    Exactly.

And for the record, Depp did say in an interview that Michael Jackson was a small inspiration for the role.

Oh my god, now it's even creepier

I'll defend Wilder and the original till my last breath is drawn!!!!!
Depp is okay, a bit over rated....and that remake was just plain awful!

See I read the book first at about 5 or 6 years old and then got excited to see the film ... and then :( ... it just wasn't as good as the book.

When I saw the second film it just seem darker ... like the book.

I have seen Wilder's version at least 200 times... I couldn't even make it through the new one, it was just too bad.
This is like asking who would be a better frontman for Pearl Jam, Ed or Scott Stapp.
  • Wilder for sure.

But I did think that the remake was closer to the book than the original. In fact, the first 20 minutes or so of the remake were so awesome, until Micheal Jackson---I mean Johnny Depp made his appearance. Creepy doesn't begin to describe him. He ruined an otherwise awesome remake for me.

Thumbs up to the people who played the devil's advocate in this one. The bulk of the responses were certainly not in their corner.

On the same token, I feel I must cast a suspicious eye upon said thread participants, however.

Not on the debate of Wilder vs. Depp but man did those songs suck in the remake or what?

    The original soundtrack... a "10"

    The remake soundtrack... a "1"

I think a majority of people here favor the first because they grew up with it. I don't blame them. Honestly, I don't seen any break through performances here from Gene Wilder. Just a cheesy 70s kids movie.. I still really want to see Depp's version.

And there lies your problem.. I bet 199 of those times were before the age of 12. The first one is part of your childhood, so you're being a little biased.

Had I watched the first one for the first time in my 20s, I wouldn't have made it through the first 10 minutes.. I think I can bear a Tim Burton movie.

My vote goes to Wilder by a longshot. Depp kinda weirded me out in that role. Nowhere in the book does it say that Wonka had a base case of gender identity disorder.

yeah well if Wilder didn't have a case of gender identity disorder well who did?...~
