Anderson Silva Vs. Patrick Côté - MW Championship

oh man... I don't know anything about Cote. is he going to put up a fight or is Silva going to dominate like he has been lately?

well, most people are picking anderson to win this one pretty easily. his skill level is certainly heads and shoulders above patrick's. what côté has going for him is a solid chin and a powerful right hand with one punch knockout power. he used to be a brawler when he started his career and won his fights simply by overwhelming his opponents and knocking them out. he dropped from 205 to 185, started to get in better shape and refine his techniques a bit, working with guys like georges st-pierre, jonathan goulet, david loiseau, etc. after a couple of losses in the ufc, he made it to the finals of the ultimate fighter 4, losing in the early part of round one to travis lutter by armbar. his ground game needed work and he started training with olympic wrestlers, and btt canada trainer fabio hollanda. he's undefeated since losing to travis and has really made remarkable progress with his takedown defense. his muay thai is a lot sharper too, since starting to train in boston with mark dellagrotte at sityodtong. still, at this point, his muay thai can't even compare to anderson's.

he's been in a couple of boring fights in the ufc where he played things very safe to get the wins. can't blame him, i guess, when one was to keep his contract in the ufc and the other was for the title shot after yushin okami got hurt.

i'll be cheering for patrick in this one, but by all logic anderson should win. i can't recall ever seeing côté hurt by a punch in a fight, and he's been in some brawls...but he's never been in one with anderson silva. :D he fights a much more open style when he knows or is fairly confident his opponent isn't looking for the takedown, so i look for him to be cautious about the strikes, but a little more free with his own. you never know, patrick could land a big punch, but anderson has so many more weapons. it's mma, anything can happen!

    just my opinion...;)

oh, and gina is rumoured to be fighting cristiane santos sometime early 2009. :)

thanks mookie! so he's working with georges st. pierre eh... I watched that guy dominate frank trigg last night on tv. pretty sure it was a replay, but i had never seen st. pierre fight before and was really impressed. hopefully st. pierre taught cote some good techniques because he's gonna need them against silva. while i agree that anything can happen.. i just can't fathom anyone beating silva right now.

and gina needs to fight more often. or atleast have more weigh ins where she gets naked!:D

  • joe rogan posted this video on the mma underground forum on sunday. it's from backstage at his comedy show the night before where they're getting set to watch kimbo slice vs. seth petruzelli. joe, stoned and sporting his evan tanner tribute beard (which i hope he keeps for the show on the 18th in england! :D), predicts the fight correctly. pretty funny reaction...thought i would post it for a laugh...

"if i'm wrong, you'll never see this!" :D

    that was awsome lol...
it's crazy that a jab was all it took to put kimbo out, especially from a guy that weighs more than 30lbs less than him, and the guy coming in on extremely short notice.
The card itself was actually pretty good, i enjoyed all the fights except the main event, which actually turned out better than i'd though it'd be when ken was supposed to fight... thank god that didn't happen :)

  • after a good night of fights tonight, elitexc has their card for the november 8th on showtime already shaping up to be pretty solid too...

    EliteXC, November 8, 2008 - Reno Events Center,Reno, Nevada - Showtime

Robbie Lawler Vs. Joey Villasenor II - EliteXC MW Championship
Nick Diaz Vs. Eddie Alvarez - Vacant EliteXC LW Championship
    Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante Vs. TBA
    Scott Smith Vs. Hector Lombard
    Kaitlin Young Vs. Sarah Kaufman
    Brett Rogers Vs. TBA

looks like another good card... i'll be cheering for nick but i think eddie will be taking the belt.
i wonder if they'll do the Rogers/Kimbo fight now???

i've never seen the trigg/gsp fight, when was that?
gsp is considered (alongside penn, silva, fedor) the Pound For Pound best fighter in the world, so you can't really compare cote to him. I'm sure gsp has helped cote in his training for this fight, but i do not see anyone except maybe 5 guys in the world (fedor, machida and possibly big nog, lesnar, gsp) coming close to beating anderson at this time.

hey leafs! happy to hear you enjoyed the show from the weekend. i echo your sentiments. :)

have to agree that eddie is too much to deal with right now. nick's takedown game isn't suited for a guy like eddie, and if it comes down to the hands, nick has that awkward style, but eddie has speed, power, and combinations. that is a tough fight for nick!

i'm not sure how much he's working with georges. the quebec guys move around and then train together when they are home at the same time, from what i gather. probably working more technique in boston than anywhere.

that's a great first match to see georges! :) like velcro georges was. i think that's probably one of my favourite completely one-sided fights. beautiful!
  • leafs, i did a search of the usual spots for trigg vs. gsp but they all seem to have been taken down. it's still in his career pack, though, from ufc 54. definitely worth checking out! one of georges' best performances. frank called him a b-level fighter prior to the match...:D

Report: Andrei Arlovski vs. Fedor Emelianenko official for Affliction
    by MMAjunkie.com Staff
    Oct 10, 2008

Andrei Arlovski will return to Affliction to battle current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko at the organization's second event, "Day of Reckoning," according to Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio.

MMARated.com was the first to report the news.

According to the report, the official announcement -- as well as exact details of the date, location and main card fights -- will be released sometime next week.

"Day of Reckoning" was originally scheduled to be held Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. That event was rescheduled in light of a new partnership with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions -- although reports of slow ticket sales may also have factored into the decision.

Despite Golden Boy's new involvement with "Day of Reckoning," Atencio also confirmed that the event would feature MMA bouts only -- conflicting with Affliction's previous announcement that the event would involve both boxing and MMA.

"We sat down with them and couldn't come up with a main event boxing match that everyone wanted," Atenco told MMARated.com.

Previous reports have pointed to a Jan. 24 2009 date in Anaheim, Calif., as Affliction's likely target for a new date.

Arlovski was last seen successfully defeating IFL champion Roy Nelson at "EliteXC: Heat" on week ago. The bout was a co-promoted affair between Affliction and EliteXC.

Emelianenko last fought in July, making quick work of former UFC champion Tim Sylvia at Affliction's debut event, "Banned."

Immediate attempts to reach Atencio by MMAjunkie.com were unsuccessful.

    GSP in black belt club
“It’s the high point in my career”
    12.10.2008

It wasn’t just any Saturday at the Tristar martial arts academy, in Montreal, Canada.

The Jiu-Jitsu class, with around 50 participants, was more crowded than usual. But the UFC welterweight champion, Georges St-Pierre, suspected nothing.

And he was moved when medical researcher and holder of several Jiu-Jitsu titles Bruno Fernandes promoted him to the status of black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.

“This was the high point in my career,” an emotional St-Pierre confessed, when laying out the three happiest moments of his life:

“When I received my black belt in karate, when I conquered the UFC belt, and today.”

The promotion echoed in New York and, Renzo Gracie, who has taught Jiu-Jitsu to the Canadian star in the past before his collision course with Renzo student Matt Serra, approved:

“He more than deserves it. This was excellent new for the fight world,” said the teacher.

To Gracie Barrra black belt Fernandes, who has been living in Canada for the last few years, where he earned his PhD and researches cancer treatments, and thus has been teaching the martial arts phenomenon for years, it was a great honor to fasten the black belt and say:

    “Welcome to the club!”

  • it also appears that there has been some changes to the ufc 90 cards

Leites vs. McFedries at UFC 90; Maynard vs. Clementi headed to main card
by Dann Stupp on Oct 13, 2008 at 2:26 pm ET

With Goran Reljic (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) forced out of UFC 90 with a back injury, his original opponent, Thales Leites (13-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC), is now expected to fight UFC veteran Drew McFedries (7-4 MMA, 3-3 UFC).

A source close to McFedries alerted MMAjunkie.com (http://www.mmajunkie.com) of the likely substitution today.

With the change, a fight between lightweight contenders Rich Clementi (32-12-1 MMA, 5-3 UFC) and Gray Maynard (5-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is now expected to be promoted from UFC 90's un-televised preliminary card to the pay per view broadcast's televised main card.

UFC 90, which features a main event of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva vs. Patrick Cote, takes place Oct. 25 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., near Chicago.

Reljic first signed a UFC 90 bout agreement to meet Leites in August. However, the Croatian fighter has since suffered a back injury and is seeking treatment. In his place will likely step McFedries, a hard-hitting Miletich fighter who debuted in November 2006.

Since that time, McFedries has followed a knockout win with a loss three times over his six UFC fights. He most recently suffered a first-round submission loss to Mike Massenzio at UFC Fight Night 15.

Leites, meanwhile, will go for his fifth straight victory in the UFC since suffering a unanimous-decision loss to Martin Kampmann in his 2006 octagon debut. The Brazilian most recently scored a split-decision victory over Nate Marquardt at UFC 85, though the win was aided by Marquardt's two costly point deductions.

  • I don't think this was posted yet, Sanchez out of UFC 90, Koscheck to take his place.
I really wanted to see Sanchez v Alves, it would have been a good fight, but I think Alves is going to dominate Kos, just like he did with Hughes.

    Oct-13-2008
Sanchez Out; Koscheck Steps in to Face Alves at UFC 90 By Thomas Gerbasi

Welterweight contender Diego Sanchez has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 90 bout against Thiago Alves due to torn rib cartilage, but the October 25th co-feature bout is not lost, as standout 170-pounder Josh Koscheck has stepped up to face Brazil’s “Pitbull” in an equally intriguing welterweight matchup.

“There is nothing worse than having a great fight and then having one of the fighters drop out at the last second,” said UFC President Dana White. “But the one thing the UFC has proven time and time again is our ability to replace fights with ones as good as or better than the original fight, and we’ve done it again with the highly-ranked Josh Koscheck stepping up to replace Diego Sanchez against welterweight wrecking machine Thiago Alves. Hats off to Josh and Thiago, as not many fighters would agree to a matchup this tough on such short notice.”

A native of Fortaleza, Brazil, who now makes his home in Coconut Creek, Florida, the 25-year old Alves (21-4) is currently riding a six fight winning streak that includes knockout victories over Matt Hughes and Karo Parisyan. But he will be put to the test by Koscheck next week.

“Josh Koscheck is a great fighter and I think he’s an even better matchup for me,” said Alves. “I’m looking forward to fighting him, and I’m gonna knock him out.”

Fresno, California’s Koscheck (13-2), a 2001 NCAA Division I wrestling champion, is on a bit of a winning streak himself, having stopped Dustin Hazelett and decisioned Chris Lytle already in 2008. A win over Alves will put the 30-year old even closer to a shot at the welterweight crown, but first things first, and his focus is squarely on his October 25th foe.

“I think he’s a tough opponent,” said Koscheck. “He’s on a tear right now in the UFC and for me to step up and fight him, I think it’s gonna be an exciting fight. I’ve been in training since Chris Lytle, I haven’t taken any time off, and he’s a tough guy, so I’ve got to come in and fight him at my ‘A’ game.”

Tickets for UFC 90, which is headlined by the UFC middleweight title bout between Anderson Silva and Patrick Cote, are on sale now.

So after watching GSP kick Trigg's ass, I tried to catch a couple more fights by St. Pierre and I saw him fight Jon Fitch. Even though Fitch lost, I was impressed by his chin and how he stood up to GSP's brutal beatdown in the first round.

I also caught an Arlovski fight.. dude's definitely ripped, but can he put up a fight against Fedor?

fitch showed huge heart in that fight. seldom is a one sided fight entertaining...but those are two you have mentioned that are. the trigg fight because it was a "clinic" as rogan said :D , and the second because georges gave fitch about as much as you can throw at someone and he kept coming back. amazing.

andrei should be fedor's toughest fight in some time. i thought tim sylvia would pose some problems for fedor if he could use his reach effectively, but that went out the window with the first couple of punches thrown by fedor! people question arlovski's chin, but he's only been knocked out by pedro rizzo and tko'd by tim sylvia and ricco rodriguez. sylvia is the only guy to knock him down in recent years that i can recall, and that was a partial throat shot that he walked into. sylvia, on the other hand was knocked down by the first, or one of the first, shots from arlovski twice, couture once, and fedor. yet, for some reason, people don't talk about his chin. i guess it's because he's never been truly knocked out completely.

anyway, i think andrei has a good chin. fedor does as well. both guys come from sambo and are extremely agile and quick HW's. it will be tough for fedor to get arlovski to the ground, as he has excellent takedown defense. he also has half decent trip takedowns he uses himself. if fedor can get him down, andrei is probably going to be on the bad end of some heavy ground and pound. i don't think fedor will submit him. andrei has great defensive skills in jiu-jitsu.

so i guess it will probably come down to the striking and fedor has those huge looping punches he throws like lightning, while andrei has very technical kickboxing, although he will have to clean up a few mistakes from his last couple of fights. he was leaving his hands low when bringing them back from his punches and that's not something he can do against fedor, so he'll have to make that adjustment. both guys have obviously demonstrated power. it should be a hell of a fight. i can't wait! sorry for the long winded reply, i just realized how much i wrote there. just my opinion, but i think andrei will win this one. :)

I like Cote too but the Spider is on a fucking mission. The man is undefeated in the UFC and I really can't see anyone ending that steak anytime soon. I'm just thrilled as shit with all the top notch fights coming up in the next several months. I'm hoping that Elite XC can get a Carano/Santos fight in by early 2009 to add to all the good UFC bouts.

no need to wish anderson good luck at this stage, eh? :D it's true, he is so in focus right now, with accuracy and power combined like no other. his reading of opponents almost seems telepathic at times. it's like he takes a minute to get in their mind and fish out their weakness, then attacks it. at the very least this will be a great opportunity for patrick to gain some experience against the very top guy. he'll know what it's like to see that level and it should make him a better fighter. he's still a pretty young guy.

i'm with you in the thrilled department! :D some good stuff coming up to round out the year and then it looks like some good things for early 2009. the carano vs. santos match is rumoured for then, but we'll have to wait and see what happens. i think they were considering a possible ppv card for the spring. i'm hoping it's shown on cbs so as many people can get a chance to see it as possible. it should be outstanding!
  • it sounds promising for carano vs. santos! possibly to happen in february for the elitexc women's championship. super fight! :)

GINA CARANO EXCITED FOR CYBORG AND TITLE
    Thursday, October 16, 2008
    by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

Keeping her undefeated record intact with her last fight, Gina Carano is doing some promotion for her appearance in the new "Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3" game, but then her focus will shift to a proposed match-up against Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos early next year.

Carano is currently doing a media tour for the video game, but she spoke to MMAWeekly Radio on Wednesday about her next fight, which is likely to be against Cyborg, possibly in February.

"That's what I'm hearing too, and I'm real excited about it," Carano said about the match-up. "Maybe it will be for a title, maybe it will be a main event, I don't know. I'm just really excited about this fight because everybody else is excited about it and I just think it's an awesome match-up. I can't wait to train for it and I'd like to see where I'm at."

On the same night that Carano defeated Kelly Kobold, her next opponent, Cyborg, was also on the card. She was able to watch the fight and it actually made her feel more at home for the show.

"When I was back in the back I was watching her fight and you know it was just really nice to have another female fight on the card. I think that made me more comfortable," Carano commented. "I used to fight all the time with females on my cards and for a while I've just been the only one. So having another female fight on the card just made me feel more comfortable. I got to see her fight and I definitely think she's one of the top female fighters in the world. I'm going to try to put myself right in there with her."

As previously mentioned, the battle between Carano and Cyborg will most likely crown the first ever EliteXC women's champion, and multiple EliteXC officials have hinted at the same scenario when the two women finally meet.

Following a successful career in Muay Thai and now MMA, Carano is excited at the prospect of adding a women's title to her resume.

"That just makes me smile, I'm so excited about that," she stated about the title shot. "We've come so far and we've done so much in this sport. I've been through so much and just to kind of get there and to be fighting for the first belt and to have that be another first, I think that, there's not a feeling that compares to that."

The one thing that hasn't been decided is what weight class the fight between Carano and Cyborg will be at, considering Cyborg last fought at 148 pounds and Carano has seemingly struggled making the 140-pound weight limit.

But Carano has now come forward to say that the 140-pound weight class was a happy medium to find the best opponents, but she may have to move up a division to stay healthy before her fights.

"The reason why I started going down to 140 in the first place is because I thought that was a good weight people could come up from 135 or they could come down from 155/150," said Carano. "It's such a good weight class to have people all meet at, and that's where I saw all the competition too, so I've been doing this to get down to fight at a popular weight class.

"I'll see a couple months out when they offer me the fight for Cyborg and I'll see where I'm at and I'll see what weight I really want to go down to, 145 or 140, I'm not sure. Because she fought at 148 in this last fight, so we'll see."

Carano keeps a good perspective though, understanding that she needs to make weight and if that can't be at 140 pounds, then she will move on to a different weight.

"If I don't belong down at 140, I don't want to keep fighting there, but I do want to see my natural walking around weight as healthy, working out with a nutritionist," stated Carano. "I want to see where I'm comfortable at and by the time they offer me the fight two months out, then I'll be able to be like, if I'm at 155 I'll be like yeah I'll go down to 140."

For the time being, Carano will enjoy some time off promoting her new video game and working on other projects before preparing for the showdown with Cyborg in 2009.
