While tragic, this is hardly surprising.

That's the problem. It is not surprising. This Black Friday mob mentality caused by stores putting extremely low inventory items on sale to cause this behavior should be outlawed. OR at the very least they need to control how people are allowed in.

Given numbers to check out with. One item each. Check out would take a while, but to open the doors with way too many slack jawed jack offs fighting for position is ridiculous.

People should just stay home and log on, even if you spend a few extra bux to ship something, the deals are about the same
  • What a pathetic reality.

This the lower 10% of society that has no clue who, or what the hell they are, or what anything else is around them.

It's the mentality of an animal in a human form. A dog would be more intelligent, or about the same.
Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,
and reveling in it's loyalty. It's made by forming coalitions
over specific principles, goals, and policies.

No, it doesn't. The vast majority of shoppers at this mall are black, which causes people all over Nassau County to form pre-conceptions about it. The mall is just as safe as Roosevelt Field or any other mall.

As a matter of fact, it's Sunrise Mall in Massapequa that DOES have a track record of violent incidents throughout the year (and even then it's limited to only a few isolated incidents).

Oh, I do want to add that when I got this email alert from Newsday, I was digusted. This is a horrible thing and, as others have said in this thread, unfortunately not surprising at this point. :( Even worse, the Newsday article opens with the report about this trampling and then goes into 2 and a half pages about the great bargains people are finding! Real nice.

    seriously, this is disgusting.

it's not like someone pulled out a gun and shot the guy, which i'm sure happened somewhere....but more than one person stomped on the guy.

    Esther's here and she's sick?

hi Esther, now we are all going to be sick, thanks

Had there been someone in the crowd who saw and gave a shit and stopped to help, guess what would have happened to them...

maybe it's better today, but I know this mall used to be really bad. I remember a shooting in the movie theater on Christmas Day years ago, the day Godfather 3 came out. I live close to the former South Shore Mall (it's got a corporate name now) and that's no picnic either. A few years a go, a woman got stabbed because she had a red shirt on, some kid had to stab anyone in a red shirt to get into a gang. Then there's Smith Haven mall, Long Island's goth headquarters. I think I'd rather take my chances with the gangs

    Fucking moronic consumerist pigs.

Yep, it seems like every year when I watch the evening news on this day, there is always a story like this. Quite sad.
  • that poor guy! so those shoppers go and get their cheap TVs that'll probably be obsolete in 6 months. and all the other crap that was made in china in some sweatshop....to just end up at the bottom of a closet somewhere or a landfill.

meanwhile the family and friends of this guy will have to deal with this loss for the rest of their lives.

    people disgust me.

    I have never been there.
I just read somewhere that someone said that if you want to shop all day and then get mugged on your way to your car, then this is the place for you.
And this place has a police station in the mall!
    Wtf?
Yet another reason why everyone is getting scrapbooks and booze for the holiday...No one, I mean NO ONE fights at the liquor store.
    Let's get it together everyone.
Be nice to each other for crying out loud.
Let someone out in traffic, say hi to Santa Claus, give some change to the Salvation Army. That is what the holidays should be about...not this tragedy.
    I can't even stand this. :(
Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome

Not only in America... I've heard of stuff like that happening here... don't think anyone's been killed YET... but that's pure luck.

Not much different than what happened at The WHO concert several years ago in Cincinatti where it was 9 people died from being trampled. This could have been avoided.

yeah all for what to save a few $$$ people are totally nuts ...
jesus greets me looks just like me ....
  • i was at target on the other side of the mall shortly after this. i couldn't understand the enormous crowd (much bigger than expected even with black friday)...and then i heard this story. seems that the walmart crowd took their shopping to target. i don't know about you, but if i was witness to something like this, i'd go home after. who wants to shop after such a tragedy.

whoever said "it wasn't an 80 year old greeter,"--- would that make it "better" in your eyes?? this is disgusting no matter what.

also, i know this mall has a reputation but you guys are making it out to be much worse than it is. as far as distance, i live right in the middle of this mall (green acres) and roosevelt field. and sometimes i actually feel safter at greenacres. it is not "year round brawls" or anything like that. it does have its share of occurences, true... lots of car theft (from what is said, most are insurance jobs though) ..possibly slightly more than some malls but no more than most...in this area...

I'm pretty sure that was meant in that a 34 year old male is in much better physical condition than an 80 year old greeter...i.e. knocked down and trampled easier, hinting at the verocity and carelessness of the crowd, not that it was 'better'. Nice interpretation though.
