LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A magnitude-5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said.
The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.
A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.

More like a tornado in Oklahoma. While expected on occasion, still unpredictable and scary. The thing with earthquakes, there is no warning. A beautiful cloudless sky here in LA. Then all of a sudden....
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river
Thank goodness you are here!!!....what is your theory on the earthquake?......what/who caused it?
If ever we needed your insight, it is NOW!
Too many home renovations per square kilometer going on at the same time. I'm predicting Arnold will send out a live broadcast this evening advising people to "call before you dig"

I always laugh when someone reminds me that Arnold Schwarzenegger is actually the Governor of California.

San Diego checkin in with a nice little shaker. Makes you feel alive...sort of, but it definitely gets the blood flowing. Sort of like a PJ show... rockon
I'm in Hermosa Beach...that was sooooo weird. Being from NJ, we don't have "earthquake preparedness" so the 3 of us that are home didn't know what to do!!!
None of our cells are working and we have Sprint, Verizon and AT&T.
Initially, I thought this was a thread dedicated to the late John Tenta.

Yeah, everything is A-OK. My sister just emailed me some details about our kids going to summer camp and she didn't mention the quake at all. Funny, it's like a normal part of life here in LA.
.........but I will say I am still a little freaked. It was really really long...........just kept going..........like this lame post..........I just keep typing.........

I am downtown and felt a nice jolt followed by rolling. The building I'm in wobbled for 2-3 minutes. I'm sure that was the building wobbling for a long time after the ground stopped shaking. Our building is 50 floors high.
Yorba Linda/Placentia is to the East of us, in the direction of the epicenter but not at the epicenter. If I felt what I felt, they definitely got hit. They probably felt it stronger than I did in LA. A lot has to do with the soil. If you are on rock, or hard soil, you'll feel less. And if you are on soft, sandy soil, you'll feel more. I just heard on the news that Angel stadium felt it hard but no damage. Anaheim is pretty close to Yorba Linda.

I'd much rather live where there are earthquakes. Unlike tornados, we don't have "earthquake season" Plus *most* of the time the damage is minimal. I'm pretty used to them by now. Although I knew this one was big b/c I actually got my lazy ass this time & stood under a doorway! HAHAHAHA
I love whoever said they took their lunch w/ them under their table. That's SO me!
