Griffey for the Sox could be the same as Edmonds for the Cubs. Low risk, lefty bat with pop, subpar stats, older, slower, but if he gets hot, he can carry this team. As Edmonds as proved time and time again this year. Now it obviously wasn't the #1 need for the Sox, and it seems like a move almost just to show that they aren't standing around not trying. I'm sure they tried to get some quality arms, but the price was too high, so they balked, and went for more of a PR move maybe. At least Griff didn't make the Sox pick up his 2009 option.
I agree. They didn't give up anything that will affect the future. Steve Stone said that, not me, so it must be true, haha. Being in playoff race might light a fire under him and with their offense being so streaky and Konerko sucking, they could use some more pop in the middle of the lineup. And it looked like a good move last night, hope it stays that way.
I don't think this was as much of a PR move as people think. Kenny has long been trying to get Griffey. Not only for what he brings to the field, but what he brings to the clubhouse. He's hungry. And they definitely needed some pitching, another starter would've been great, but Ozzie wanted another bat as well. And in terms of age, the Sox weren't even suppose to be in this position to begin with, so Kenny isn't looking to next year. We want it this year!
He floated back down 'cause he wanted to share, his key to the locks on the chains he saw everywhere.
Sox are back in first. Hopefully to stay. They just keep hitting them out of the park. Quentin leads the MLB with 35 HR and I'm pretty sure so do the Sox.

Quentin has been unreal this year. At this point, this guy is hands down the AL MVP.
Just got back from da game tonight. Clayton Richard pitched the best game of his short career, really looked good. Outpitched Felix Hernandez, who the sox were hitting hard. These are the games to fatten up on and keep up the pace. Gavin goes tomorrow before a big weekend series with the Rays. The boys are hittin, let's keep the pitching up where it's been the last 5 games and roll.

I'm sure most of you know me as a die hard Cubs fan, but I'm seriously not trying to start trouble or anything. I just want to know what you guys think of the Harold Baines statue.
Personally I think there are at LEAST 2-3 other Sox that would deserve a statue ahead of Baines. Didn't he only make 4 allstar games? Not that making an allstar game is a measure of a great player. Just kinda odd that the Cubs put up one for Ernie Banks and the Sox have one for Harold Baines. At least give it to Fisk.

They have one for Fisk as well. I think there are about 6 six out in the outfield now. Baines, Fisk, Pierce, Fox, Minoso and Aparicio I believe. I guess the difference between these and Banks is that these are inside the stadium, kinda just honoring Sox greats within the organization, not out in public. I think there is one of Charles Comiskey as well. I don't think there are any statues honoring a single player outside the stadium, only one for thee 2005 Champs.
And Baines actually had a pretty solid career. Played for like 20 seasons. I know he's close to 400 homers too.

Minnesota embarks on a 14 game road trip Thursday. Gotta make some hey in this next month.
Definitely. We gotta distance ourselves from the Twins since they won't have the homefield advantage of that absolute shithole that they call a baseball stadium for 14 games.
33 runs in three games DAMN! I know it was the Mariners, but that's still some great production. And Griffey finally got his first Sox homer, hopefully many more to come in the next 2 months. Looking forward to this weekend's series with the Rays. Go Go Sox!

Thanks, that makes a ton more sense. I was definitely not aware that those other guys were honored before Baines. It was certainly nothing against Baines, just thought those other guys should have been honored before him, which apparently they were.

Yeah and the "cell" is the crowning jewel of ballparks.
I like how the only critique of the Twins that Sux fans can come up with is the Metrodome. Hilarious. Our new park will kick all kinds of ass and then you will just have to complain that you _still_ lose to us all the time there and your manager likes our team more than his own. LOLzzzzzz

Here's a critique for ya. Your team's ERA goes from nearly 3 at home to almost 5.50 on the road. And it's even more drastic for your bullpen. So have fun on your road trip.
I also like how the Minnymen fans seem to think US Cellular hasn't changed since 1991. Hilarious. And I hope your new park kicks ass, bout time you had a baseball stadium.

Alexi is putting up better numbers than Span, and for a better team.
The Sox will go into that 2nd to last series of the season needing 1 win to clinch the division. So at least there will be one champagne celebration in the Baggie this season.

Your guy is at .309/.328/.490/.818
Span is at .314/.398/.454/.852
Other than the SLG %, Span has done more with the AB's he has had and is basically a CF'er in RF with the great plays he's made in the field this year. See the catch against Beltre a few weeks ago?
Right, either the Sux or Twins will win the division during that series.

And Alexi is a SS playing at 2nd. You see that backhand flip with his glove to get a guy out at first a few weeks back? Think it was Web Gem of the week. Either way, both guys are tremendous fielders.
No doubt Span is a great player. But when their stats are that close, you can't say he's done more with the AB's he's had. Span has 150 less at bats. I'm not taking away from what he's done, I just don't see how you can use that to your advantage. It's a lot harder to hit over .300 in 350 at bats than it is in 200.
Alexi should win it over Span because of consistency over a longer period of time. Is it fair to Span? No. But it's the truth. And oh yeah, Alexi has 7 homers and 26 RBIs since the all-star break, more than Span's season totals.
I'm not looking forward to that final series in Minny.

I was just saying that Alexi was NOT putting up better numbers than Span. He also got the game winning RBI for the Twins last night.
Damn, the Sox bats have to cool down one of these days, right? Does MLB quit drug testing for the season in August or something. Konerko has sucked ass all year and now he jacking the ball all over the place. What gives?
Despite the fire the Twins are still hanging around. Even though I despise Sox fans, I'd like to see both the Sox and the Twins make the playoffs.
Chalk one up over the Angels last night.

Well Konerko has averaged about 35 homers in each of the last 4 seasons, so it's not really that uncharacteristic. And all the other Sox players that are jacking the ball are atleast 20 homers a year guys, some 30+, like Dye, Thome and Swisher. And Quentin projected these kinds of power numbers as a prospect with the D-Backs (maybe not this good, but he's just having an MVP -type season.) Could say the samething about Kubel, but we don't need to stoop to that level to make excuses.
And why do you hate Sox fans so much? I mean, I hate the Twins, but I don't hate their fans. Waste of energy imo. I have many of Twins fans from college and we just like to chirp at each other, but it's all in good fun.
And yeah, go to your Minnymen thread.

Just keeping the seat warm for the Twinkies. They'll be there before long.
Better news is that they signed Gordan Beckham. He's gonna be a stud.

Just watched the highlights, awesome. They were pissed at the Royals after all that crap the last time they played, had to show em what's up.

So can Span, who would be ROY if it weren't for Longoria.
It would sure be fun if the season came down to that last series at the Dome.
