I do not believe it has taken over.
The true fact is ...is that there is a lot more AFL supporters in Aus than NRL supporters.

i got addicted to AFL when i lived in Sydney back in '97. i was actually in Adelaide the day they won the championship. man was that party. the whole city erupted into a massive bachannal. great times. but anyways, i can't watch it here over the pond b/c no one carries it. wish i had a way to watch it though.

anybody watch the 20/20 cricket game last night? what a circus. entertaining to watch but i can't see 20/20 becoming a viable and widely-played form of cricket in the long-term, day/night games are what cricket's about
if you love somebody, set them free. if somebody loves you, don't fuck up

I can see it happening big-time in the future. I reckon we will see them a lot more and even series' will develop.

never followed the game but espn used to show alot of games and i definitely got a kick (no pun intended) when watching .. just not enuff coverage to actually get attached to a team or to be able to keep up with the league

i like those guys in the hats and coats that make the calls on the kicks and/or runs to the "goal" line .. is it a goal line?
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

Yeah...they're the goal umpires...I suppose you call it the goal line...there's no actual term for it.
Do you remember what teams you have seen play olderman?

no, i don't remember for sure. seems that there was a team from Victoria? but i don't see them on the AFL web site. maybe i am mistaken or else they were disbanded or moved. i am sure that espn showed the better teams as it was limited coverage. that may also explain why the games were always exciting and fun to watch.

Most games are pretty good, especially if there are a few dust-ups and spotfires! eheh

lol yeah I suppose. These days though in the AFL there has been a huge crackdown on fights. The league is trying to stamp them right out of the game by issueing severe suspensions to players who get involved in melees.
What's it like with Ice hockey??? Strict?

not at all, in fact, here is a joke that somewhat explains ice hockey, at least in the NHL..

"went see the flyers last night and a game broke out!"

:) hockey is the greatest game in the world, i grew up with aussie football and still like it but hockey is better to watch and more fun to play. most people porbably don't even realise hockey exists in australia though

;) fastest team game in the world mate. i don't see why it hasn't taken off here, or at least generated some significant level of attention. there's a fully functional national icehockey league here in australia and healthy leagues in every major city. it's everything aussies love in their sport: fast, physical, skillful, intense, heated, demanding, passionate.

they show some NHL games on the HD channels here .. it makes a big difference as you can easily follow the puck, however, there is nothing like watching ice hockey in person .. it's truly exciting. there has been some talk about bringing an NHL team to KC, but i don't think that it will happen.. unfortunately, we now have an AFL team. no, not Aussie Football, instead it's Arena Football. a bastardized version of american football played on a hockey flat without the ice.. i've come to think it might be interesting with the ice. HA!
