merkinball - totally agree. I was really disappointed with that, but I did like Book 7 very much.

Pearljamaholic - yes, JJ Abrams is the guy that did Lost. King has mentioned before how much he likes that show and respects him. He is currently working on the Star Trek reboot but maybe after that . . .

Except the ending of the 7th (last) book. It took a while to get what was Kings intent there, I doubt that would pay off well in a movie. And, no offense to King, but they'd have to up Flagg's death. That was one of the more disappointing aspects of the book.

    SPOILER****************************************************

I greatly enjoyed how the book ended. The whole...finishing as it started...i just enjoy that. Add the fact that was his last go around...I thought it was satisfying.

I've put a lot of thought into who would play Roland in a movie, and the closest person I can think of is this guy:

    http://www.carlosbernard.com/

I think his raspy voice would be great, and he looks pretty rugged when beat up.

Ed Norton as Eddie Dean would be cool.

Yeah, I agree. I thought the ending was great. But, I don't know how that would play out in a movie. I can imagine a theater full of people going 'wtf?'. It's not the typical ending of a hollywood blockbuster.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

yeah, but they kept the end of The Mist like the book and it wasn't necessarily a nice, clean Hollywood ending

First three books are brilliant. I thought Wizard and Glass was okay but after reading all of the books, the backstory isn't really that important - so that's like, what, 500+ pages of interesting but ultimately unnecessary stuff? :p. Wolves of the Calla was great but the last two were a bit crap.

100 pages into book IV. Most people say that it's the best, but I am not really excited about the thought of 500 pages of backstory. Someone psych me up for this.

If you are really into the overall story, the backstory provides some fascinating insights in that world and Roland's background. I found the backstory far more interesting than the rest of W&G and a nice break.

The whole idea of this feudal society in a post apocalyptic world with knights (gunslingers) and royalty, etc. that King created amazes me. And it is a really good adventure story too, complete with young disguised gunslingers on their first covert mission, a conspiracy, corruption, a powerfull object everyone is after, romance, fallen gunslingers for hire. I don't know, the whole thing is just great. I think King was on top of his game here.

W&G is probably the one that is most readily adaptable to film, which I guess is why it was chosen to kick off the comic book series.

I thought there were a lot of parallels to Star Wars too. Moreso in W&G than the other books. The gunslingers are like Jedi Knights - supurb skills, unique weapons, highly trained from childhood, emissaries for the ruling class - struggling to hold onto civilization in the face of oncoming darkness. Ultimately complancency and betrayal leads to their downfall. This was before the Star Wars prequels came out but I couldn't help thinking about when readind W&G.

absolutly, take the trip down the path NothingSound, it was the most moving part of the story and gave you a greater appreciation of Roland for the rest of the book

a gold medal to the person who started this thread!! why didnt someone think of it sooner

halley barry would make a great susannah dean
johnny depp as eddie if he got roughed up a bit

roland?? god who knows ... i cant think of anyone right now that would really suit him - everyone is coming up with the Eastwood parallel because King mentioned it himself, but its not a possible to do

jake? to be honest i often visialise him as the kid from the sixth sence when im reading

and i love the way so many of King's books have little links back to this series - some obvious, some very subtle ... its like the dark tower story has consumed his whole subconscious being ...

I remember reading in the prologue of Insomnia that King said he's probably written more about the dark tower than he's actually written of the dark tower.

And as for characters...I want to see Oy.

"The Mist" as a short story didn't really have an ending. It just left the last few people in the SUV driving to an unsure future. It was very open ended. The movie ending left nothing to the imagination, and the shock of what they did turned it into one of my favorite King adaptations ever. I had better not say anymore to anyone that hasn't seen it, or apparently Stephen King himself will hang me!

    http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Stephen-King-Loves-The-Mist-s-New-Ending-6909.html

I do agree though, that generally only Dark Tower fans would appreciate the current ending if it was made into a movie. The general moviegoer would want something more flashy.

I had read loads of King ... especially in my teenage years ... but none of The Dark Tower series.

Managed to pick up all 7 books - new - for £18 ($35) on ebay so am a little over halfway through book 1 ... so will be a while before I have much to add to this thread :D

i dont know..... it took me 3 days to read book 3. when i started the first one i read about the first half in a week, then the second half in a day.

its not possible, but im afraid of reading this book in a day, but i want it to last. gonna try to finish book 4 in 2 weeks, not sooner...

i could see her play susan if they ever do a mini-series, movie.

    http://www.newstoob.com/media/images/2007/11/hayden-panettiere-bikini-mens-vogue-02.jpg

    SPOILERS!!!

i was doing pretty good milking the story for time but once the murders happened and all i couldnt put it down. i dont think susan's death was as sad as when roland told alain and cuthbert that he wants the tower over her. he had a glimpse of the tower from an evil magic item and just like that he throws everything that could be away.....but i guess it wouldnt have mattered if he decided the other way. i found the whole thing with his mother pretty sad too. the whole thing where he didnt wave back when they were riding out. he pretty much disowns his mom. roland pretty much sticks to his morals over everything.

that whole back story pretty much proved roland was always one tough cookie.

is the dude jonas talked to in the black robe the same guy roland chased across the deserts in book one?

not to get off topic, but since it's a stephen king thread: i've been going pretty much full bore on reading and re-reading king novels since february of this year. i used to read king all the time, but completely dropped reading as a hobby about 14 or 15 years ago. now it's back and uncontrollable for me. i went to the masonic temple this weekend because they had a used book sale going on. i picked up 9 king novels in paperback for $2.25. i added up the prices on the spines and if i had bought them all brand new, it would have been just over $60.

looking forward to tomorrow, duma key comes out in paperback. i've been dying to read it, but i don't want to ruin my hardcover, plus a paperback is so much easier to carry around. he's also got a new collection of short stories coming out november 11th called just after sunset.

oh, and if anyone has a copy of 'the bachman books' or 'rage' that they're willing to part with, let me know how much you want for it. my copy of the bachman books was destroyed during a move about 10 years ago.

I don't think there are any. Although 19 comes up a lot. And the "life is a wheel" theory comes up at least once.

BetterThanYou - I've been meaning to re-read several of his earlier books too. Take Cujo for example. You know that book is just one long angry rant. There aren't even any chapters. King claims he doesn't even remember writing it because it came pouring out of a coke and booze fueled daze. His earlier stuff like Cujo and Pet Sematary are so angry and full of dispair and misery. Nothing like the way he writes not. Not sure if it is better, but the earlier stuff is definitely more raw and intense.

i just read cujo for the first time about 3 months ago. the whole chapterless concept is different, but he pulls it off well. he did the same thing with delores claiborne, the whole book read like it was a police report (imo).

i've talked with a few people on the stephen king message board about duma key and they all said the same thing: it's a great read, probably one of his best. then again, it was a stephen king message board. that's like asking people around here if they like pearl jam. can't wait for tomorrow, though. as soon as i get the kids on the bus, i'm heading for the bookstore. i want to start reading it before i come in to work.

as far as the dark tower series goes...i tried reading the gunslinger when it came out, but just couldn't get into it so i took a complete pass on the DT series. but now that i'm back into the novels, i'm going to try it again, and i'm sure i'll have more success with it the second time around. i had the same problem with the tommyknockers the first time i read it...didn't really care for it. but i re-read it this summer and completely fell in love with it, at the same time kicking myself for not enjoying it the first time around.

This was a fantastic series and it was hard for me to put down. I'm concerned about how it will translate to film. Hopefully the producers give it everything it needs and not do it half-assed.
