A lot of talk about who is in the coffin coming up. It's been a while since the episode, but was their any kind of mention of the person in the coffin being a survivor of the plane crash. I mean, obviously Jack and Kate know him so you have to assume it is someone associated with the island, but wouldn't the media be all over the funeral if it were for a member of the "Oceanic 6"? Maybe it is someone else who got off the island, but is not known as a member of the "Oceanic 6". Maybe it is someone who got off the island by other means.
so why have we not discussed the fact that this trial took place in LA and not wherever the crime took place. usually you hold trials that are not federal crimes in the state it happened.
so maybe... just maybe.. kate was involved in a crime in california.. and maybe it involved claire.. and maybe thats why she's got the kid now.. maybe oh maybe.
and i agree.. kate ddint want jack on the stand because she didnt want anymore lies...
she loves aaron..but i think she got him in a very shady way...and there is no way she is going back to that island
I think that the court scene in LA was just an error.

The producers said last week we will find out who is in the coffin by the season finale. I think it is Ben. I think he was murdered by the people he has Sayid trying to kill. Widmore, Abaddon, etc. All those fake passports and $$ he had in the hidden room, I think that was a major clue.

i thought i read in the ew interview that the producers were saying they could keep dragging out the identity of the coffin person until season 5...?
it is too early for me to throw out a guess as to who the coffin person is. there is still way too much to be revealed (and the subsequent questions) to make a half educated guess right now.

DUUUUUUUUUUUUDE. That was AWESOME!! Seriously, excellent point!!!

Yes very good point.
I still think Sayid. And again, if he is a killer for Ben, it does Ben no good for the people he is having Sayid kill know that he is dead. So maybe, Sayid dies, and Ben covers it up. Maybe Sayid has an alias or something that Jack and Kate know about....I am reaching.

I was thinking about this...what if it is Kate's mom? She was dying...Jack called Kate that night to talk to her about whoever it was, he showed up at the funeral expecting to see someone (Kate?)
I was thinking about this...what if it is Kate's mom? She was dying...Jack called Kate that night to talk to her about whoever it was, he showed up at the funeral expecting to see someone (Kate?)
But surely Kate's mom has friends/family that would attend her funeral, right?!

Maybe she really, just didn't want Aaron apart of it. Maybe she is trying to keep Aaron behind closed doors to the world. Maybe Oceanic told her to keep Aaron as secret as possible, so that the possibilty of someone who knows it really wasn't hers, doesn't see him. Maybe Oceanic is afraid the world might find out, more people lived/are alive....does this make sense or did I make everyone else stupid?
Jack is always there to bail Kate out. Kate probably wanted to do this on her own. In a case like this - especially with character witnesses, there would be no surprise witnesses so Jack was listed as a possible witness for the defense.
The fact that Kate got so damaged by the opening remarks of the prosecuting attorney led her counsel to bring Jack as a witness.
But the fact there was a possibility Jack could testify, plus the fact that Kate didn't want her mom seeing Aaron are why I feel Kate didn't want him in court. Plus the obvious reason, Aaron thinks Kate is his mom. How traumatic would it be for a toddler to see their "mom" in handcuffs?
Still a stretch to say Kate didn't want Aaron there because Jack would testify, or she thought he might. Kate was really surprised when Jack took the stand. And if she didn't want Jack to see Aaron why did she invite him to her house?
I think Kate is just protective of Aaron and doesn't want to make things more traumatic for him than they already are. Maybe she feels some guilt over whatever happened to Claire, and I'm sure she doesn't want anyone from the island to have to be dragged into a trial for what she did pre-island.
so why have we not discussed the fact that this trial took place in LA and not wherever the crime took place. usually you hold trials that are not federal crimes in the state it happened.
so maybe... just maybe.. kate was involved in a crime in california.. and maybe it involved claire.. and maybe thats why she's got the kid now.. maybe oh maybe.
It is strange that the trial took place in LA. I do think they made it pretty obvious that the crime she was on trial for was the killing of her father. That's why her mom was testifying.
I was thinking about this...what if it is Kate's mom? She was dying...Jack called Kate that night to talk to her about whoever it was, he showed up at the funeral expecting to see someone (Kate?)
The fact that the obit Jack had said "Man from NY dies..." would lead me to believe it is not Kate's mom in the casket, unless sometime after the trial she flies to Sweden to have addadictomy surgery.
i thought i read in the ew interview that the producers were saying they could keep dragging out the identity of the coffin person until season 5...?
it is too early for me to throw out a guess as to who the coffin person is. there is still way too much to be revealed (and the subsequent questions) to make a half educated guess right now.
michael emerson said that on a radio interview, too.
and i, too, give up on trying to guess who's in the coffin.

Good call. So, someone who lives in NY, is having a funeral in LA?

Right, i couldn't make that out either. Do the have to be originally from NY, or could they just be presently living in NY?
didn't jin ask sun about living in ny in the last episode? and she told him she wanted to live in korea to raise the baby at home... maybe jin's the one in the coffin (i know, i know, i just said i'm not guessing anymore who's in the coffin).
oh wait, but if they funeral's in LA i guess they are living in LA now. nevermind.
I think Claire and Aaron leave the island, just as Desmond envisioned, but something may have happened on the freighter.
honestly if that were an error that would really suprise me. they are so careful with all of their details. yes silly things sneak through like the way sawyers hair is.. buuuuut... something as huge as the trial.. i would think that wouldnt be so hastily overlooked.
the other thing is at the end when we see Aaron he's about 4 or 5 right? so why wait that long for a trial. i know these things take a long time.. but for someone so high profile with such a story.. why wait almost 4 years to go to trial.. unless there was another crime committed after the island. this is just how my brain goes. if im wrong so be it.
ps- NCBRI nice job! i thought of the "celebrity" around them and you are right.. if its one of the oceanic 6 there would be press coverage. i think ive gone back to Michael. i still feel he is going to be the man working for ben. obviously he has betrayed everyone else to save his ass.. and he would not have a heroes welcome home. plus he's from new york.
i think a great twist(not saying its gonna happen.. and i dont read spoilers) would be if Claire was the 6th person. then desmond's vision would be correct and it would be crazy. i think most of us assumed claire died becuase kate had aaron.. oh man i hope they do that!

there's no way the trial is taking place 4 years after they got off the island. the earliest they could get off the island is dec 2004/jan 2005 (current day island time) and the newspaper jack sees the obit in is from april 2007 and by that point he is a mess, whereas at the trial he is clean and sober.

More importantly, why would Kate's mom die in LA and have her funeral there? Isn't she from Iowa?

Family - does she have any other than Kate? Friends, yep, good point.
Yep - good point...they've got me stumped.
No I could buy that.

No, I think I read they are revealing that this season, maybe in the first 7? That could be wishful thinking on my part.

Yep, here's the clipping Jack was holding in the finale:

So whoever it is is originally from New York and hung themselves in a loft.

There was a clearer screen cap someone posted, but if I remember correctly there was something about hanging from a beam in it.
Again, we don't know for sure, but I think whoever is in the casket committed suicide which led Jack to want to commit suicide too.
