU was last year...I remember the LSU / VT game...Kansas is no pushover...USC / Illinois is a SHITTY matchup...

Well the Rose Bowl committee wants to keep the Big 10 Pac 10 matchup whenever possible. It wasn't that surprising that the Rose Bowl passed on Georgia for Illinois.

Not sure what happened 2 years ago with Georgia, unless you are talking about getting beat by WV. But Hawaii isnt in WVs league, so that isnt a valid comparison.

Secondly, Hawaii is so good they were able to beat LA Tech 45-44. The same LA Tech team that was beaten 24-0 by Ole Miss (who was winless in the SEC) and the same LA Tech team that was beaten 58-10 by LSU. And they also struggled to beat Fresno state and San Jose state who were both blown out by pac 10 teams. I cant see this game being within 3 TDs.

they will. i dont think they have to worry about the spread offense this time.

that's true and that's the biggest boost as far as im concerned. lsu can spread the field and they have the speed to do it, but they dont really run a typical spread offense like osu saw with florida last year or illinois this year. i also think osu is faster than people give them credit for.

i was more referring to mental preparation though. last time, osu just looked flat. they looked unprepared and stunned, like the didnt expect to have to run and florida would just roll over for them. basically, they bought into their own hype and looked complacent. this season, they're going to be underdogs and basically playing on the road against a home team. they better be hungry.
  • Am I the only one who finds the USC-Illinois matchup in the Rose Bowl interesting? USC is a perennial powerhouse going up against a strong up-and-coming Illini team. I doubt they win, but I think it will be a great topper to gauge how far Illinois has come this year after beating a #1 team (Ohio State) and only losing by 6 pts to another #1 team (Mizzou).

Hawaii-Georgia is mega gay. I'm sure that I'm one of the millions who would have preferred to see Hawaii against Mizzou. And yeah, Kansas doesn't deserve a BCS bowl.

i'll undoubtedly watch the rose bowl, but i think usc is going to dominate. they annihilated a pretty good michigan team this year, and while illinois is good, they're not there yet. next year is their season. the illinois-osu game is going to be huge next year. both teams have a ton of returning talent.
