Sad news from our house. Our sweet, much loved dog Madison crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday. He was a rescue, at least 7 years old, probably much older. He had a hard life - we only had him for about 8 months, but we loved him to pieces.

My son wrote this about him: "He had the best eight months of his life at the end.
Not many living things on the planet have the best time of their lives at the end. I'll miss that wagging tail and having a dog that actually knew how to play fetch. RIP little Madbum."

Big big love from our home and hearts to yours, my friend.

Also, you've raised a wise and compassion son.

Thank you. I'd heard about people adopting older dogs just so the dog's last months/years could be spent not in a kennel - and yeah, it was hard putting him to sleep last week. But - wow, he really did have a great life there at the end. We loved him, our other dog Lisa loved him. I think he loved us. So I'm sure we'll do this again.

    cool stuff..
its so sad those dogs in the cold concrete kennels barking all night long and getting a hint of kennel cough
i seen it and it made me feel for those poor dogs, what annoys me is peoples negligence for them to get in there
    in the first place..
anyhow i put my hat down to people like yourself i hope you feel really happy with yourself for what you did for the doggy..

I'm sorry to report that my four-legged nephew, Max, has died. :bawling:
He was the King of Cool.

He and his mom, Glenn's sister, visited us at Christmas a few years ago. He wasted no time in making himself at home.

He was never far from his mom.

Thanks, guys. My SIL is taking it very hard. Max was her first dog and to make it worse, his death was very traumatic. We talked (and cried) a long time last night. I tried telling her some of the things that people here have expressed before. Wish she didn't live so far.

He was just 6. He was so loved, he should have had a long life like most chihuahuas do.

I've been so sad about it the last few days and I've struggled with whether I should tell the story here. I don't know if it has any merit other than that terrible and unexpected things can happen to any of us, no matter how much we love and protect our dogs. It's a hard story to hear, so you may want to skip the rest of this post.

My SIL, Joy, was dogsitting for a friend. She knew the dogs very well from seeing them at their house. They were 2 fairly large mixed breed, very sweet and friendly, always rolling over for tummy rubs, etc. She brought them to her house and put them in the back yard. Then she brought Max outside to introduce the dogs to each other. Like most chihuahuas, Max considered himself a total badass, so he immediately began barking like "WTF are you doing in my yard?" Joy said the other dogs seemed to change instantly and attacked Max. She had to fight them to get Max away from them and was bitten several times on her hands and arms. A neighbor took her and Max to the emergency vet, then Joy to the ER. Max died before they could even get him into surgery.

Joy is heartsick and questioning everything she did. We cried together a long time on the phone. I tried to tell her that they are animals and once instinct takes over, it will be in control, no matter how well trained the dogs might otherwise be. But I know this is going to be very hard for her for a long time.

I just think about when we visited Joy and Max jumped in my lap the first time I met him. When I took a nap one afternoon, he curled up beside me. He showed off all his agility training every evening when Joy made him "work" for his supper. They came from Florida to Texas for Christmas the next year and even though we usually have mild weather that time of year, damned if we didn't have a white Christmas for only the second time in my life. When we'd take him outside, he walked around all stiff-legged like "What is this white stuff?!" I am so sad for Joy and so sad that I'll never see him again. :heartbreak:

Maybe a lesson learned amid the loss? I don't know.

Nice she has you to lean on, and vice versa.
