I recently read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, and let me tell ya, that fucking book will melt your soul. "Dark" doesn;t even come close to describing it. But I guess it's got a redemptive ending. It just wasn't the best book for me to read while suffering from a wee bit of postpartum depression! Jeesh...
I'm planning to read "Into the Wild" before the film comes out in September. I read the interview with the family and with Sean Penn in Outside magazine. Looks like they stayed obsessively close to reality. Should be an excellent movie.
"Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Obama."
"Obama's main opponent in this election on November 4th (was) not John McCain, it (was) ignorance."~Michael Moore
"i'm feeling kinda righteous right now. with my badass motherfuckin' ukulele!"
~ed, 8/7
To recover from "The Road", I then read "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert, and it was WONDERFUL. It's her chronicle of traveling to Italy (eat), India (pray) and Indonesia (love), where she sunk herself into each of those activities with gusto. A fantastic, funny, warm, inspiring book. I loved it.

My sister likes to read kind of depressing books when she is depressed, like Grapes of Wrath. She says it somehow makes her feel better....
So I'll just lie down and wait for the dream Where I'm not ugly and you're lookin' at me
Reading her books is a reason to learn to read. Man, I haven't read this type of story telling mastery in a while. Even the new Michael Ondaatje isn't up to this level. It's like filling a craving. Wonderful! I'm about 50 pages in or so, but I'm loving the writing.

Anderson Cooper's autobiography...not sure the title, don't have it in front of me.
I cannot take Anderson Cooper seriously because he hosted that teen news program on Channel 1 that was piped into my high school. If only he knew how much he was mocked in my all boys Catholic high school. How is the book though?
I just finished a couple of Chuck Klosterman books - "IV" and "Killing Yourself to Live: 85% of a True Story". I like his writing style and random pop culture references. Both were quick reads.
I'm going to check out Under the Banner of Heaven next like you suggested AC.

I went to the high school formerly known as St. John Neumann. Still can't believe it closed and got torn down.
Just finished "Sharp Objects" and "Into the Wild". "Sharp Objects" is really creepy with a nice twist at the end. "Into the Wild" is one of the best books I have read in awhile. I was fascinated with the whole story from the mystery of what happened to him to his parents to the people he met on his travels. From the previews, the movie looks really similiar and I read an article in "Outside" that said the family wouldn't let the movie get made unless it was faithful to the true story so it should be really good.

It's interesting so far...just started it though. He's actually a really good writer so it should be an easy read.
A sidenote on UtBoH. Some parts get a little slow...discussing USA/Mormon history...power-through those parts.

I probably won't mind that. I'm a history and trivia buff. I was fascinated to learn that Mormons hold one of my archenemies - the seagull - in high regard when I was out in Salt Lake a few years ago so I should be ok.

I *HATE* seagulls. They used to dive-bomb us at lunch in high school (my school was near the ocean).

Just picked up Into the Wild, wanted read it before the movie came out
Movie looks great from the trailer
In the article I read it said that "Into the Wild" is taught in schools. He's just plain making bank!
Yeah, I saw that too...in Outside magazine?? Great article!! But, yeah...I've been a fan of his since Into Thin Air came out. My all-time favorite author! I'm stoked for his success.
P.S. If I was a teacher I'd definitely use Into the Wild (and Into Thin Air) as books for my class.
P.P.S. Yup, that's right...Krakauer also has a book called Into Thin Air. Get it..."Thin Air"?!

Yeah it was interesting to see his parents thoughts. One of the things that made the book so interesting was that I went back and forth on how I felt about him. I would admire him for his bravery and wanting to really experience life and then I would hate him for not keeping in contact with his parents.

I was pissed at him for alot of the book. He made so many stupid choices and didn't do his research...could've saved his life.
