Thanks Cosmo - my cell is dead so wasn't able to call anyway - I'll call from home tonight.

Hope everyone else is doing okay :)

Yeah... it was one of those minor quakes we get every so often. A co-worker works from his virtual office at home in Riverside County (nearer the epicenter) and he said stuff was flying off his bookshelves.
Long Beach is some 30+ miles away so the effect is lessened. Yorba Linda is closer than Long Beach, so there may be minor stuff (such as broken dishes), but more than likely... nothing too serious. Placentia is about the same distance as Long Beach.
    ...
Try sending E-Mail and have them phone you. It is easier to make calls out... than to make calls in.

I think anything less than a 6.0, you're not looking at huge damage yet. The Richter scale is exponential, so a 6.8 is 10 times as big as a 5.8. That said, a 5.8 is a pretty good one.

That Northridge quake back in 94 was nuts. My parents' house was trashed and my sister's apartment complex was destroyed.

we're OK here in Hermosa Beach, just don't have any cell service (we've got Verizon, Sprint and ATT).

that was sooooo freaky! Glad everyone is ok so far.
    ...
It's the phone lines. All the circuits get jammed because of the overload of calls (both in and out).
    Try sending E-Mails instead.

5.8 ain't so minor if you're within 15 miles of the epicenter

As someone who grew up in Whittier I can't say I agree. We got hit HARD in 87 & that was less than a 6.0 :D

DUDE!!! I grew up in Whittier too! In 87 I was sitting on the living room floor and the house seemed to shake FOREVER!! Wow, that was under 6.0?? Holy cow!
I was in my first year as CSUF and I worked at the Ralphs Market on Painter and Whittier Blvd. The aisles were such a mess there, racked up a lot of overtime during the clean up but you had to be over 21 to clean up in the Alcohol Dept because all the booze was spilled all over the place!! Craziness!

Hilarious! I'm in Whittier too! I live in Hollywood but spent the night at my folk's place. Whittier's pretty closer to Chino Hills/Diamond Bar I guess that's why we felt it so bad!

    Meh. Whittier was nothing.

Ha. Just kidding. No, you're right. I shouldn't generalize. It matters where the quake has its epicenter.

I was in Santa Barbara for the Northridge quake, and that one we felt and it actually took our power out for about 12 hours. That was a big earthquake. Crazy.
