Rick Dipietro was sharp. The rest of the Islanders were relentless.
But it takes more than that to beat Henrik Lundqvist right now. And the Islanders yesterday became just the latest team to learn that playing against the Rangers' franchise goaltender is like beating your head against a wall.
Lundqvist stopped 34 of 35 shots, stared down two five-on-three power plays and pretty much dazzled from the drop of the puck until Michael Nylander redirected a Brendan Shanahan feed past DiPietro with 48.9 seconds left in overtime to give the sizzling visitors a 2-1 victory in a scintillating game at Nassau Coliseum.
Nylander's goal, on a power play resulting from the third penalty of the day drawn by Jaromir Jagr, lifted the Rangers (10-1-3 in their last 14) over Tampa Bay and into sixth place in the Eastern Conference. By getting to overtime, the Islanders earned a point and pulled into a three-way tie with Carolina and Montreal for the eighth and final playoff position, three points behind the Rangers.
"I just keep repeating that you can't win in this league - especially to make the playoffs - if you don't have a great goalie," Jagr said. Then, grinning, he added: "I'm just glad that ours is better than everybody else's."
It would be hard to mount an argument given Lundqvist's recent run.
Yesterday's game was the fifth straight in which Lundqvist allowed one goal or none, all victories. He has stopped 142 of 145 shots (97.9%) over that span while playing to an 0.58 goals-against average.
He has started the Rangers' last 11 games, during which he has allowed only 15 goals (1.32 GAA) while stopping 300 of 315 shots (.952 save percentage).
"He allows the defensemen and forwards to play the way we need to play," defenseman Marek Malik said.
The way the Rangers in front of Lundqvist needed to play yesterday was with resolve, because the Islanders came at them just as a team just out of the playoff bracket should - with desperation and drive.
That and a refereeing tandem that called a tight game heaped pressure on the Rangers' penalty killers. But if any group of Rangers is up to handling pressure, it's those guys.
They entered the game having killed 19 straight and 30 of 31. The streak had run to 26 straight and 37 of 38 when the Islanders' second five-on-three of the game expired early in the second period.
But while the Isles still were one man up, Alexei Yashin redirected a Tom Poti centering pass, getting the puck to squeeze through Lundqvist's pads and trickle just over the goal line to tie it 7:37 into the third period.
That goal matched the second-effort tally by Colton Orr midway through the second that had given the Rangers a 1-0 lead. And it revved the Islanders even further.
Lundqvist simply wouldn't be beaten again.
Neither would DiPietro - even on a lengthy five-on-three for the Rangers late in the third. But when Jagr burst through the Islanders on the next-to-last shift of four-on-four overtime, Sean Hill almost had to hook him and the Rangers had their seventh power play of the game.
This time, with the Isles understandably preoccupied with taking away Shanahan in the left circle and Jagr at the top, Nylander was left alone in front. Shanahan threaded a pass that Nylander redirected just inside the right post and the Rangers had a third straight 2-1 victory over the Islanders after losing the first four games of this eight-game season series.
"The only way you're going to make the playoffs is by winning these games," Jagr said afterward, blood trickling from a cut upper lip.
The way the Rangers are winning all games these days starts with the fabulous play of their goaltender.

For the second time in three weeks, Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has been named the NHL's First Star. Also earning league-wide recognition for the week ending March 25 were San Jose Sharks right wing Jonathan Cheechoo, the No. 2 star, and Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak, the No. 3 star.
Each Monday, the NHL recognizes three players who delivered the League's top performances over the past week.

Lundqvist posted a 4-0-0 record with a 0.72 goals-against average and .974 save percentage as the Rangers (39-28-9, 87 points) moved up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Great game between Rangers and Isles yesterday. Only got to see about 1 period of it because for some reason they were showing Pittsburgh and Boston here until finally switching over. Its gonna be quite a fight down the stretch. Everyone is pretty much even now in games played at either 75 or 76. 6 points separate 7 teams in the standings. Schedules match up Toronto, Montreal, NYI, and NYR a lot down the stretch. This could help my Canes, but we have to win our games or it wont matter. Hoping we can somehow catch Atl in the division.

Netminder Rick DiPietro is out indefinitely, suffering from post-concussion syndrome. Sources tell TSN DiPietro is not feeling well and did not pass a neuro-psychological exam and will be out of the lineup until he feels better and can pass the test.
DiPietro suffered the initial injury in a collision with Steve Begin of the Montreal Canadiens on March 13. He missed the next two games and the Islanders lost both, giving up 13 goals in the process. He returned to action on March 20 and played in four games, posting two wins and two overtime losses. Now, though, he's affected by symptoms from post-concussion syndrome and there's no telling when he'll be back in the lineup.
