You may all my disagree with me and that is cool. I did not like the episode last night and thought Michael's back story was kind of lame. Here are my problems and I admit, they may address some of these issues in a later episdoe. But after all the hype of Michael's return, here are my problems.
1. How in the hell was he rescued? Who rescued him? What was the explanation to him as to why he couldn't tell people who he really was? If I am Sayid, these are questions that I am most interested in.
2. After all he and Walt went through, all of the sudden Walt hates his dad because he did what any father would do to protect his son, which is ANYTHING?
3. Michael grew up on the island. He became a very strong dude. He fought to rebuild his relationship with his son and never quit on it. Now , again, because walt is a little upset because he killed 2 people, he just throws in the towel and wants to die? A little suspect for me.
4. Don't you think that Michael agreed to go on the boat a little too easily? Don't you think he agreed to help Ben a little too easily?
I liked the beginning and I liked how Sayid turned him in and the end. Did not see Russo dying at all, assuming she is really dead. I bet she is just wounded. It was cool how Ben said that they were more dnagerous than he was and then he sends them 3 into a firing range, assuming he was behind it.
Sorry, too analytical I guess. Normally I am not with LOST!

i imagine to a ten year old hearing that your father killed two people would be traumatizing no matter what the circumstances. i thought that was believable.

i don't think his suicide wishes had anything to do with walt....was because of the guilt over killing two people overwhelming him. that's why he kept seeing libby. i don't think he could handle the guilt and he was trying to redeem himself by agreeing to go on the boat to save the others.
In general I wasn't crazy about the episode. If Rouseau is dead, I will be very dissapointed. I was looking forward to finding out more about her and expecting her to be a key character. I also didn't like the fact that we knew someone was supposed to die beforehand which kinda ruined the surprise at the end. The question is who did the shooting. I don't think it was "The Others". Hadn't someone left the boat in the helicopter? Maybe it was someone from the boat.
It's interesting that everyone's favorite choice as the dude in the coffin has been Michael. Everything points in his direction. He is from NY, trying to kill himself, has a somewhat sour relationship with the Losties. He is not a member of the Oceanic 6 because his survival is a secret which would explain the lack of media glitz etc. at his funeral. But we find out he can't kill himself because the island is protecting him. So if it is him in the coffin then someone else killed him or his role has been played and the island no longer protects him at that point.
The funniest part of the episode IMO was finding out that Mr. Friendly was a little light in the loafers.
Did anyone notice the 3-frame shot of the show The Mole after each commercial break heading back into the show.
I don't know if it's relevant to Lost or if they're just promoting the return of the show.
It seemed to tie into last night's show though.

honestly i think there is something more that we are not getting. the island will not let you die right? well maybe the suffering is just that bad. maybe its more than just guilt.. its like the island is killing you without killing you.
annnnnd no i dont think he agreed to easily. i think someone is finally realizing that ben knows his shit and maybe, just maybe michael will end up doing somthing great for these people. the one thing i must say.. ben keeps his word. he never promises people things that he doesn't deliver. he told michael he could leave.. and he let him leave. probably knowing what the island would do to him. so now ben needs help. everyone looks at ben cross eyed because he's set up to be the "bad guy".. but i think theres alot more.
After searching, it appears The Mole is indeed coming back to ABC...so it appears to be a promotional thing.

The episode moved the sotry along and filled in some of the blanks. I don't think that Rosseau is dead just wounded and that it was the "Others" who were shooting. I'm sure they were close to the Temple and it was Ben's plan all along to get "his daughter" protected.
The thing that pissed me off the most was Aaron being included as one of the 6... wtf??? I love to see how they try to explain that or if it is just a catchy title given by the media to the 6 who were rescued... or if Aaron is somehow worked into the plane manifest by Widmore or Ben....

Remember the helicopter is off the freighter...so could it be some of those folks who were the ones shooting?
They could take Ben's daughter in exchange for him.
Just a thought.

yeah...i'm just really thinking it's someone ben sent to shoot rosseau and karl... that whole scene in the beginning when ben was sending them...just seemed too ominous and would be awfull coincidental that alex is the only one that didn't get hurt.

Both good points.
The suicide thing, it took him so long to get a relationship with Walt, it's hard for me to believe that he would want to end, regardless of his motives.

Well we now know from the preview that Turnip-Head is in fact the final member of the Oceanic 6.
I've been saying that for a long time. No one listens! Actually, I kept saying that I didn't think he was ruled out because of "not being on the manifest".

Again, he doesn't have to be in the plane manifest! Kate could have just said she had the baby on the island, which would still have him on the plane..ie Oceanic 6.
I've been saying that for a long time. No one listens! Actually, I kept saying that I didn't think he was ruled out because of "not being on the manifest".
Hey...I agreed with you...theoretically he was on the manifest as his mother was pregnant with him at the time.
Other random thoughts [pun was not intended, but it will work ] Most have probably already been mentioned, just count me as slow:
The Others are mostly the crew and cargo of the Black Rock.
The Island has a consciousness...wants, desires and needs. Leadership in the Others is based on the ability to commune with the Island. Manifestations of this consciousness include the smoke monster, Jacob and the various ghosts. Apparently, the island makes the choice of who has the ability to commune with it.
Penny is working for her father.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

He seemed quite friendly with Arturo.
Remember the episode in Season 3 (I think) where Kate is being held captive by the others. Well she's taking a shower and Tom walks in to give her a dress. He's smiling at her and Kate gets scared like he's going to attack her. He laughs and replies, "Sorry Kate, you're not my type."

I dunno, I thought it was a good episode.
yes the Michael story was tedious, but it was good to get the answers as to why he is on the boat-a lot more answers in each episode this season-which is good.
and I dont think he is one of the six (assuming thats who you guys call turnip head)
he and walt escaped earlier didnt they?
and karl and the french chick were shot by arrows, not guns-I wonder what is the significance of that
I thought the episode took too long to figure out what was going on with Michael. Was he it a flashback or was he in the time with Jack and Kate after they got off the island? I felt it was stumbling along for the first half hour. Then when it finally got going, it still wasn't great.
It also doesn't help the episode that it followed one of the best episodes of the series in my opinion. Last week's did a great job of setting up the story and even if we weren't sure what time it was (ie Jin story) we still were going along for the enjoyable ride.
I was going to respond to dirtyT's evaluation of the episode but haven't had time yet. I agree with most of what he said about the episode.

Arrows, are you sure? Gunshots were not heard, but silencers could have been used.
Also, did Alex stand up to say she's Ben's daughter to just save herself, or did she know they would be attacked? Or both?

ben told her they'd be coming after her because she's his daughter and she'd be a way to get to him.... i thought that's why she was doing it. figured she'd save herself by bargaining with them since ben's daughter would be no good to them dead.
of course, i still think it was ben's people doing the shooting...he just planted that idea in her head.
