Gene Wilder vs. Johnny Depp as Wonka

My vote goes to Wilder by a longshot. Depp kinda weirded me out in that role. Nowhere in the book does it say that Wonka had a base case of gender identity disorder.

Depp's great but he never had a chance with that role. it couldn't be done. sometimes, there's only one.

Me, too! Johnny Depp was really good in the role, but I got the feeling he just might touch one of the kids if left alone with them... ;)
I still want you all to "take care"--I am just damn tired of typing it.

I love both actors' versions, but to me, Depp's interpretation was closer to what I remember from the book - wonka really was a reclusive, odd individual.

  • Wilder, definitely. He just defined the role. But I feel sorry for Depp, because he tried hard to make Wonka his own, but it just sorta fell flat. And it was kinda too much of the "Depp as weird character" routine.
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.

Wilder for sure! Depp had that Michael Jackson kinda thing going on that really creeped me out.

Depp is one of my favs, but that role was made for Wilder. He was quite brilliant in the role.

That's the greatest comparison ever. I'm a HUGE Jordan/Bulls fan.
I'll be stealing that now, thank you.

    Not even close... Gene Wilder.

I was never a really big fan of the original.. still have to see the remake to comment..

Gene Wilder was always one of my favorite comedic actors. He had a touch of sadness in his eyes that made his humor that much better. So charismatic, so spontaneous, so underrated, in my opinion.

As a huge fan of all things Dahl I prefer the new film as it's sooooo much closer to the book.

I really don't like the original.

I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, just different.
But Depp was so much more like the character I imagined from the book.

I haven't seen the Depp version, but I can't stand the fucker, so Wilder wins by default.

I prefer to splice the two films together. A little Johnny, a little Genie... it's like the Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz, swears.

Who's ever heard of a snozberry (sp?)... you know, it's in the original, I hope they didn't take it out of the Burton version, that would be sad...

Does dark chocolate come with a weird sinister look only seen on madmen? would have to try that...
