It appears to only affect people who have been exposed to a great deal of electro magnetism which is why Farraday was worried about himself.
Rousseau's crew were scientists and probably more susceptible than the passengers of 815. But she was pregnant at the time of the shipwreck so maybe that is why it never affected her.
Also, maybe that is why Ethan gave the magic drink for Juliet to take when she first came to the island. Because she probably was exposed to a bunch of electromagnetism in her research before the island. Maybe the Others know of this property and that's why Ben, Alpert and Ethan can go back and forth from the island.
And maybe that's why that girl drowned while swimming in season 1. Maybe she just never came back in time.

I don't know if Faraday's (or Penny's, for that matter) memory will begin to alter to include new events in the past (was it a coincidence that Penny was home with the same phone number on Christmas Eve or did she remember their encounter?), but when Faraday and Desmond met on the island, that was the first time they had met, so there wouldn't be any familiarity, at the time. The past hadn't changed until after this meeting. Also, as someone mentioned, time travel is difficult to pull off on tv and movies, so there will be inconsistencies.
Desmond did meet Faraday for the "first" time on the island... Desmond (IMO) is jumping from time to time (1996 to 2004 or the near future as with Charlie's death visions) so when something happens to Desmond either in 1996 or 2004, it is happening for the first time. So there would be no memory or continuity error. This is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. Please remove it.

desmond should have just gone to the clock tower at 10:04 with his flux capacitor and delorean....problem solved.
was anyone else waiting for desmond to die in that scene at the end with penny...it was just too good and emotional...i thought for sure they were setting us up to have him collapse!
great episode. desmond is such a good, believable actor...my heart was breaking for him.0 -

P.S. Comic books are great for one's education. It is also important to remember how many staff members of the Lost production team also work in the comic book field. All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. Couple random thoughts ...
1. Faraday (like desmond) is getting glimpses of the future ... i got this from the card game ... kind of like his rat knowing the maze before it was taught to him.
2. what if some of the flashbacks we have seen are directly related to island experiences. for example, what if when hurley was in the institution and the guy who kept on repeating the numbers (4,8,15, 16, 23, 42) was in his subconsious repeating numbers he learned while on the island.
3. and i do not think we are talking time travel as we know it - matter/body is not being passed thru time - but rather the transfer of knowledge/ideas. desmond wrote the numbers on his hand ... the didn;t travel thru time, but he was able to remember them.I don't want to be hostile. I don't want to be dismal. But I don't want to rot in an apathetic existance either.0 -

My mind is still a jumble and I can't get a good grasp on how this stuff could work but....... as to the electromagnetism and how it affects the time travel/ sickness, maybe punching the numbers in had something to do with controlling it or regulating it. Then when Locke failed to punch in the numbers there was this big surge. However, I don't know how Desmond's turning the key did anything since the surge seemed to have happened anyway. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats its animals. i know the tsunami has also been mentioned before, but they confirmed the date last night... so we now know it's supposed to hit in two days. wonder if anything will be made of that.0

I agree with the way you describe Penny as "pretty in a not pretty way." I actually like her less after seeing the actress on "Tell Me You Love Me", but that might be just because I don't like the show."We're fixed good, lamp-wise."0 -

I would suspect that it will be incorporated in the next episode or two... especially since some of the story is occuring on the freighter in the "real world" as well as on the island. My guess is that something happens on the island which may be a trigger for the tsunami or the tsunami will happen but not affect the island at all. This is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. I knew I recognized her from somewhere. I only saw an episode of Tell Me You Love Me, but from what I saw, she was a very.....umm...."hands on" character.
Last night's episode was interesting to say the least. Too much for me to get my mind around. Thank goodness for this thread and all the great observations that people make. For instance, great stuff in harrymanback's post below:harrymanback wrote:Couple random thoughts ...

OK, somebody explain Lost to me. I just watched the first episode through the ABC website. It was ok, the content was good, but the actors aren't convincing me. I've been meaning to watch this show for years, because I like this kind of stuff, but never got around to it. I've even heard to relates to Stephen King's The Dark Tower, which I'm a big fan of..
My question right now, after seeing the first episode, they are all stuck on this island.. how are they still "lost" in later episodes when they are back in society??? Is that just flashbacks? I caught a little of the most recent episode the other day and am a little confused..0 -

It's not called 'Lost' because they are lost. It's called 'Lost' because the viewers are lost. Lol, that's not true, but it's not far off.. Honestly it would be EXTREMELY hard to start watching this series in the middle of a season.. Which is perplexing because it's still getting HUGE ratings and proably not that many new viewers.
Only in the most recent season (and the season 3 finale) did they start the flash-forwards to the future. The pilot episode is one of the most amazing pilot episodes in the history of TV (IMO), and if you weren't hooked with that well then maybe it's not the show for you.
In summary:
Season 1 is how they got to the island, and what the encounter when they're there.. it's not just a deserted island, something is strange.
Season 2 is about the hatch, and accompanying hatches and about the origins of the island.
Season 3 revolves around "the others" who are the original inhabitants of the island.
Season 4 so far is about "the Oceanic 6" and their journey off of the island.
Season 5 will probably be about how or why they need to get back to the island.
Season 6 will wrap everything up. (this is the final season scheduled).
And if you're confused by a lot of stuff in the early seasons, the writers and producers have stated that everything is going to come together at the end of the series. Mainly they talked about the male and female bodies they found in a cave in season 1 that were never explained, but they will be (again according to the writers/producers). Many speculate that the female is Amelia Earhart and the male is someone famous for disappearing too (his name eludes me atm).
Either way, 'Lost' has been packed full of drama, romance, action and a great story since it's conception. It's possibly one of the greatest shows on TV. And speaking of greatest shows, refer to my next post (this one is too long to talk about the most recent episode).Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you are a racist, I will attack you with the North."0 -
I haven't read any posts on the last episode yet but.. OH MY FUCKING GOD! I was never so into a single TV episode in my life. I watched it alone (I can't deal with other people when I need to pay attention to this show). I was screaming my brains out every commercial break! The whole episode was crazy, yet very revealing about the island. And then the end... wow, how could they wrap everything up so beautifully? It was simply amazing. AMAZING!Abraham Lincoln once said, "If you are a racist, I will attack you with the North."0

This last episode was AWAZING!!! Om-f-g.. Time traveling, Desmond and Penny, the leaping back and forth, blew my mind..your light's reflected now0
