  • i thought cb vs. amir would have made a better finale than a semi final match, but we'll see how it goes...

That must have been cool , which fighters did you guys get to meet??

as Mookie mentioned, we met Jorge Gurgel, Matt Hammill, and Mac Danzig, as well as Eddie Bravo and Dana White....

    it was awesome. :D

they really got some great pictures from the event in their slideshow. both good fights had some good captures. i wish the tv broadcast had those angles! :D

i'm hoping the two awesome matches from the show will be what people remember...haha

starting to get excited for this weekend, as i'm an alves fan and am anxious to see how he does against matt hughes.

I think Thiago has a really good shot at beating Hughes. Alves is on a nice hot streak right now. I'm a bit pissed that I will be missing the fight. My girlfriend and I where invited by her mom to spend the weekend at her mom's summer place out in Pennsylvania and she doesn't have cable :(

damn, i wish i was closer to "upper canada"...i could get fixed up, meet up with you and ceg for the show this weekend! :) for now, sorry again about complaining!

    i like this plan. :D

but i'd be happy to wait 3 more weeks, so we can catch some other shows together!! ;):p hint, hint.

Did Dana White end up being a nice guy??

    he was great! :)

as we were heading out to dinner after the weigh-ins, we passed by a small group of people crowded on the sidewalk. we peeked at what was going on, and lo and behold, it was Dana, signing autographs and taking photos with fans. He was really accessible and friendly, and didn't seem in a rush to get away. He shook our hands, smiled at ReleasH and called her "babe" :p, asked us all where we were from, complimented all the Canadian fans, and told ReleasH he hopes to bring an event to Nashville soon. ;) Then his assistant took a picture with the three of us and Dana, and we went on our way.

    :D

after watching the countdown show and hearing the story about hughes rubbing the loss to spencer fisher in thiago's face, i'm really hoping he catches hughes in a triangle...just for poetic justice. he did the same thing to georges st-pierre, making fun of him for not knowing the armbar defense, only to lose by...?...armbar! :D to GSP. :) the guy hasn't lost a lot of matches, but they're all but one by submission, so i guess it's insecurities that make him feel the need to belittle others with his comments.

in any case, i think thiago wins this one on the feet. he has developed great takedown defense that will surprise a lot of people i think. i can see him coming out and feeling out the first round, maybe getting taken down, and coming on strong in the second. i'm not even going to compare alves' striking skills with hughes', as hughes has virtually none. if thiago gets confident enough to land those leg kicks and let his stiking go, he will pick hughes apart easily. (i think i recall you saying you train in muay thai and bjj, so we have to go with the muay thai guy, right? ;))

    post-fight interview from hughes.."i thought it was a knee, i didn't know it was a punch." D

there, mamasan, i have played out the whole fight for you, so you're not missing anything! :D sorry you will be missing this one. sounds like a nice weekend, though.

I said Tito who will beat Machida's ass. He smiled and said whoever can catch him, since all he does is run!! I told him I was going nuts when he applied the triangle and he said thanks for the suport. It turned out to be a great day, nice people in line and I got to meet my favorite fighter.

kind of what i would expect him to say lol

sounds like an awsome day :)

i'd like to go with alves because i don't like hughes but i really think he's going to win. It may sound crazy but i see hughes taking thiago down and either TKO'ing him or doing in well enough in all 3 rounds to win by decision.
I hope i'm wrong, maybe after i watch the countdown i'll change my mind :)

I think you are spot on in your analysis of how this fight will go. Definitely have to get behind the Muay Thai fighter. We hopefully we are right and Alves picks Hughes apart and knocks that ego of his down a few knotches. I will at least get to see the fight on replay wghen I get home Sunday night. I can't wait.

just wait until you hear the way thiago says, "i didn't forget" when they're talking about hughes' making fun of him for losing to spencer. hughes doesn't remember...thiago does. :D

good luck on the picks, leafs. again, this is a tough one. you pulled through the last one with flying colours though. top twenty baby! :D
  • keeping you updated on hotlanta, releash...:)

Chuck Liddell Vs. TBA (possibly Mauircio Rua)
    Tim Boetsch Vs. James Lee
  • couldn't watch the weigh-ins here in north america, but early reports ;) indicate that thiago alves came in three pounds over at 174 lbs. sounds like he wasn't given time to cut the additional weight and the match will be at a catch weight, likely 175 lbs.

i'm not sure if they have changed the rules in england or not, or if they thought three lbs. was too much for alves to cut in an hour, but hughes also came in over weight for his championship match with carlos newton in england and was given the time to cut and make weight...

guess we'll have to wait for an explanation.

Thanks for the update Mookie. I missed the TUF episode because the cable at the hospital doesn't get Spike, so I've been avoiding the thread a little so as not to read any comments.

Gotta get my picks in tonight!!

i won't spoil the episode but i'm guessing you can guess who had one of the funnier lines of the night..."we're going to write that strategy down...'whoop his ass' " (in high pitched voice...:D)

darn no spike at hospital! darn comcast! :D
  • i'm speculating that they didn't give alves any time to cut the additional weight, which is strange because when matt hughes did the same thing in his first fight in england (although it was his first defense and a title was on the line...) he was given time to cut the weight that he missed. perplexing.

    UFC 85 Weigh-In Results
    By Thomas Gerbasi
    LONDON, June 6, 2008

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes calls it his comeback fight, and even though he will be doing it at a catchweight of 174 pounds after his UFC 85 opponent, Thiago Alves, didn’t make weight today at the O2 Arena, he believes a win over ‘The Pitbull’ Saturday night will be the first step on his road back to the 170-pound crown.

“This is a comeback fight,” said Hughes, a two-time welter champion who weighed in at 170 pounds Friday. “I’m very happy to fight an up and comer like Thiago. If I beat him he’s someone I can put on my resume for down the road.”

“Tomorrow night is gonna be a war,” said Alves, 174. “You’re gonna see the best ‘Pitbull’ ever and I’m gonna knock him out.”

Got my picks in just under the wire. I'm not very confident in these picks, particularly the undercard. I went with my gut again, so we'll see if it works out better for me this time. I have to beat Shamrock's Twin one this one, otherwise I can't claim his performance last time was beginner's luck. It would be nice to win one of these things at some point too. ;)
