The title story features a man who drinks because of the pain. He drinks because of the squeaky things. He drinks because the moon makes terrible sounds. On a night by the sea, a young girl will show him how to escape the moon and all the other horrors eating him from the inside. The shower-inducing concluding tale,"The Sex Beast of Scurvy Island," is a gory and bizarre horror comedy featuring a group of young pornographers called upon to find and bring to justice the man or creature who has been impregnating all the prostitutes of a tropical island. This collection also features "The Man With the Face Like a Bruise" and "The Photographer."
A pocket guide to the twenty-three most painful things in life, written by the most well-adjusted man in the universe.
Does it make you sad to be alive?
Boo-hoo. You're living all wrong.
My name is Andersen Prunty. I'm happiest while napping. I am a man with tennis shoes. They get older every time I put them on. This is how I deal with the pain of being alive. Now is our chance to deal with our pain together. You'll thank me later.

It’s been a few weeks since Benson returned to his parents’ home in the idyllic gated community of Grand Acres. He hasn’t seen them since. Ever since locking himself in the house with his supply of junk food and pot, he hasn’t seen much of anyone. When he’s finally coerced from the house and joins an ominous neighborhood group know as the Brown Shirts, Benson realizes things in Grand Acres aren’t nearly as tranquil as he thought. Even worse, there’s a samurai on the loose who is settling grudges in very violent ways.

I will add to my list, might not be for most but this type of quick read, laugh out loud stuff is fun for me.
Tomorrow, I'm going to dip into my pile of "books I should have already read" and read this:
My #1 book on that same list you have is "Grapes of Wrath." When I told my cousin I never read it before, he said, "You're an English major and haven't read 'Grapes of Wrath?'" Hopefully I can get to "The Sun Also Rises" once the semester ends, but Grapes is going to be the first book I read once the semester ends.
I'm majored in English, too, and still haven't read Grapes either ... :fp:
Just finished Owen Laukkanen's The Professionals, good book, nice start to a series, didn't realize it was going to turn into a series when I started it. I like how the investigators are not the focus of the story, the criminals actually are, even found myself rooting for them by the end, even though I knew they were wrong. Sort of like Lehane's The Town.
Just started Brian McGilloway's The Rising. It's a series based along the Borderlands of Ireland with Inspector Devlin as the key character. I've liked the previous stories and am enjoying this one so far. If you are into Irish Noir I would recommend checking it out.

I will Only a few chapters in...but it's interesting because Burroughs & Kerouac write alternating chapters from two different characters' point of view..

Had this one in my pile for a long time and wanted to get to it before the mini-series starts. Used to be an SK freak but relaxed some on him. This started off pretty strong:

That is very encouraging, thanks! I loved his earlier stuff. I have to give props to 11/22/63, I felt that was his best work in a while. Hopefully this will be just as good or better.
Been reading the Autumn series by David Moody on and off. About halfway through the third book in a series of six, and I hope to stick with it till the end this time around.

I still need to get the 2nd book in the Hater series... This is one book where the cover would push me towards a kindle... I might get listed on the watch list by our company security while reading that in the cafeteria!
Going old school with my next book... Starting Ed McBain's "Cop Hater" from the 87th Precinct series... This will be a different series for me as their are multiple main characters throughout the series and the city it is based in is completely made up by the author. Hoping I find the story as interesting as the concept.

I'd love to read those too. I really enjoyed his writing style - academic but engaging and entertaining. He showed incredible restraint at times, but didn't shy away from the grotty depths of Durst and Woodstock '99 (WTFF?!). EV came out with clean hands and Thom Yorke came out beautifully . Cate, Please PM me the details of your spare copy of 'Nietzsche, Leave Those Kids Alone' - thanks!
Honestly the afterword was more intriguing than the actual book. It was cool that the book was written by 2 different perspectives, but it was just very "matter of factly" written....the true story that the book is based on and why it wasn't published until relatively recently is kind of crazy. I also tried to remember that the book was basically the first work for either Burroughs or Kerouac.
not sure how much reading I'll get to do this weekend...but this is up next...
The story of how, in the darkest days of the Second World War, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met over Christmas in Washington and launched their grand strategy to defeat the Axis powers.
By Christmas Eve, 1941, the war could hardly have been worse for Britain or the United States. Barely three weeks earlier the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor and a week before Christmas the Italian navy penetrated Alexandria harbour in Egypt and sank the British battleships Queen Elizabeth and Valiant.
The full story of how Churchill and Roosevelt spent three weeks charting the future strategy of the Allies has now been pieced together for the first time. One Christmas in Washington shows how two very different nations learned to work together and how two super-egos were joined by a common purpose - to win the war.
