what kind of car/truck is that norm? and does the pooch always ride in the back or just because he was wet?
i just got an suv with lots of room in the back. but i always let her ride in the middle seats because i feel she's just too far away back there. everyone says i should just put her back there and keep the rest of the car clean though.... :?

Hi everyone, so i have something on my mind. As many of you know, I have been looking for a puppy. Well i got an email a couple days ago that a dalmation puppy is ready for a new home (in late April). I have been asking myself, am i ready, is it too soon? I guess if it is meant to be, it will happen.
Ron? remember this? yeah, you should get a puppy
I'm freaking out lately....I take gracie, everyday, to a small park where off leash is prohibited....but, of course, she's always off leash  . I totally get the leash law thing but gracie NEVER is bad with other dogs, kids, people, etc. 9 times out of ten, "dog people" are the only ones there....and most of them let their dogs run, too. gracie loves to run and needs to run (for my sanity). anyway, I talked to a girl yesterday who just got ticketed. she said the animal control person appeared out of nowhere and was a total bitch. the girl said she and her dogs were the ONLY ones at the park. I've met the dogs....old sweethearts. well, no warning no nothing....just a $150 fine. gracie has no money to pay a fine and I'm going to be pissed if I have to pay. guess it's just a choice I need to make. then again, we're running if I ever see that bitch!

well. you could just give her a really long leash. Get one of those long tie out cords (or really long rope) and attach it to her leash. No one ever said you couldn't use a 50 foot leash...right??

every morning norm gets me up at 6  to go for our walk...it's a great 3 mile walk around a watershed...when i first started walking there, i'd keep norm on a leash but almost all the other dogs were off and very friendly...so i let him off leash and he's been great...he gets to run after rabbits, squirrels etc and i can concentrate on my walk without having to stop every 3 feet so norm can spend 2 minutes on one scent
been doing this for about a year now and there's been no problems especially if i get out there at daybreak...it's only me and a couple people walking...a couple weeks ago i found out animal services has been coming out and giving tickets for dogs off leash...hopefully they don't like to get up early so i should be ok but really, a responsible dog owner should know if their dog is good off leash...we shouldn't be punished for the bad owners...however, this area is also used by horseback riders so i can understand their concerns for dogs running loose but i just hope i never run into one of those "dog catchers" that are on power trips

good point. I have no qualms about gracie being off leash...not for her; not for the park's other users. another thing....we've probably been to this park 200+ times since I moved here last august and I've never seen the dog catcher. so, I kinda like my odds, but I keep hearing more and more stories of this "warnings are not my policy" nazi :problem:

So, any advice on house training? We've had ours inside now for about two weeks and things aren't going so great.
patience and persistence.
gonna take more than 2 weeks
just remember puppies have small bladders, and they havent yet learned how to tell u they need to go.
make a mental note to bring the pup out every 2 hrs...whether or not you think she needs to go out.
praise her like hell when she does her business outside. give her a small treat.
accidents are going to happen. positive reinforcement is key.
you'll eventually learn the signs she starts to give you when she needs to go out.
its probably best to use the same door to go out every time...that way, the puppy will eventually go to the door, and look at you and wait.
good luck...and share some pics!!!

Very important. That's why I asked how old. They just don't have the control while they're still small.
So, any advice on house training? We've had ours inside now for about two weeks and things aren't going so great.
are you home allthe time? Do you leave the pup by themsalves all day?
Best tip I got was take them out to pee FIRST thing in the morning, before YOU pee (the little ones can't hold it). Do not 'free feed' put them on a feeding schedule. Dogs love routine. Take her/him out right after meals. If they don't finish their meal within 20-30 minutes pick up their dish and no food until next meal time (pups should be fed 3-4 times a day until appx 8 months). Take them out every hour and keep a diary:
you get the idea...once you go out, say 'go potty' or whatever you want. I put a bell on the slider and I rang the bell every time I took my dog out, eventually,he started ringing the bell on his own when he wanted to go out...I'd say he was potty trained and ringing the bell by 6 months...and he also goes potty on command, which helps when on road trips! Don't get frusterated, make everything you do a happy experience, if they have an accident, don't say anything, just clean it up, if you rub their face in it, they learn 'going potty' is a bad thing and will hide it behind a couch the next time, best time to yell is 'mid-action' as they are relieving themselves, then yell 'NO!' and go lead them to the outside and praise praise praise.
Good Luck!
The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.
Great advice, Foo Dog, is almost 1 year old. We have been in the middle of building a home so I had to leave him at my parents house while we were in the middle of all of that chaos. Things have settled down now and we are really trying to make him an inside dog. All advice is appreciated.
More info:
My husband's work schedule is erratic, I'm a grad student/substitute teacher so I'm at home a lot of days, but I'm hopefully going to start working about 20 hours/week for the University soon (so that may change some days). We take him out first thing in the morning, last thing at night and in between. We keep him in his kennel at night in our room. I'll edit if I can think of anymore info that might be helpful. Keep the advice coming, so far it is great!!! Thank you!
same advice stands then...and RKCNDY is right about making the dogs schedule as normal and routine as possible.
You may need a little more training time...to undo any bad habits that may have been picked up...assuming training wasn't persistent at his temporary home...but the more routine you can make his feeding and potty schedule, the easier it will be.
What breed is Foo Dog?

I've had a few dogs that got car sick when they were young. They usually grow out of it. What worked best for me was putting their crate in the car. I don't know if it calms them or if it's just that they can't move around and watch the scenery flying by but I never have any problems if they're in the crate.
