As a huge fan of all things Dahl I prefer the new film as it's sooooo much closer to the book.

I really don't like the original.
So are we strangers now? Like rock and roll and the radio?

I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, just different.
But Depp was so much more like the character I imagined from the book.
    Astoria 20/04/06, Leeds 25/08/06, Prague 22/09/06, Wembley 18/06/07,
    Dusseldorf 21/06/07, Manchester 17/08/09, London 18/08/09, LA 06/10/09, LA 07/10/09.

Ain't gonna be any middle anymore.

I haven't seen the Depp version, but I can't stand the fucker, so Wilder wins by default.

I prefer to splice the two films together. A little Johnny, a little Genie... it's like the Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz, swears.

Who's ever heard of a snozberry (sp?)... you know, it's in the original, I hope they didn't take it out of the Burton version, that would be sad...

Does dark chocolate come with a weird sinister look only seen on madmen? would have to try that...

Wilder was good, but Depp was brilliant! Depp added a quality that felt unnerving at times, like you wouldn't trust your child alone with him. It was never said or explored, but it was there in his subtle looks and it creeped me out.

Like someone said, Wonka in the book is a reclusive, eccentric and ever-so-slightly creepy character and i think Depp nailed it perfectly.

    Exactly.

And for the record, Depp did say in an interview that Michael Jackson was a small inspiration for the role.

My vote goes to Wilder by a longshot. Depp kinda weirded me out in that role. Nowhere in the book does it say that Wonka had a base case of gender identity disorder.
I agree with you. Gene Wilder did a better job. That was the one part that I didn't like Johnny Depp in. Usually is is stellar in every part.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

couldn't agree more. I usually think johnny depp is great in everything, but i think he killed this role.
I'm a huge gene wilder fan so it would be hard for anyone to top his performance, but depp played him so weird and creepy. and don't get me started on the oompa loompas(or in this case oompa loompa). Tim Burton let me down big time on this one.

I just asked my 5 year old which one was the better Wonka and she said "The blonde one."

    So there you have it...
I really screwed that up. I really Schruted it.
