personally, this main card doesn't do a whole lot for me. lots of stars, but three perplexing matches. if shogun was still supposed to be facing chuck and rich was facing henderson, i would find it a lot more interesting. it's too bad shogun is out until december.
i'm looking forward to the undercard, though! it should be KDH's last time in the pre-lims, and pellegrino vs. tavares and chonan vs. carneiro should be outstanding.
good luck to matt hamill this time around! great opportunity for him to get a big win.

good, i'm not crazy! well, maybe just in this case. haha
yeah, a franklin vs. henderson match up would have been great. i don't understand why they didn't do it. the main event i can understand because of shogun's injuries, and then the postponement, but chuck probably couldn't ask for a better style match there.
i feel like matt has a very good chance of taking that one, and putting palhares against henderson in palhares' second fight in the ufc doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.
he told me to tell you and releash he says hello. he stopped by for dinner last night. the guy won't leave me alone!
...and for some reason i can't get the phrase "ass over tea kettle" out of my head...haha
i can see where he's coming from.... you're a very charming guy!
i'm picturing you, me, Matt and Releash all crammed in your fort watching MMA and drinking beers. sweet.
LOL... ass over tea kettle.... i think that's one of my mom's phrases....
seriously, though, that was a great time we had there. the fort may have to be rebuilt after matt's fight with rich so we can invite matt over to explain the match to us. sounds like a good scenario, though. good times!
When: Monday, 4-6 p.m.
Where: Woodfield Mall, Comcast Connections Court J.

"UFC finally hits town"
Top fighters will be on hand Monday to promote Oct. 25 card
August 15, 2008
BY ROMAN MODROWSKI
The UFC's first official stop in Chicago will be on Monday as Dana White and some of his top fighters will be in town to promote their Oct. 25 card at Allstate Arena. Their arrival is not a moment too soon.
I've been writing about the UFC for several years, and the feedback suggests this city is primed for this event. White said Chicago is a location the UFC plans to hit often.
The UFC did things the right way in waiting for a law to be changed so mixed martial arts could be regulated by the Illinois Athletic Commission. It took time, but this card should make it worth the wait.
Monday's news conference will feature the top four fighters for UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote.
Middleweight champion Anderson Silva, arguably the UFC's top pound-for-pound fighter, will be on hand with opponent Patrick Cote.
The top undercard bout, which is good enough to headline a card, is between Thiago Alves and Diego Sanchez. Both fighters will be at the news conference, which begins at 1 p.m. outside the Park Grill restaurant at Millennium Park. A UFC spokesperson said the event can be seen from the area around ''The Bean'' sculpture.
Tickets go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Monday through Ticketmaster and at the Allstate box office. Members of the UFC Fight Club on ufc.com can purchase tickets beginning today. Ticket prices range from $50 to $600.
''I'm superexcited about coming to Chicago,'' Sanchez said. ''It's my first time there, so I'm coming in a day early on Sunday.''
All four fighters will be signing autographs at Woodfield Mall -- Comcast Connections Court J -- from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday.
Surprisingly, none of the four fighters has been to Chicago before, but Chicago MMA fans are familiar with these guys, especially White. The September interview in Playboy, which hits newsstands today, features the UFC president. Other than Chuck Liddell and ''Rampage'' Jackson, White may have the most recognizable face in the UFC, largely because he's often on the Spike TV reality show ''The Ultimate Fighter.''
Sanchez won the middleweight finale in Season 1 of ''TUF,'' and he went on to win his next five UFC bouts, including a unanimous decision over the tough Karo Parisyan. A staph infection in his leg, which became a serious situation, led to a loss in his next bout. And he lost a split decision to Jon Fitch last September.
But Sanchez, who recently moved from Albuquerque to train out of San Diego, is back on the rise after winning his last two by a technical knockout and a submission.
''I feel I'm exactly where I need to be,'' he said. ''I showed dominance in the last two fights by stopping my opponents. That was something I was working on.
''My two losses were both by decision. Unfortunately, some will settle for wins given to them by judges and others will try to finish their opponent. I think Thiago will try to fight. I have respect for him as one of the best fighters in the world.''
That's not just hype for an opponent. Alves is on a four-fight knockout streak after dispatching Parisyan and the legendary Matt Hughes in his most recent bouts. Alves, who's from Brazil and is training in Miami, has won five in a row overall.
''I know I'm going to knock him out,'' Alves said. ''It doesn't matter what round.
''I want to put on an exciting fight for the fans. Diego is a pretty tough guy, but I can knock him out. But I have to take him down and submit him, I'll do that. I'll be on top of my game.''

Quinton Jackson's arraignment delayed as investigation continues
by Steve Sievert
Aug 17, 2008
Quinton Jackson's scheduled arraignment last Friday on charges following his July arrest was postponed, as police and the Orange County District Attorney's office continue their investigation.
The 30-year-old former UFC light heavyweight champion was arrested on July 15 on suspicion of hit-and-run driving, felony evading and reckless driving. A new arraignment date has not been scheduled.
The delay could put a crimp in the UFC's plans to bring Jackson back to the Octagon as early as November, which, even in our lenient, second-chance society might be premature.
While Jackson has not been charged in the case, the allegations are serious. Jackson's alleged actions behind the wheel caused pedestrians to "flee for their lives," according to the Costa Mesa police report. A hit-and-run conviction in California carries a sentence that ranges from probation to three years in state prison. The felony evading and reckless driving charges could result in a maximum of an additional three years in prison.
Further complicating the case for Jackson, and a potential factor in the delayed arraignment, is the miscarriage suffered by Holli Griggs, a motorist Jackson allegedly sideswiped with his truck while evading police. According to Griggs' attorney, his client had a miscarriage following the accident. She was 16 weeks pregnant. It's not yet known if the miscarriage was a direct result of the accident.
UFC President Dana White addressed Jackson's status with the UFC at a news conference prior to last weekend's UFC 87 event in Minneapolis. White spoke of his support of Jackson, said exhaustion was the contributing factor to his erratic behavior in July, and expects to have the former champ back in the Octagon soon.

for sure. i'm always wishing that more people would get a chance to see the talent on the pre-lims, especially KDH on this card. (i'm a biased KDH fan ) at least people will get to check out yoshida again if they missed his debut match against war machine and we'll see how martin kampmann fares against a top MW.
...which reminds me...sorry to everyone about not getting the 87 pre-lims out to you all. i could only find them in a huge file that i couldn't send. :( luke cummo vs. tamdan mccrory was showing for free at ufc.com, though...hoping the files for the 88 card are smaller. oh, and some wmv's for ceg.
Jason Day out, Jason MacDonald in versus Jason Lambert at UFC 88
by MMAjunkie.com
Aug 19, 2008
Veteran middleweight Jason MacDonald (20-10 MMA, 4-3 UFC) will replace an injured Jason Day (17-7 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and will fight Jason Lambert (23-8 MMA, 4-3 UFC) at next month's UFC 88 event.
The fight is scheduled for the preliminary card of UFC 88, which takes place at Atlanta's Allstate Arena on Sept. 6.
Sherdog.com first reported the bout, though MMAjunkie.com couldn't immediately reach the fighters' camps for confirmation.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the UFC had not officially announced the change.
Day, who was forced off the card with an arm injury, was scheduled to be Lambert's first opponent at 185 pounds.
Instead the former heavyweight and recent light heavyweight will meet MacDonald, who fought less than two weeks ago at UFC 87. There, he suffered a third-round submission loss to Demian Maia in an entertaining main-card bout. After defeating Chris Leben and pushing his win streak to six fights in his UFC debut, MacDonald is 3-3 in the organization, which includes the loss to Maia.
Lambert, meanwhile, hopes to avoid his third straight loss -- and his fourth loss in his past five fights. After an eight-fight win streak that included stoppage victories over Rob MacDonald, Terry Martin and Branden Lee Hinkle in the UFC, Lambert has since suffered knockouts losses to Rashad Evans, Wilson Gouveira and Luis Cane. A second-round KO of Renato "Babalu" Sobral was the only bright spot in those past four fights.

woohoo!! i'm so excited to see Jason MacDonald fight again!
i admit, i've been crushing on him a little since his fight with Damien...
hahah... too many Jasons....
you need the "i (heart) fighters" tee, ceg! he is "the athlete", after all. i'm surpised he took this one so quick, but i guess he was in fight shape anyway, not too damaged after the fight with demian, and he'll be facing a guy cutting to 185 for the first time. could be a wise decision that might pick him up a good win.
oh, and one for releash...looks like gray is facing rich clementi in chicago and not matt wiman as originally rumoured. rich is a quiet 7-1 since losing to din thomas in his return after the TUF show. could be a chance for gray to stake a claim as one of the top contenders in the LW division. good thing for gray, too, is that he just finished helping train sam stout for rich clementi for the fight in april!
nah.... just an "i (heart) Nova Scotia" tee.... or wait... should it be "Nova Scotians"?
ps. check your PM's! time sensitive Neil Young Tour info!!!
speaking of hearts..i think i am having an attack of that variety after hearing this news... it's been twelve years since he's been here!
ELITEXC'S SILVA, AFFLICTION'S DEWEES FAIL DRUG TESTS
Thursday, August 21, 2008
by Tom Hamlin - MMAWeekly.com
California State Athletic Commission Assistant Executive Director Bill Douglas has confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that Affliction fighter Edwin Dewees and EliteXC fighter Antonio Silva have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. On Aug. 1, Douglas said that both cards were “not out of the woods” and positive tests were likely on both cards.
Dewees, 26, tested positive for Nandrolone, a common illegal steroid, following his losing effort against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at Affliction “Banned” on July 19. The level of drug in Dewees’ system, 499ng/mL, far outstrips other high profile fighters who have been ensnared by the CSAC since it began drug testing in March of 2006.
“The level of drug in his system makes it very hard to explain,” Douglas told MMAWeekly.com.
Also hard to explain is Silva’s positive test, which showed the presence of Boldenone, an anabolic steroid mainly veterinarian in nature. According to Douglas, the CSAC does not record the level of Boldenone in a fighter’s system, as the drug’s long half-life in the body make false positives extremely unlikely.
Both men have been suspended one year from the end of their respective bouts, and have been fined $2,500.
Dewees declined comment to MMAWeekly.com, saying he needed to check with his lawyer before making any statements.
Silva and his representatives were unavailable for comment.
Aside from Justin Levens, who has already been reported as testing positive for pain killers, all other EliteXC and Affliction fighters from the noted July events tested negative for any banned substances, whether recreational or performance enhancing.

Silva Pleads Innocence to Steroid Allegations
Thursday, August 21, 2008
by Loretta Hunt
EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio Silva and his representatives have denied allegations that the 28-year-old Brazilian took steroids prior to his July 26 contest against Justin Eilers, and they’re willing to fight to prove it.
On Thursday, the California State Athletic Commission released urinalysis results pointing the finger at the 6-foot-4, nearly 300-pound Brasilia native for Boldenone, an anabolic agent. Silva was immediately suspended for one year and fined $2,500, but may protest the disciplinary action and request a hearing before the commission –- something Silva’s manager, Alex Davis, plans to pursue without hesitation.
“It’s a false positive. He got tested positive for something he didn’t take,” said Davis from his home outside Rio de Janeiro. “I will not let my fighter sit back and be wronged like this. I just won’t.”
Silva was notified of the positive test result Wednesday via a phone call from the CSAC, though Davis said rumors of his fighter’s results had been circulating during a prolonged testing period, which included independent tests of two separate samples conducted by Quest Diagnostics and the World Anti-Doping Agency-approved Laboratoire De Controle Du Dopage in Montreal.
“I did not use the steroid Boldenone, or any other steroid of prohibited substance,” Silva wrote in a prepared statement distributed to Sherdog.com. “I don’t agree and never have agreed with the use of this kind of product in order to win, for this is cheating. I will go to the full extent of my power and the law to prove my innocence in this matter.”
In June 2007, Silva (11-1) was denied licensure in California when an abnormal brain scan of the athlete showed signs of a tumor. Silva -- who suffers from the chronic disease acromegaly, which causes enlargement of the extremities and face due to an overactive pituitary gland -- underwent surgery two months later to remove the tumor and has fought three times since.
Davis said Silva has taken legal nutritional supplements during his training, but that the use of steroids in light of his fighter’s medical condition could prove fatal.
“He can’t take stuff like that because he has acromegaly,” said Davis. “All of his hormone levels are a problem regularly, so he wouldn’t be able to for risk of his life.”
Boldenone is commonly utilized in veterinary practices, primarily for the treatment of horses. It is also prevalent in bodybuilding circles, where it is illegal. One of the more imposing figures in the division, Silva has cut weight in the past to make the 265-pound heavyweight limit.
Davis said himself and American Top Team, which has groomed Silva as a professional fighter since his arrival in the U.S. nearly two years ago, have already set the wheels in motion to hire a toxicologist and legal representation to shepherd Silva’s appeal.
Silva faces an uphill battle in California. In December 2007, former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk’s one-year suspension for nandrolone use was reduced to six months after a five-month appeals process fielded by world-renowned doping lawyer Howard Jacobs failed to clear the Minnesota wrestler of the charges.
Sherk was suspended by the CSAC following his successful July 2007 title defense over Hermes Franca at UFC 73 in Sacramento, Calif. Though the proceedings were criticized by the UFC and others for the CSAC’s inconsistent procedures both during Sherk’s sample collection and his subsequent hearings, Zuffa stripped Sherk of his title in the end.
Silva was the first-ever champion crowned by the fledgling promotion following his second-round pummeling of Eilers on July 26. Silva's impressive showing capped off four wins for the heavy-handed competitor in EliteXC's cage, and Davis said the organization will not be quick to jump to conclusions.
“They’re being very fair. What they’re saying is they won’t strip him of his title until he’s proved guilty,” said Davis.
Jeremy Lappen, EliteXC's Head of Operations, refrained from comment, but said a public statement from the promotion would be forthcoming.

easy there, cowboy! we don't want any medical emergencies here.... especially when Dr. J isn't around!
it's ok, she's on call. i am calm now. psyched for neil, though!
i was doing me some readin' learnin' on the intenet to find out more about bolderone in silva's case. apparently it is present in many legal supplements. if that's the case, and they did admit to him using legal supplements, then it's possible he was unaware that an over the counter supplement (or an ingredient in it) could be banned by the athletic commission. should be up to his team to make sure ANYTHING he's taking is not on the banned list, whether it be something you can buy legally in a store or something prescribed. the fighter should know these things too, but silva doesn't speak english, so...the onus might be on his management there.
I hope he is though! I always liked him a lot more than Tito Ortiz
did you not see his fight vs wandy???
watch the fight in a couple weeks with chuck/evans... I hope it doesn't go past the 1st sorry, I hate rashad
09/19/05, 05/09/06, 05/10/06
i'm with you on the rashad fight, leafs. i'm hoping under a round, so we can see some pre-lims!
ELITEXC CONFIRMS KEN SHAMROCK VS KIMBO ON CBS
Monday, August 25, 2008
by Ken Pishna - MMAWeekly.com
With less than six weeks to go before EliteXC’s next CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights event, speculation has been ongoing as to who Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson will face on Oct. 4. That speculation can now be put to rest as MMAWeekly.com has confirmed with EliteXC vice president Jared Shaw that Kimbo will face UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock.
Much attention was drawn recently to EliteXC’s cancelling of its Sept. 20 event in New Mexico, the company stating that it was necessary to do so to focus its promotional efforts on the pivotal Oct. 4 event on CBS.
Shaw supported that statement in confirming Ken Shamrock, saying, “We were clearing the runway for Oct. 4 and we’re landing with some heavy artillery. Kimbo emerged as king of backyard brawls and is a YouTube sensation, now he wants to lay claim to the title of ‘The World’s Most Dangerous Man.’”
Though Shamrock is well past the peak of his career – he’s currently on a five-fight losing streak – the facts are that he has a record of 26-13-2, he has been in this sport since before Kimbo left his teenage years, and the strongest part of his game, submissions, is one of the weakest areas for his opponent.
“Shamrock is by far the toughest test of Kimbo’s young career,” added Shaw. “He is no stranger to big, tough fights. Ken realizes this is his opportunity to add a storybook finish to an illustrious career. He says he’s seen holes like Swiss cheese in Kimbo’s game.”
Indeed, Shamrock has been fighting since before the first Ultimate Fighting Championship event, emerging first for Pancrase in Japan before being called upon to fight in a one-night, eight-man tournament at UFC 1 that also included that night’s eventual champion, Royce Gracie… in 1993.
EliteXC is looking to capitalize not only on Kimbo’s unique appeal as a “YouTube sensation,” but also on Shamrock’s background as one of the forefather’s of the sport.
“We see a tremendous fight for the casual MMA fan that has caught on to guys like Kimbo, while at the same time appealing to the hardcore fans who have grown up with Ken Shamrock,” said Shaw.
“We feel this will test Kimbo and the maturation of his MMA game. Ken being a veteran of the game is going to look to expose Kimbo’s weaknesses. It’s time for Kimbo to show his continued growth and the knowledge that he now has, and put himself in a situation for the biggest victory of is career.”
It is no secret that EliteXC has attached itself to the popularity of the Kimbo train and wants to use that popularity to make sure that the pivotal Oct. 4 event on CBS is a ratings success. A win for Kimbo would be a tremendous boost for the promotion in the casual fan’s eyes due to Shamrock’s name recognition.
“It’s pretty simple. For Kimbo Slice, he wants to become the world’s most dangerous man and he wants to become the future EliteXC heavyweight champ. The only way for him to achieve those two things is going through Ken Shamrock,” Shaw stated.
But what happens if Shamrock derails Kimbo? What does Shaw see for the future if Shamrock’s experience prevails?
“If Ken Shamrock wins this fight, he’s on top of the world again. He’s once again proven that he is the most dangerous man in the world. He beat the guy that many consider one of the most unpredictable and dangerous striker’s in the heavyweight division.”
In addition to Shamrock and Kimbo, Shaw also confirmed to MMAWeekly.com the rest of the main card, set to air live on CBS. Jake Shields will make the first defense of his EliteXC welterweight title when he faces British fighter Paul Daley, Gina Carano returns to face Kelly Kobald, and Benji Radach makes his promotional debut fighting former EliteXC middleweight champion Murilo “Ninja” Rua.
If time permits Shaw added that a second female bout, between Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos and Yoko Takahashi, would also air on CBS.

QUINTON JACKSON CHARGED WITH TWO FELONIES
Monday, August 25, 2008
by Tom Hamlin - MMAWeekly.com
The Orange County District Attorney’s office has formally charged former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson for a July 15 hit-and-run melee that landed the popular fighter in jail.
In a press release issued on Monday, Jackson is accused of sideswiping two cars and subsequently fleeing Costa Mesa police officers as they attempted to stop him. In the short chase, Jackson allegedly damaged another car and nearly hit several pedestrians at a bus stop. His left front tire shredded, he eventually surrendered to police officers in nearby Newport Beach.
The 30-year-old Jackson has been charged with one felony count of evading while driving recklessly, one felony count of evading a peace officer and driving against traffic, three misdemeanor counts of hit and run with property damage, and one misdemeanor count of reckless driving.
His arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 28. Deputy District Attorney Keith Bogardus will request a $25,000 bail for the fighter.
Notably absent were charges related to Holli Griggs, a passenger in one of the cars that Jackson sideswiped. Griggs was 16 weeks pregnant with a boy when she miscarried two weeks after the incident. Orange County DA spokeswoman Farrah Emami told MMAWeekly.com that a subsequent investigation of the miscarriage did not implicate Jackson.
“We reviewed all the medical records and spoke with the victim’s physician, and the evidence showed that the loss of the fetus was not related to or a result of the crash caused by the defendant,” Emami said.
Jackson re-emerged in the public eye at UFC 87 following a long period of silence. At a pre-fight press conference for “Seek and Destroy,” he appeared to be in good spirits, a far cry from the man who was placed under mental observation by police officers shortly after the chase. The charismatic light heavyweight said he was back on track and thanked UFC president Dana White for getting him there.
“I’m already training, so my next opponent better watch out,” he said. “But that was the worst mistake I ever made, I got Dana over my back all the time. ‘Did you eat? Did you sleep? Drink your water?’ It’s like I’m two years old, but it’s all good,” he continued.
If convicted, Jackson could face up to three years in prison. He and UFC representatives were unavailable for comment.
