ANDREI ARLOVSKI VS ROY NELSON AT ELITE XC ON CBS
    Wednesday, September 24, 2008
    by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

Following the disappointment of many of the fighters on the now rescheduled Oct. 11 Affliction show, two top heavyweights have landed on the Oct. 4 CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights show as former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski takes on the only ever International Fight League heavyweight champion in Roy Nelson.

The news was confirmed by EliteXC in a joint venture by the promotion, CBS and Donald Trump’s Affliction Entertainment.

"This is yet another testament to EliteXC’s willingness to work with other MMA promotions to bring the best possible fights to the broadest possible audience," said Jeremy Lappen, head of the Live Fight Division of EliteXC. "Special thanks to the hard working-team at Affliction and of course our partners at CBS and Showtime."

Arlovski is coming off of an impressive win over Ben Rothwell at the debut Affliction show in which he handed the fighter his first loss in 13 fights. The Belarus native was originally supposed to face Josh Barnett in the main event for the Affliction show that was postponed.

Roy Nelson, who was tapped originally to face Paul Buentello, steps up to the main card for the CBS-EliteXC show with the biggest test of his career taking on the former UFC champion.

Nelson has long been considered one of the top heavyweights in the world and a win over Arlovski would certainly be a huge boost for his career.

The fight between Arlovski and Nelson rounds out the five-fight event set for the CBS broadcast on Oct. 4.

The televised fight card for CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights is:

    -Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock
-Jake Shields vs. Paul Daley (for EliteXC welterweight title)
-Andrei Arlovski vs. Roy "Big Country" Nelson
    -Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold
-Murilo "Ninja" Rua vs. Benji Radach

  • GSP vs. matt serra II from montreal coming up on ufc releashed. good memories of good times. :)
  • i did indeed flake out, leafs. :D saw the first half of the football game, woke up to see the end of it, then went back to sleep and woke up in time to catch sergei's start / finish of his fight. i was hoping to avoid missing the first two MW matches for the tourney final, but it's hard to do when you come into the show halfway through! haha

...and leading up to funaki vs. minowa, they are playing neil young in saitama super arena!...for some reason...:D

i watched the fights from dream and thought it was a decent card. I can't remember the guy's name (he was in the finals), but he had a crazy arm triangle bar. That and the final KO to win the finals were the highlights for me. Thought it was pretty shitty how the cro cop fight finished but i'm not surprised he couldn't go on. Those were 2 pretty solid shots he took

edit: That's awsome about Arlovski being added to Elite show :)

  • yeah, i was disappointed with how the DREAM show played out. it looked much better on paper, even though it was obvious a few of these were total mismatches.

i agree, the MW tourney was the highlight for me. all 5 minutes of it! haha i think that's how long they said the three matches took in total time. i'm not a manhoef fan and mousasi is awesome, so i was really excited to see manhoef get finished that way. the arm bar from jacare on zelg that you mentioned was amazing! the triangle with the legs and then the crank on the arm...beautiful. zelg was an awesome sport about it too. i've been nothing but impressd with his improvements and his overall attitude. great kid with a wealth of potential.

...and i don't know what it is about crocop's jewels, but knees always seem to find their way to them. i think kongo hit him with a good solid three or four shots, and overeem had two there that landed square. sad way to end what could have been a very good fight, indeed.

+1 on andrei! :) i'm not a rothwell fan or a nelson fan, so if he can beat them both impressively, and back-to-back, that would be awesome! :)
  • ufc.com has posted another short tribute video for evan tanner. this time, eric schafer (thanks again to schafer for dedicating his win over houston alexander to evan :)...makes me wish i'd taken the opportunity to get a picture with him when we said hello on the street in montreal...), ed herman, and alan belcher give their thoughts about him and his passing.

  • some interested news from the WEC:
World Extreme Cagefighting champions Steve Cantwell and Paulo Filho will find themselves in the deeper waters of the UFC. Both titleholders will likely be relegated to the UFC’s light heavyweight and middleweight divisions with the WEC’s announcement Friday to dissolve the weight classes in 2009.

The WEC will continue to host bouts in the bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions. The WEC, which is owned by Zuffa LLC, parent company to the UFC, enjoys a healthy broadcast contract with the Versus channel, a sports-centric cable network.

Talks of dropping the two divisions to focus on the lighter weight classes have been ongoing.

"We're going to make the WEC the smaller weights and the UFC will be the heavier weights,” UFC President Dana White told The Canadian Press last April. “We'll probably take some of the guys in the higher weights, the champions over there and bring them into the UFC. We're still trying to figure that out."

Zuffa doesn't seem to be resting on its laurels with the decision. MMAWeekly.com reported Friday that Cantwell and Stann will have their rubber match at UFC "Fight for the Troops" Dec. 10 at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The live Spike TV event will donate proceeds to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a not-for-profit organization that provides financial support to the families of deceased and severely wounded military veterans.

A resident of Las Vegas, Cantwell (6-1) wrested the light heavyweight accolade away from former champion and U.S. Marine Corps officer Brian Stann (6-1) by second-round TKO in a heated rematch last August. Their first contest ended in only 41 seconds in Stann's favor.

Filho (16-0), a former Pride Fighting Championships star, has defended his middleweight title once. In December 2007, he earned a controversial second-round verbal submission over Team Quest’s Chael Sonnen. The pair is set to rematch at WEC 36 on Nov. 5 in Hollywood, Fla.

“I’m furious to hear the news. I’m returning to BodogFight immediately,” Sonnen joked Friday.

WEC officials could not be initially reached for comment.

  • that's very good news! so many times i would look on a wec undercard and think...man, i wish they would show that fight. now they'll have those lighter weight class bouts showcased more often. more opportunities for the smaller guys to get tv time, as well as new guys to make their debuts on the undercards. i like it! :)

there were really only a couple of guys that fought regularly in the heavier weight classes and it seemed like they were just fighting each other over and over. good move, but as you said leafs, it's too bad about paulo and anderson being friends. that's a fight a lot of people want to see. we'll have to wait for a falling out, maybe? :D

  • Trying to Help a Friend with Medical Bills - Special Benefit T-Shirt

inspired by jamie uk's random acts of kindness thread, and to honour the spirit of my late friend Evan and the many good things he did for others, i'm posting this here in an attempt to help out a friend who is trying to deal with not only recovering from injuries, but also trying to pay his medical bills.

some of you may or may not be familiar with the reality show, The Ultimate Fighter. i have a friend named Dan Christison who appeared on the second season of the show and his wife, Kyria, became close friends with the moderator who oversaw The Ultimate Fighter forum while keeping up with Dan's appearance on the show.

the moderator's name is Mike Garrow. he is a truck driver and a mixed martial arts fan. he is also a soldier who has served the US in Iraq. some time ago, he was shot by a friend while trying to help get that friend out of a dark place in his life.

Mike was hospitalized with his injuries, and against doctor's advice, left the hospital early to try to get back to work driving his truck so that he wouldn't lose money from income and also to try to minimize his hospital bills. unfortunately, this meant that he had to go back to work in a great deal of pain and he and his family still have medical bills hanging over their heads.

the good people at Kitsura Clothing Ltd. have designed a t-shirt to benefit Mike Garrow, known as G-Row online, with the payment of his medical bills. it is a great shirt, and only 25$. sales of the shirt benefit Mike and his family directly to help pay their way out of the medical bills.

whether you are a mixed martial arts fan, someone who appreciates a nice t-shirt, or someone wanting to help out someone in need, please take a moment to have a look. thanks, i'd really appreciate it. i'd like to do as much as i can to help, even if it means just selling one shirt in addition to what i buy...

    here is the t-shirt:

King of Beasts - Team G-row
    $25.00

    Designed by Zack Adams

Limited Edition. Proceeds benefiting injured friend Mike Garrow. Black Ultra Cotton tee with white and grey design front and white Kitsura logo back at nape of neck. 100% cotton preshrunk jersey. 10.1 ounce.

  • here is Dan's post asking for people to take a look at the shirt to benefit Mike and his family...i think we can all relate to the friendships grown out of the internet community and forums. :)

"A few years ago my wife became part of an online community called The Ultimate Fighter Forum while I was away filming TUF. She became good friends with several people through the Internet that support this sport. The thing that makes this group of people a little different than other people who have "friendships" online is that these people have real friendships off the Internet as well. I believe every time we have traveled in the last three years we have met someone for lunch, dinner or just to hang out and chat for a while. Many of them have been cool enough to spend their hard earned money to travel to my fights and even take their vacations in Santa Claus, Indiana where my wife and I live. At first I was hesitant about meeting people online and definitely allowing my wife to meet strangers because we've all read the horror stories but there has not been one person that we have met over the years that hasn't been a good person with a great heart. As a matter of fact, one of the guys from this forum moved here to train full time and made the decision even before he had the chance to meet either one of us.

As in any friendships there are times when someone may need help and this band of friends will always reach out and help the other. Several months ago one of the friends, a guy called G-row online, was shot. He was not shot by a random person but by one of his lifetime friends for nothing more than the fact that the friend is walking on a dark path and G-row being the person he is was reaching out and trying to help this man. G-row is one of our soldiers, he served time in Iraq and is one of those cool guys that you just like having around. The day he was shot was crazy. It was very early in the morning and our cell phones were going wild. It was terrifying to not know what happened to our friend but amazing in the fact that so many people from all over the US were concerned and contacting each other in support. G-row's hospital bills are mounting up over the incident. One of the people in this band of friends is starting a clothing company and he decided to lend a hand. He had a design contest for a t-shirt, is selling them on his website and the proceeds will go to help G-row pay for his hospital bills.

I know that there are many ways to help people and many people who need help. It seems that people are always asking for your money. The cool thing in this is that you aren't just giving your money away to an organization that you really don't know where it's going. You are getting a kick ass shirt for it. G-row supports this sport and the fighters and the organizations involved in it. He has been a mod on the TUF forum for years. If you get a chance, check out the Team G-row shirt on the Kitsura website http://www.kitsura.com It's the first shirt in the Men's section. Brewster is the guy who owns the clothing company. He and his crew have designed some really cool shirts. I wore his clothes at my last fight and the shorts were great to fight in."

    Thanks for your time guys.
    Dan Christison

Rich Franklin could meet Dan Henderson Jan. 17 at UFC 93
    by Dann Stupp
    Sep 30, 2008

Former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin (24-3 MMA, 11-2 UFC) could meet former PRIDE title-holder Dan Henderson (23-7 MMA, 3-2 UFC) at a UFC event tentatively scheduled for Jan. 17 at The 02 in Dublin, Ireland.

Sources close to both fighters told MMAjunkie.com that the Franklin-Henderson fight has been discussed as a possibility for the fight card, though bout agreements have not been distributed.

The tentatively scheduled event was first reported by Yahoo! Sport UK & Ireland earlier today.

That report stated that Franklin could meet Chuck Liddell or Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in the event's headline bout. But sources close to the fighters said that a Franklin-Henderson fight may be the most likely option.

However, sources said it's not known if the fight would take place at 205 or 185 pounds (nor is it known if the fight would even be a main event). Although Henderson has bounced between the two weight classes, Franklin only recently moved up to 205 pounds after more than three years competing as a middleweight. Earlier this month at UFC 88, he defeated Matt Hamill via third-round TKO (due to a body kick) in his return to light heavyweight.

Meanwhile, after suffering championship losses to then-UFC light heavyweight champ Quinton Jackson at UFC 75 and middleweight title-holder Anderson Silva at UFC 82, Henderson picked up his first UFC victory in more than 10 years with a unanimous-decision victory over Rousimar Palhares at UFC 88.

Recently, Henderson has been rumored as a possible coach for the ninth season of "The Ultimate Fighter." The upcoming installment of the UFC's reality series will feature a U.S. vs. U.K. theme and begin filming in January. Season-three winner Michael Bisping is the logical choice to head the U.K. team. However, if he were to fight in January at UFC 93, Henderson would seem an unlikely candidate to head the U.S. squad.

In any manner, UFC 93 could also feature the long-awaited grudge match between former UFC welterweight champions Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, according to the Yahoo! report. The "TUF 6" coaches were originally scheduled to meet in December 2007, but Serra was forced out of the bout with a back injury. (Hughes has since been sidelined by a knee injury suffered in a loss to Thiago Alves earlier this year.)

Serra recently told MMAjunkie.com he expects the fight to happen in early 2009 and that he "plans on retiring" Hughes.

To date the UFC has never hosted an event in the Republic of Ireland. The recently revamped O2 (formerly "The Point") can hold nearly 13,000 spectators.

    by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has officially announced a return to Ireland on Jan 17, but this time they will be traveling to Dublin for the first time. Former middleweight champion, Rich “Ace” Franklin stays put at 205lbs to face Dan Henderson in a tough light heavyweight showdown as the main event.

Also on the card will be former top light heavyweight stand-out, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua moving up to heavyweight for the night to get a rematch with Mark “The Hammer” Coleman, who defeated Rua while the two were in Pride a few years ago.

The fight between Franklin and Henderson is the culmination of a tremendous body of work for both competitors as they finally get the chance to square off in the Octagon.

“Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson is a battle between two great former champions who are both looking to get another chance to wear a world title around their waist,” said Dana White in a press release on Wednesday. “Franklin is the former UFC Middleweight champion, and he’s a dangerous striker with solid submission skills – he also showed great takedown defense in his September destruction of powerful wrestler Matt Hamill.”

“Dan Henderson is the former Pride welterweight and middleweight champion. He’s a world class wrestler, known for his great chin and his one punch knockout power. He defeated formidable Brazilian submission specialist Rousimar Palhares in September. These are two fan favorites with a lot of pride on the line as they want to show that they are still among the very best fighters in the world.”

Because the bout between Franklin and Henderson takes place at 205lbs, this could officially eliminate Henderson from the recent rumors that he may coach alongside Michael Bisping, who seems like a logical choice for the United Kingdom squad, in the latest installment of the “Ultimate Fighter” reality series.

The UFC has made no official announcement regarding any coaching possibilities for the show so anything could still happen.

The Jan 17 event will re-introduce fans to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, who had one of the most hyped arrivals ever in the UFC, but did not live up to expectations when he lost to now light heavyweight champion, Forrest Griffin, in Sept 2007.

Rua has since disappeared off the radar due to several knee surgeries that have kept the former Pride champion sidelined for more than a year.

The rematch between Shogun and Coleman should be interesting to say the least as the two fighters have a history that at one time included a feud between to the camps of the two former champions. Coleman defeated Shogun while in Pride after a takedown from the former Ohio State wrestler caused an awkward landing for Rua and his arm broke thus stopping the fight.

Soon after it was almost bedlam as members of Rua’s former team, Chute Boxe, rushed the ring as Coleman celebrated with his Hammer House squad. The grudge between to the two fighters will finally be settled in Ireland in January.

More fights are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
