Art is anything that makes one proud to be human

quote by Amiri Baraka, while it expresses the importance of art, I think it also understates it as well.

Art(music, books, film) can also make one sick to the stomach, make you cry, make you pissed off, haunt you etc... I dont think those emotions necessarily correlate with being proud of being human

I don't like that quote at all... Like you said, it leaves out a lot of things that art is, and by definition includes things that aren't.

Being human includes being sick to our stomachs; crying; being furious/frustrated, etc.

All of these aspects of our humanity are glorious, as art knows and as art is known to awaken us to.

i think the word that throws that quote off is 'proud'. a lot of art reminds us of hte human condition, both good and bad...not sure how pride works into it though

    indeed.
    art is subjective.
    and at the simplist....

    art IS.
    period.

art is the full gamut of human emotion, documentation and expression. it can take so many forms, be utterly beautiful and horrifically ugly. it's 'definition' will probably be debated ad infinitum. thus, 'art is'.....encompasses it all, even if one argues 'what is' art or not. why worry about labels? focus on content, both good and bad and everything inbetween.....enjoy, be shocked and appalled, amazed and mesmerized.......yea, make me SEE...FEEL....THINK....QUESTION. :)
    Stay with me...
    Let's just breathe...

I am myself like you somehow

exactly. i would have said all that but the codeine is kicking in lol :o haha how is your ankle by the way!?

but yeah, the pride thing in that quote is odd. god knows there's art out there that does qualify as art, yet doesn't make me proud to be a human

True, art IS. The word art itself is derived from the verb to be. For this very reason.

All those things DO make me proud to be human. They aren't necessarily admirable attributes but they show that we are complex, multi-faceted beings with flaws. That's all I expect from art.

Anything that can sustain a discussion about whether or not it is or is not IS DEFINITELY art :)

How one can be proud to be a human is beyond my comprehension. Human behaviour can bring a lump to my throat or sicken me, doesn't alter how I view my self as a human because I don't.

I said they transcend humanity. Through art/Truth, we can go beyond our meager humble little selves.

Besides, saying without humans art and Truth do not exist is definitely debatable.

    okay so debate it.

i know you said transcends, angelica. however it is man that creates art. it is man who seeks truth. without man who is left to do either. one can not transcend that which does not exist. especially if one does not exist himself.

"The Theory of Forms typically refers to Plato's belief that the material world as it seems to us is not the real world, but only a shadow of the real world"

My understanding of transcendence is having awakened moments/experience of ourselves beyond our sensory-based 3-dimensional selves. Art can serve the purpose of being the vehicle to take us there -- beyond our small-mindedness, to seeing the limitless horizons all around us.

And at the same time, I've read of numerous artist/writers, etc. who speak of the form/inspiration already existing, and that they were mere vehicles in the physical manifestation of such art. I experience this writing my book; as Michelangelo saw the angel in the marble and set it free.

absolutely. there's stuff out htere that i know intellectually is classified as art, and it is art, but doesn't have anything my heart can hang on to. something for everybody which is good

chadwick when i hear sleight of hand (the term, not hte kickass song) i think of someone trying to pull the wool over my eyes. sometimes the excess verbage of what art is/isn't is just that....smoke and mirrors. it's like just let me feel the fucking thing and shut up lol
