Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
Wilder was good, but Depp was brilliant! Depp added a quality that felt unnerving at times, like you wouldn't trust your child alone with him. It was never said or explored, but it was there in his subtle looks and it creeped me out.
Like someone said, Wonka in the book is a reclusive, eccentric and ever-so-slightly creepy character and i think Depp nailed it perfectly.
"This town deserves a better class of criminal... and I'm gonna give it to them."
As a huge fan of all things Dahl I prefer the new film as it's sooooo much closer to the book.
I really don't like the original.
Exactly.
And for the record, Depp did say in an interview that Michael Jackson was a small inspiration for the role.

My vote goes to Wilder by a longshot. Depp kinda weirded me out in that role. Nowhere in the book does it say that Wonka had a base case of gender identity disorder.
I agree with you. Gene Wilder did a better job. That was the one part that I didn't like Johnny Depp in. Usually is is stellar in every part.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

couldn't agree more. I usually think johnny depp is great in everything, but i think he killed this role.
I'm a huge gene wilder fan so it would be hard for anyone to top his performance, but depp played him so weird and creepy. and don't get me started on the oompa loompas(or in this case oompa loompa). Tim Burton let me down big time on this one.
Leave here now with your head hung in shame!!!!
The original was my favourite movie ever, for years. Wilder was magnificent, the whole film was magnificent.
Really....what is dave thinking being with someone like that.
I couldn't even get through the movie.
Horrid.
Gene Wilder was the perfect Willy Wonka.

I'll defend Wilder and the original till my last breath is drawn!!!!!
Depp is okay, a bit over rated....and that remake was just plain awful!
btw i never associated willie wonka with charlie and the chocolate factory....although i saw the wilder movie first, i read the book and discovered the difference
i enjoy willie wonka as it's own entity....and wilder is a badass!

See I read the book first at about 5 or 6 years old and then got excited to see the film ... and then :( ... it just wasn't as good as the book.
When I saw the second film it just seem darker ... like the book.
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?
I have seen Wilder's version at least 200 times... I couldn't even make it through the new one, it was just too bad.
This is like asking who would be a better frontman for Pearl Jam, Ed or Scott Stapp.
But I did think that the remake was closer to the book than the original. In fact, the first 20 minutes or so of the remake were so awesome, until Micheal Jackson---I mean Johnny Depp made his appearance. Creepy doesn't begin to describe him. He ruined an otherwise awesome remake for me.

I think a majority of people here favor the first because they grew up with it. I don't blame them. Honestly, I don't seen any break through performances here from Gene Wilder. Just a cheesy 70s kids movie.. I still really want to see Depp's version.
I have seen Wilder's version at least 200 times...
And there lies your problem.. I bet 199 of those times were before the age of 12. The first one is part of your childhood, so you're being a little biased.
Had I watched the first one for the first time in my 20s, I wouldn't have made it through the first 10 minutes.. I think I can bear a Tim Burton movie.

yeah well if Wilder didn't have a case of gender identity disorder well who did?...~
