    agreed.

sure, i may look at others and admire/appreciate what they have...but not jealous b/c you just don't know what else is going on in their lives. i think more than anything jealousy is an insecurity issue. if you are jealous, you must not feel happy/content with yourself and/or your situation, whatever it may be. sure, we all want to strive for more...but true jealousy is above and beyond that. definitely a wasted/pointless emotion, it changes nothing but can drive you nuts i would imagine!

you said it for me in your post, jealousy will drive people to strive for more, which is a good thing in the end.

seriously, the concern is over length, which is irrelevant. it's all about girth.

    :D

actually I think people get jealous because they don't really ever get their fill of cake. like Steinbeck said "there is a whole mountain of cake, and some people still will not eat their fill" (east of eden) so, even if they are not hungry - they have to be envious of what they DONT have...sad really.

i do NOT see jealousy in a positive light, at ALL. jealousy is petty, rooted in insecurity imho. to strive for more in life is to believe you DESERVE more, want more, work for more....jealousy has nothing to do with it. perhaps SOME people may get 'motivated' by jealousy...but for most, i think it poison.

    No, I am serious.
But I really think the OP is thinking more along the lines of the real shallow type of jealousy and not what you are thinking...the envy of just wanting to be like others or knowing you are not a stranger to the human race. I dig what you are saying.

yeah, being motivated and being jealous are two different things to me. it's healthier to be motivated by what you desire for yourself rather than desiring what others have, my 2cents anyway

i've no interest in walking in anybody's shoes but my own, cuz they might be even more screwed up than me!

Probably the same reason people get insecure or try to make themselves feel better. Fish for attention. I am thinking they are all bound together.
Worried someone will be liked better than them.

    I so agree. :)

Fishing for attention yep??? Ahhh the irony.

    indeed!

i have yet to see something *positive* ever come from jealousy. it usually poisons people, relationships, life.....it truly IS a wasted emotion imho. it is negative...whereas wanting more, being motivated for change...is a positive.

Seriously, I was brought up to NEVER envy anyone...I guess my mom and dad wanted their kids to know that no one is better then us and that we are not better then anyone! Although some people get jealous of someone and to tell you the truth, I only get jealous of people who win the lottery....I don't wish I were someone else EVER, but I do wish I could win some big money. It sure would be nice..:)

I agree with you totally.I was brought up the same way.But I once had a friend (for a very short time) who was rotten to the core with jealousy, she has this unshakable believe that her life was worse than anyone elses. Then I met her mother :/,who presented the same way, bitching about everyone and always picked up on peoples shortcomings, especially her daughters. They really sucked everyones soul dry with their attitude. But she had learned that from her mum,no doubt.
Jealousy and Guilt two human emotions that are destructive and limiting.

and i've seen a program about grown up men with problems who were virgins but they wanted to have what others have experienced, and so they did. trust me nothing bad came out of it.

i think the thing with jealously, most times people end up wallowing in it, and never end up doing anything about it except get angry and envious and bitter. it's easy to get consumed by it.

sure, some people get motivated in a positive way, like your example, it seems a more precarious route to take to get to the same place.

if you get jealous of people who win the lottery, then how can you say in the same sentence you don't ever wish you were someone else? wanting to win lottery like someone else won, IS wanting to be like someone else.

if you get jealous of people who win the lottery then how come you don't know how people can get jealous?

just seems a little strange why you need to ask this question

I'm jealous of an old lady who won the 23 million, do you think I want to be an old lady? No, I would like to win the lottery is all. A man won the lottery two weeks ago, do I want to be a man? Hell no, I just want to win the lotto like he did! It's very easy to understand, you're getting upset for NO reason, and that seems to happen a lot on this board! Weird!!

I've been jealous in a relationship, especially when things weren't going smooth.

Also reading fanviews here for quote some years made me pretty jealous.

And I'm jealous of Americans.. here in the Netherlands we don't have Jimmy Dean's chocolate chip pancakes & sausage on a stick..
    your light's reflected now

haha, in my eyes it's called debating :)

also you said all types of jealousy, so you come into it as well. i don't know if i ever met a person who said i want to be Britney Spears ( insert anyone else in here ) and said i want to have her body, mind, face..etc. however i'm sure there were people who said they wanted to have the same voice as she does

are they? how so? never thought of them as different, it's interesting to see distinctions

i kind of blurred mine together, in this whole thread i was talking more about jealousy. but then both terms seem quite similar to me.
