"Randy Couture willing to fight in the UFC once more"
MMAjunkie.com Staff
sports.yahoo.com
August 29, 2008
Reigning UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture could return to the Ultimate Fighting Championship by year’s end as part of an out-of-court settlement with the organization.
Multiple sources close to the fighter, speaking exclusively to MMAjunkie.com, today said that Couture is willing to fight once more for the UFC, possibly before the end of the year, as a potential resolution to his ongoing legal battles with the fight promotion.
However, Couture himself could not be reached for comment, and it’s unknown if the UFC is even considering the offer at this point.
According to one source, as part of Couture’s concession to return the octagon, the 45-year-old UFC hall-of-famer would want to walk away “clear and free” from the organization after the bout.
Couture (16-8 MMA, 13-5 UFC), who hasn’t fought since a third-round TKO victory over fellow UFC heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga in August 2007, resigned from the organization two months later over what he perceived to be a lack of respect from UFC officials, issues over his pay, and the UFC’s inability to sign then-top free agent Fedor Emelianenko.
However, Zuffa LLC officials believe, per his fight contract, that Couture’s next two bouts must be in the UFC. Couture had said that he wanted his resignation upheld so he could move on with his career, including a potential bout with Emelianenko outside the UFC.
Back in February, Couture signed a deal with Mark Cuban’s Dallas-based HDNet Fights promotion. The organization then filed suit against the UFC in Dallas district court to get a declaratory judgment concerning the contractual status of Couture. However, earlier this month, a Texas appeals court ruled in favor of Zuffa and granted the organization’s request for a stay against the motion.
In conditionally granting the stay, the court effectively deferred the case between Zuffa and Couture to arbitration to determine the fighter’s contractual obligations to the UFC.
The ruling all but ensures that this case will be decided by a Nevada arbitrator and not by a Texas court, though it’s likely that HDNet will appeal to the Texas Supreme Court. Arbitration between Zuffa and Couture reportedly has been under way in Las Vegas since early July.
Despite Couture’s resignation, during a UFC 82 press conference in March, UFC President Dana White said that he had offered Couture a fight with now-interim UFC heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on two different occasions. Although the fight never came to fruition, White has never ruled out the possibility of Couture returning to the organization.
In the other squabble between the UFC and Couture, the five-time champion’s employment contract, which is separate from his fight contract, is the focus of a breach of contract lawsuit filed by Zuffa on Jan. 14 in Las Vegas. Zuffa contends that Couture violated the one-year non-compete clause in his contract by having his name and likeness used to promote fights outside of the UFC.
Couture’s UFC employment contract expires on Oct. 11 of this year.
slightly off topic, but i just met tommy chong a few minutes ago on the street in halifax?!?
that's amazing, i'm sure he was a cool guy but i need to hear the story. I'm still trying to decide if i should go see him and cheech or vfest on the 6th.
i heard about the randy rumour, the only thing that upsets me about it is that we won't see Fedor/Randy on new years :(
I'd love to see Randy/Werdum(Brock if not werdum) and then the winner goes up against Nog/Mir for the undisputed title.

yeah, we'll have to wait and see on randy, eh? i really didn't think he'd come back (to the UFC anyway), but there seems to be a lot of speculation out and about...it's too bad mir is already slated to fight big nog. randy vs. big nog is one i'd definitely like to see, probably more than randy vs. fedor...for me personally. i may be the only one. :)

"Report: Randy Couture could return to UFC for bout with Brock Lesnar"
by MMAjunkie.com Staff
Aug 30, 2008
Rumors regarding UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture's (16-8 MMA, 8-5 UFC) possible return to the UFC, first reported by MMAjunkie.com, are continuing to build momentum.
Five Ounces of Pain recently reported that preliminary negotiations would have Couture return for UFC 91 on Nov. 15 in Portland, Ore.
New reports from BloodyElbow.com confirm the previously reported negotiations between Couture and the UFC. Additionally, the reports claim that Couture's next fight would be the UFC 91 main event against Brock Lesnar (2-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC).
It is unknown at this time whether the bout would be for Couture's UFC heavyweight title.
Couture has been inactive for over a year while waiting out the Oct. 11 end of his current UFC contract. BloodyElbow.com is reporting the bout with Lesnar would be under a new contract that would lock Couture into the UFC long-term, but the new deal would also likely pay more and offer additional benefits.
MMA Rated has also reported that the UFC is considering a departure from recent policy and may be open to co-promoting a bout with M-1 Global between Couture and WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (28-1). M-1 Global currently holds Emelianenko's contract.
The UFC previously tried and failed to secure Emelianenko's services. It is unclear if the issues that previously prevented the bout between Couture and Emelianenko have now been solved.
Additional reports from the Wrestling Observer note that Couture's new deal would be for three fights. In addition to Lesnar and Emelianenko, possible future opponents discussed with Couture include UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and a fourth bout with former UFC light-heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell.
MMAjunkie.com was unable to confirm the multiple reports with Couture.

Couture vs. Lesnar Possible for UFC 91 Nov. 15
by Sam Caplan
August 30, 2008
thefightnetwork.com
Various online reports in recent days have surfaced claiming that disgruntled UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture has been involved in negotiations with Zuffa about a possible return to the promotion.
Adding additional fuel to those reports is Michael Rome of BloodyElbow.com, who reported Friday that he had confirmed negotiations are indeed taking place between Couture and the UFC. And as first mentioned by FiveOuncesOfPain.com on Thursday, Rome also adds that Couture’s first fight back with the company could take place at UFC 91 on November 15 in Portland, Oregon against Brock Lesnar. It is unclear whether the Couture vs. Lesnar fight would have a title at stake.
According to Rome, the deal currently on the table would not be a settlement that would bring Couture back under the terms of his old deal, but an entirely new deal that would offer an increase in compensation over his old agreement.
Five Ounces of Pain was first informed of the possibility of a Couture return earlier this week but was unable to report the story with complete confidence. However, it is obvious at this point that Couture’s return is more than just a rumor and at some point soon it could become a reality.
In addition to Bloody Elbow, MMAjunkie.com was the first to report earlier this week about the possibility of a Couture return. And after Bloody Elbow published its report last night, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer issued a report of his own as well.
According Meltzer’s report, the terms of Couture’s new deal would be for three fights. After re-debuting vs. Lesnar, future opponents discussed include current UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell, and even currentWAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko.
Expectations about a possible Fedor vs. Couture bout under the UFC banner should be tempered, as Meltzer also stated in his report that many of the past issues that have prevented Fedor from signing with the UFC still exist.
While a deal making a Couture return to the UFC possible is still not yet official, Ariel Helwani of MMARated.com is reporting that the deal could be finalized as early as this Tuesday. Helwani is also reporting that the UFC has received a formal proposal from M-1 to co-promote the much-anticipated Fedor vs. Couture fight as the second fight in Couture’s new proposed UFC contract.

UFC will make Couture's return official at Noon PT
By Steve Cofield
After 11 months of fighting in the courts it looks like the UFC and Randy Couture have buried the hatchet. The promotion is holding a press conference on Tuesday at Noon PT to announce a new deal with the heavyweight champion.
Couture is expected to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 in Portland in what could be the biggest pay-per-view show in the UFC's history. There is also talk now that with a win over Lesnar, Couture could face Fedor Emelianenko in 2009, under the UFC banner.

guess we'll have to wait till tomorrow but i hope this is all true
holy shit! thanks leafs! i hope it is true, too! not so long ago, randy seemed pretty intent on not fighting in the ufc again. i guess anything can happen, given time (...oh, and $$$ ). this will set up some huge potential matches for the HW division!

Go Randy!
sounds like we'll have an answer tomorrow, and it seems pretty much a done
deal!
also, it's very cool that randy will be fighting in oregon. have to wonder if that was merely coincidence or if that was an intentional move as part of the negotiations.
edit: this post no longer makes "sense", "since" the fight is happening in vegas.
UFC President Dana White will hold a media conference call later today to make a major UFC announcement. The call will take place at 3pm ET/12Noon PT. Check back with UFC.com for the full report.
My initial reaction to his return is that i think he should give it up already, and give some of the other guys in this division a chance! I find the heavyweight division to be a bit of a snoozefest to begin with, and with the same old guys fighting all the time, nothing ever changes!
i think the HW division is a mess anyways. getting rid of Andrei? Mirko left. Brandon Vera moved down to LHW didn't he? those three guys were my only hope left for HW's, and they're gone!
what we need is new HW talent. not Randy.... sorry guys....

i agree about letting the young guys get at it, but if randy can come in and perform like he last did i don't see any problem with him competing until he can't hang anymore. A guy like Ken Shamrock comes to mind
The HW division is a mess and i agree that i wish arlovski and cro cop didn't leave but it will grow and i think with randy coming back it opens alot more fights up. I personally think Brandon should have moved down to lhw earlier but i can see why he is loved at hw, he doesn't give a f---- and i love that kind of attitude.
With randy coming back it opens up for a Lesnar/Randy match, Randy/Nog (who have never faced each other), and will hopefully help entice Fedor into ufc competition.
And don't worry about the new HW talent... the Next Big Thing is here!!!

i didn't think you would enjoy this news, ceg. i'm with you on the HW division being boring most of the time. i do like a few of them and i'm just happy the soap opera is over again, for now.
with mirko possibly coming back in 2009, "the next big thing" that leafs mentioned , cain velasquez, randy, werdum, and big nog at least there is the start of some very intriguing matches (randy vs. big nog, please!!! ). if andrei and brandon were still around it would be even better, but it was a stupid mistake to let andrei go and i think brandon will get better at LHW, in my opinion. what a strange rollercoaster the HW division is...let's see some LW's!

Looking at your guys picks, i think ceg is right with the UD for chuck, but i still had to go with KO.
I also think Mookie might be right with the pellegrino pick, i think he will take the 1st round, but i think tavares will take the 3rd. If it goes to decision, I think it comes down to the 2nd and if kurt tires early, i think it'll be tavares' round. I also think tavares could win by sub in the 3rd though.
And sorry guys, i hope i'm wrong, but, i think jason is getting beat up.

Just a casual fan but I'll probably check this one out, looks like a nice matchcard. I'll keep my eye out on the Lesnar-Couture match in Nov. as well.
I was looking up for info on the Kimbo-Shamrock fight, didn't realized that was a different promotion. reminds me of the old WCW/WWF days, sadly wrestling has been dead for the 6 years:( ...now been trying to convert to MMA.

There is also talk now that with a win over Lesnar, Couture could face Fedor Emelianenko in 2009, under the UFC banner.

holy shit! thanks leafs! i hope it is true, too! not so long ago, randy seemed pretty intent on not fighting in the ufc again. i guess anything can happen, given time (...oh, and $$$ ). this will set up some huge potential matches for the HW division!
sounds like we'll have an answer tomorrow, and it seems pretty much a done
deal!
edit: this post no longer makes "sense", "since" the fight is happening in vegas.

I was looking up for info on the Kimbo-Shamrock fight, didn't realized that was a different promotion. reminds me of the old WCW/WWF days, sadly wrestling has been dead for the 6 years:( ...now been trying to convert to MMA.
