Careca was great. There was this game, Brazilian Championship Finals, Sao Paulo x Guarani, 1986, 3-3, OT, and he scored the last goal on the last minute in one of those incredible plays. I think he is truly underated.

Oh, and by the way, there just happened to be this guy called Careca playing alongside Maradona. And Carnevale, De Napoli, Zola, etc. It was hardly a one-man team. As far as the World Cup goes, that is also a huge injustice to the likes of Brown, Valdano, Burruchaga, Ruggieri, Olarticochea, etc. No chance in hell he'd have done it without them.

My point, which was evidently missed, was that when it comes to a league, with almost 40 matches going over a 8-9 month span (as opposed to a short tournament format like......oh, I don't know, the World Cup?), it's almost impossible to claim one person is responsible for a team's success, regardless of how good they are. A player is only as good as the team around him allows him to look so.

Damn. Like Klumpie would say...no need to get in a "wrangle" :)

My replied was triggered by the Maradona mention on the post after yours...sorry I didn't read YOUR post more carefully and reply accordingly :)

Ok, so Maradona didn't do it all by himself technically, but hey, who is it that the Southern Italians worship? lol ":D . Most hold Maradona responsible for their team's success. Like a Southern Italian's flag that read on the Italy vs. Argentina game of the Italy '90 World Cup: "My brain says Italy, but my heart says Maradona."

But yeah. Like you said, usually "A player is only as good as the team around him allows him to look so"

Either way, there's no need to be so aggressive about it (and I mean aggressive by the tone of your reply, or maybe it's just me? sorry, It's hard to tell on a message board :p ) It wasn't a big enough deal for that kind of response, nobody attacked you nor your point of view. If I'm just overeacting, and what I implied is wrong, please disregard this :D

No, I heard/read about it (I also posted about it in one of the footy related threads I believe..lol). I was checking Clarin.com during the game to see how the score was, and was glad they were 1-1 and hoped it stayed that way. It was crap to hear they scored the goal on the 50th minute and while a player from the other team was down, and that there was a penalty kick for Gimnasia that wasn't awarded :p . Talk about fairplay...hehehe, River might be "Italianizing" itself? ;) just kidding of course :D

Oh well, Boca still has that 2nd half against Gimnasia pending, let's see if we can turn it around and be the sole leaders of this tournament :D

Rafa was actually aboot to scream at Alonso for not passing so glad it went in!
feel alittle bad for Harper too...he din do much wrong in the game cept for that slip.
overall though wasnt a convincing performance with too many missed chances by Kuyt and Bellamy.
Luis Garcia losing the ball and wasting chances as usual..and Gerrard just needs a rest..maybe he should skip the Spurs game.
thought we were lucky not to concede a penalty too for Agger's challenge.
