Trying to bring this thread back! After watching Game of Thrones I'm wishing that DT would be made in an HBO series. I heard there's some major issues with Ron Howard's project, so I guess there's still a possibility of that happening. Any thoughts?
I read on IMDB that The Dark Tower will be released in 2013 and is directed by Ron Howard. What problems are there with this? I am anxiously awaiting this so I hope that everything goes smoothly. I think Javier Bardem is a great choice for Roland. Kind of hoping that this becomes like a Lord of the Rings or dare I say it (Harry Potter  ) where each novel gets it's own movie. I think it is just a fantastic series of books. I plan on re-reading them since I read the first 4 back in the 90's and read 4-7 when they came out in the mid 2000's.
Universal just dropped it because of the risk. The movie wouldn't appeal to a younger crowd like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter do. I mean, people get raped by demons.. Lets hope a tv or mini series does it justice.
To be honest, I'm happy that Universal dropped it. I think they would have absolutely RUINED it. I also don't think it's unfilmable. Look at Game of Thrones - I said it before and I think the HBO treatment would be perfect for Dark Tower. Now would be the time to capitalize on it too especially because of that Cowboys and Aliens movie. When I saw that trailer I thought..hmm... the wild west goes supernatural, where have I heard of that before?!

I agree with you. I think HBO would be great. You could make a book last 12-13 episodes no problem. Except Part 3 and 4 which would have to cut some stuff out due to how lengthy and detailed they are. Also, would King play himself in the series or would he hire an actor? He's probably to old and a little uneasy re-creating getting hit by that car again.

Yep, and HBO could be true to everything - no PG-13 rating needed! I would love to see how they could do Blaine. As for King, I've always thought Peter Gallagher was his brother from another mother:

Sorry to drag a thread back from a long time ago, but I did a search and this came up. I just finished the series for the second time (third time for books 1-4 as I re-read them when Book 5 came out). Really enjoyed it again and there was a lot from books 5-7 I had forgotten.

What were everyone's thoughts on the movie?
Haven't watched it yet, but from what I've gathered it's about the next time around after the books. I could be wrong. It's hard to mash up 7 novels into one movie, so my hopes aren't high.
It's not great, especially if you are a big fan of the books. They took all the soul out of it. It's a bummer because Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings have shown how a fantasy epic like these can be handled well on the screen. It was a mildly entertaining action movie, but even that feeling might be because I went in wanting to give it a chance after hearing so many bad reviews of it. The kid who played Jake was really good. The good thing was it got me to read the series again, which not perfect (still not a fan of King being a character), but there is way more that I like in the series than I don't like.

I think I remember HBO declining doing the DT series because they had Westworld in the works for a long time. Again, I could be wrong. I love Westworld, but would have been cool to see the Dark Tower played out long form.

Maybe they just bit off too much. It was too ambitious. Might be better just to fund one film and see how it does.

"According to Stephen King, as of October 2017, the tv series will be a complete reboot and not connected to the film adaptation. "
This would be a good move, but I think they should let more time pass before they do a complete reboot to get the bad taste out of everyone's mouth.
