    here's what's up :D

so last night i get his food ready and go to the backdoor to let him in...usually he hears me making his dinner and is patiently waiting at the backdoor

but he wasn't there...so i take a step out and here he comes at a leisurely pace...immediately i knew something was up...he looks up at me but continues to walk past me...so now i'm interested in what he has done because i had an overwhelming sense that he was up to something

next thing i know, he picks up something and starts shaking his head and whatever was in his mouth

    that something? possum

a possum the size of a house cat...i order him to drop it and tell him to get in the house...i go over to the possum to see what kinda shape it's in but it's just too dark and i don't want to go anywhere near the thing...but i did get a flashlight and it looked intact so i just left it there and hoped that it was playing possum ;) and it was because later on before i went to bed it was gone

    possums suck...
  • All these possum stories are reminding me of something that happened many years ago when we lived in our first house. We had 3 shelties named Sadie, Tess, and Riley. Tess was born deaf but she knew hand signals and she also followed along with whatever the other dogs were doing, so she considered herself a pretty tough watchdog.

One morning I let the dogs out in the back yard very early and took a shower. Then when I went to let them in, they were all underneath our plum tree barking. I just kept calling and calling and finally Sadie and Riley came in the house but Tess stayed under the tree barking like crazy. It was still kind of dark outside so I couldn't see what the deal was. I went out into the yard to see what Tess was barking at.

The plum tree was full of plums at that point and sitting in the tree was a big fat possum. He must have been having a tasty meal when I let the dogs out and they discovered him. Tess was jumping up and barking at him and he was hissing back at her. I had to pick up Tess and carry her back into the house.

My husband doesn't usually like to get up any earlier in the morning than absolutely necessary but the whole thing was so funny that I just had to wake him up to see it. After he got through laughing about it he decided he had to take pictures! (At the time, he was a professional photographer and I swear, he would take pictures of just about anything.) So he got his camera and took a bunch of shots of the pissed off possum in the tree.

Then we realized that we had to get the stupid thing out of there. Hubby got a broom and pushed the possum out of the tree. Then he had to try to get it out of the yard. You'd think it would run away but instead it just kind of stood there hissing at him. He would push it with the broom and it would hiss at him some more. THAT is what we needed pictures of, a guy in his bathrobe with a broom pushing a possum across the backyard! He finally got it to run out the gate and I don't think it ever came back to our plum tree. Stupid possum! :x
