I've got to add my two cents worth here. Dogs are family and upon the death of one them they would be treated like family. What is even worse would be grieving over a lost pet and also knowing that your co-workers were ridiculing you and berating you over your feelings of loss.

Dunk, come on, anybody can see that it's nothing to do with being a pet lover. I'm not a crazy animal person but I can appreciate that the emotional distress that a person who is an animal might be under when their dog dies maybe entitles them to a day off work. People here just think you should be a bit more sensitive. It's got bugger all to do with some "love pets, hate dunk" double standard. As someone else has mentioned, what's it to you if someone has a day off work? Your grievance should be with whoever didn't allow YOU one when a friend died, no?

we have the same boss!! i didnt get an afternoon off... she did... look, it comes across bad on here, but at least 2 of the women in the office dont think its necessary for her to be off... obviously she'll be upset, but what good can she do at home (dog was put down last night at the Vets... had been ill for weeks... she was here all morning as she had a meeting, but then went home at lunchtime).
