if you were watching that first period its very likely that by now youve either thrown your entire dinner up, or you lost whatever appetite you had entirely.

No one was surprised to find the locker room doors closed after last night's 6-1 drubbing by the Devils at the Garden one night after an even worse 9-2 loss in Toronto. No one was complaining as the wait extended ten, fifteen minutes before the coaches finally left the room and the players were exposed to the press. "There was no yelling," said Brendan Shanahan. "There was just a little bit of soul searching. It was group participation." Said coach Tom Renney of the meeting: "We just talked about getting back to what we want to be, talked about the little things that have to be done at this level by any team in order to have success, never mind the New York Rangers, who happen to be looking for some footing."

With fans having reached the point of wanting to examine why things have gone wrong (even during a fortunate five game winning streak), the team wants to look ahead. "I don't think there's a whole lot of examination needed to know what went wrong looking at the last 48 hours," said Shanahan. "We're a step slow all over the ice, which leads to breakdowns, which leads to penalties, which leads to power play goals, and that's it. We've had a great run lately that the last 48 hours really had very little in common with. Rather than talk about all the excuses and reasons why we've been struggling, with the schedule and injuries, we want to prepare for our next game. The Islanders aren't going to feel sorry for us because we're not 100%."

"I'm not really sure where to put my finger on this one," said Renney. "We have to get back to being the team that dictates the terms of at least how we're going to play, and we've not done that here that last four or five games. We made some really silly puck decisions, we made some silly support decisions defensively as well as offensively. I don't want to make excuses or crap like that because that's exactly what they are. I could protect everybody and say all kinds of things as to why this is happening. I'm not going there. No way. It's dangerous to do that. We're paid to play. We have to accept that responsibility. And the guys do -- they get it."

Renney accepts responsibility on behalf of himself too. "This is coaching too," he said. "It's not just about those guys in the room. It's about all of us doing what we're supposed to do to get ourselves back on track and winning. As a staff we accept our responsibility wholeheartedly." But are fans willing to accept just that? They want to see some tangible steps taken that reflect where the responsibility lies. Fans want to know why some players continue to contribute to these problems while others that they want to see develop are left to languish in Hartford rather than get the same chance.

Shanahan is having none of that converstaion. "We can talk a lot more about things we can do in the next 48 hours than about how many things have gone wrong in the last two games," he said. "We talked about sticking up for each other, lifting each other up. We've gone through a little bit if adversity the past couple of games, and the way some of the guys are feeling, we're going to have some adversity for the next couple of games. Rather than just mail in the points, we've got to adjust our game, our approach, and come out and just try to get a win. You have to take it as a test. The last two nights we haven't done well with that."

"If we had a team full of jerks, I'd honestly tell you that, and we'd be doing something about it," said Renney. "That's not the case here. We know our guys. We know what kind of people they are and how badly they want to do well together. Naturally I anticipate that that will pull us through here."

Petr Prucha returned to action and provided one of the few bright spots of the game with a gorgeous breakaway goal after providing one of the scariest moments in recent memory when he was cut across the face by a skate blade (incredibly, Colin White, the player who accidentally grazed Prucha as a result of a penalized trip by Prucha, was himself grazed by a flying skate blade later in the game). Afterwards, with cuts on both his eyebrow and his cheek showing how narrowly he escaped a serious eye injury, Prucha talked about what it meant for him to score a goal after being scratched for two of the last three games and getting scant ice time in the third game.

"I felt really good for me and my confidence," he said of the backhander he lifted over Martin Brodeur's glove to cut the Devils' lead to 2-1 after coming off the bench during a Devil line change to accept Jaromir Jagr's breakaway pass. "After that, we didn't win the game. It's always a disappoinment. Hopefully that goal will help my confidence and it can help our team some." Asked what advice he got from the coaching staff during his benching, he said, "It's simple -- just keep working. Never give up. I know I didn't play too good last, maybe, month. I keep working. We'll see if I can find a spot in our line-up."

Because of all the injuries (Matt Cullen's sprained knee) and illnesses (Michael Nylander's turn with the flu), the Rangers had to dress seven defensemen and juggle all their lines. The seventh defenseman became a fortuitous happenstance when Marek Malik left the game early in the first period with a groin strain -- although most of you probably don't envision Sandis Ozolish as any kind of fortuitous happenstance. On a defense that included Aaron Ward's awful turnover on Jersey's killer third goal and a trio of defensemen on the ice for three goals against each (Ward, Rachunek, and Tyutin), Ozolinsh actually wasn't all that bad of a happenstance in this particular instance.

Zach Parise had a goal and two assists to raise his season statistics to 11-12-21 in 31 games in his second NHL season. We'll be seeing his name a lot in the future, and it will always remind us of the player the Rangers failed to draft in 2003 because they wanted Hugh Jessiman's size. Seven top-twelve first round picks in eight years, and the Rangers have nothing to show for it, the ship having already sailed on most of them and the sun slowly setting on the handful still in the Rangers organization, with the possible exception of Marc Staal (so far).

Although Shanahan said the post-game meeting involved "group participation", John Dellapina reports in the News that Shanahan and Renney were the only ones to speak. Other game reports can be found in the Times, Post, Newsday, Journal News, Star Ledger, Record, SNY, NYR.com, and NY Sports Day. A brief report on the skate incidents in the Ledger. Colin Stephenson makes a cameo appearance at the Garden with an article in the Ledger on Darius Kasparaitis. Articles on Parise in the News and SNY (the latter comparing him to Prucha). Al Stachan might want to rethink the thesis of his Toronto Sun article after last night's game.

    bye bye Ozolinsh,

DEFENSEMAN POCK BACK FROM CONDITIONING STINT
    12/18/2006

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that defenseman Thomas Pock has been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League (AHL).

Pock, 25, has skated in six games with the Rangers this season, registering one goal and one assist for two points. After being assigned to Hartford (AHL) on December 11 for conditioning, Pock recorded one assist, along with a plus-one rating in four games with the Wolf Pack.

In 2005-06, the 6-1, 210-pound defenseman spent a majority of the season with Hartford (AHL), registering 15 goals and 46 assists for 61 points, along with 99 penalty minutes in 67 games. He finished the season ranking second on the Wolf Pack in assists (46) and tied for fifth on the team in scoring with 61 points. His 61 points ranked third among all AHL defensemen and also set a Wolf Pack franchise record for points in a single season by a defenseman.

In addition, the 2006 AHL All-Star appeared in eight games with the Rangers last season, registering one goal and one assist, along with four penalty minutes.

    Wee Little Beasties

Sun, Dec 17, 12:15 PM Pacific

The Rangers are being rocked... but not by 240-pound Eric Lindros or Derian Hatcher. They are being felled by creatures weighing a trillionth as much.

Flu shots have been routinely administered to hockey players at many levels (college, juniors, pro) for more than three decades. And the results are still being debated because nary a season goes by without some bug running rampant through the dressing rooms of the respective circuits.

Two weeks ago, the Blueshirt forwards were struck. This past week, it's been the rearguard suffering with fever, chills, sweats, congestion, general malaise, lack of stamina, trafficonitis and worse.

It's why I'm not reading too much into the Dallas encounter. It's why I'm not reading too much into Saturday's debacle in Toronto.

The team is in the midst of a ten game in seventeen days stretch and the grind, plus the travel is wearing them down, making them extra-susceptible to Anton Van Leeuwenhoek's germs of winter.

One guy's kid brings a virus home from school and then he recruits it into the MSG showers and no vaccination on the planet appears to prevent the deluge.

Modern uniforms and protective gear are now made from synthetic materials which shed moisture and (together with aggressive disinfection protocols) have largely eliminated the locker room blight of the 1970s, a fungus known simply as "the rash". But sub-microscopic wee little beasties remain unchecked.

Every team gets it at some point during a campaign. This is the moment for New York. You weather it best you can and hope to emerge from its grip not too far down in the standings.

As troublesome as these microbes are, let us not quickly forget the great lesson taught to us by Herbert G. Wells. For without influenza patrolling our atmosphere, the Martians would have conquered this man's league many, many moons ago.

Rivalry intensifies as Isles return to Garden

    12/19/2006

Rangers (18-12-4) vs. New York Islanders (16-12-3), 7 p.m. ET

Rangers assistant captain Brendan Shanahan wasn't mincing words following the Rangers' home loss to New Jersey on Sunday night.

Asked about the Blueshirts' grueling schedule, which includes 10 games in 17 days, and the recent injury problems that contributed to a two-game losing streak, Shanahan said there was no time or place in the locker room for sympathy heading into tonight's key Atlantic Division matchup against Islanders at MSG.

"Rather than talk about the excuses over the last couple of days with (the) schedule and injuries, it doesn't matter because the Islanders aren't going to feel sorry for us," Shanahan said. "They aren't going to dress eight in their lineup because we aren't 100 percent. You have to make adjustments to your game and to your style to get the win. You have to take it as a test. The last two nights we haven't done well with that."

Shanahan's message to was clear, and when the Rangers host the Isles for the second time in 16 days tonight, it will be on the minds of just about everyone in the building. No excuses will be accepted in the locker room after tonight's game, and it's even more unlikely any will be offered.

This is truly a big night for the Rangers and their fans, as the Blueshirts play their last home game before Christmas. Fans holding tickets for this game may consider themselves fortunate. Not only are they in for what should be an intense edition of the longstanding Rangers-Islanders rivalry, but they will also be on hand to witness a special pregame ceremony planned for tonight.

Details of the pregame ceremony have not been released, but it begins promptly at 7 p.m. and will be carried live on MSG as part of tonight's television broadcast. Fans attending the game are encouraged to take their seats no later than 7 p.m.

The ceremony is truly a bonus, because this game doesn't need outside stimuli to promise excitement, particularly now that Shanahan has thrown down the gauntlet. It was Shanahan, of course, who nearly led the Blueshirts back from a 4-0 first-period deficit in their last meeting with the Isles on Dec. 3, thrilling the home crowd and sparking his entire team in the process.

Shanahan registered his first Rangers hat trick in that game, helping cut the Islanders' lead down to 4-3 late in the second period and 5-4 midway through the third before Viktor Kozlov scored twice to put the game out of reach. Shanahan scored the first, third and fourth goals for the Blueshirts, with one coming shorthanded, one on a power play and one at even strength.

Revenge has been a common theme throughout the Rangers-Islanders rivalry's 34-year history, and tonight is a prime example. Victory won't come easy, however, as the Blueshirts must cope with the flu bug that has run its course through the team, as well as recent injuries to both forward Matt Cullen (knee sprain) and defenseman Marek Malik (strained groin), who are listed as day-to-day.

The lineup experienced a minor shakeup on Monday, as 25-year-old defenseman Thomas Pock was recalled from Hartford to take Sandis Ozolinsh's spot as the team's seventh defenseman. He would certainly see action tonight if Malik is unable to play. Pock brings tremendous offensive potential to the Rangers blueline, having scored a highlight-reel goal earlier this season against Philadelphia at The Garden.

The Islanders' lineup will also look a bit different from the last meeting. The main change is the addition of captain Alexei Yashin, who was injured on Dec. 3 but is now healthy again. In his first game back with the Isles and Saturday in Uniondale, Yashin scored a goal in his team's 6-0 win over Atlanta. Islanders defenseman Chris Campoli also missed Dec. 3 with an injury but has since returned.

Another defenseman could be in the Islanders lineup as early as tonight if he is deemed healthy. Freddy Meyer, obtained from Philadelphia in exchange for Alexei Zhitnik last week, has a good track record against the Rangers. Last season, Meyer had six points in seven Flyers-Rangers games, but he has been struggling with back spasms.

The Saturday night win over Atlanta was only the Islanders' second in five games since their previous trip to Madison Square Garden. Beating the Rangers on Dec. 3 gave the Islanders an emotional lift at the time, but it did not translate into any improvement in the standings. The third-place Isles are still five points behind the first-place Rangers, who continue to lead the Atlantic Division despite their back-to-back weekend losses.

The Rangers will need q 2in tonight to be assured of remaining in sole possession of the Atlantic lead, because New Jersey, trailing by two points, has a home game against the Thrashers. The Islanders also need a victory to move into the Eastern Conference's top eight. If the season ended today, the Isles would miss the playoffs, and they are currently in a fight with both Pittsburgh and Ottawa just for the No. 9 position.

On top of the emotional intangible that factors into tonight's game, there is the all-important issue of goaltending that has been a driving success for both teams.

The biggest reason the Islanders have exceeded preseason expectations this year is undoubtedly play of netminder Rick DiPietro. When DiPietro is on, he is extremely tough to beat, as was the case for the Thrashers in a 37-save performance on Saturday. One night earlier in Pittsburgh, however, DiPietro yielded five goals on 29 shots and was removed from the game after two periods.

Should DiPietro get the start again tonight, the level of his performance could decide the outcome. The same is true for Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, expected to return to the net for the first time since allowing eight goals in Toronto on Saturday. A strong Lundqvist showing at MSG would go a long way toward restoring the Rangers to the level they of play they exhibited during the recent five-game winning streak that preceded the lopsided loss to the Leafs.

Another key to tonight's game is Blueshirts captain Jaromir Jagr, who seems to have embraced this longstanding rivalry with the Islanders. He had the other goal in the Rangers' loss to the Isles on Dec. 3 and has registered at least one point in his 10 of his 11 games against the local rivals since joining the Blueshirts. He has scored at least one goal in seven of those 11 games, finding the net a total of 10 times.

STANDINGS: Islanders -- 35 points, 3rd place, Atlantic Division. Rangers -- 40 points, 1st place, Atlantic Division

TEAM LEADERS: Islanders -- Jason Blake, 16 goals; Alexei Yashin, 18 assists; Blake, 32 points; Brendan Witt, 54 PIM. Rangers -- Shanahan, 22 goals; Jagr, 33 assists and 47 points; Ryan Hollweg, 67 PIM.

    SPECIAL TEAMS: Islanders -- Power play: 17.3 percent (24 for 139). Penalty killing: 80.4 percent (148 for 184). Rangers -- Power play: 18.4 percent (34 for 185). Penalty killing: 82.0 percent (155 for 189).

    GOALTENDERS: Islanders -- Rick DiPietro (13-9-1, 2 SO, 2.80 GAA); Mike Dunham (3-3-2, 0, 2.83). Rangers -- Henrik Lundqvist (14-8-2, 1, 3.12); Kevin Weekes (4-4-2, 0, 3.15).

    2006-07 SEASON SERIES: Islanders, 1-0-0

LAST MEETING: Dec. 3: Islanders 7, Rangers 4 at Madison Square Garden. Trailing 4-0 after one period, the Blueshirts engineered a spirited comeback behind Brendan Shanahan's 18th career hat trick and first in a Rangers uniform -- making it a one-goal game in the third period before the Islanders scored twice in the final 6:08 to ice it. Both of the Islanders' last two goals came from forward Viktor Kozlov, who recorded the first four-goal performance of his 12-year NHL career.

    ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Islanders -- 7-6-1 on road; Rangers -- 7-6-3 at home.

Maybe they'll be offering a free fish stick giveaway for dinner with the Gortons Fisherman making a rare appearance at MSG at Centerice. ?

    Third Time's The Charm

Tue, Dec 19, 1:45 AM Eastern

Yeah. I know you're all anxious to learn what's going on transaction-wise given the Slam! report of Petr Nedved's potential return to Broadway.

Before I get to that, I want to respond to the attacks on the officiating last night, in particular the call against Martin Straka for tugging Pat Elias when the Rangers were already killing a penalty with less than a minute remaining before the first intermission.

    Was it a marginal call?

    Absolutely.

But run your tapes back a few more seconds... to the 19:10 mark. Watch closely as Darius Kasparaitis nails Brian Gionta along the near boards as the puck is dumped into the Blueshirt end. It was a great hit - vintage Kaspar. But there's a problem.

That is interference, folks. Gio was not the puck carrier. Darius can't do that. No matter how you cut it, New York was gonna go a pair down.

Now for the rumor mill. I've poked around and have the following surmissions to share with you:

    • Nedved specifically asked Holmgren to determine Glen Sather's interest in the former Czech Posse pivot. Petr is not Slats' first choice. But alternatives are not abundant.

    • Management is not unanimous regarding Meda, otherwise he'd have been plucked from reclaim waivers a month ago when (as I told you then) Philly'd be on the hook for ½ his salary and ½ his cap impingement. Nedved has his supporters and detractors in the Blueshirt brain trust.

    • Slats has decided to augment the club with veterans from outside the organ-eye-zation. Slats is dissatisfied with the readiness of Gotham's kinderen to help this season... and he's dissatisfied with Matt Cullen's playmaking prowess. So The Boss is looking for a second line center.

Which begs the question about the duration of Cullen's deal. But that debate is for another day.

    • Sandis Ozoloinsh was very definitely demoted when he was so as to free up cap space in case Sather could swing a deal by the midnight holiday transaction freeze. The move was not linked to Jed Ortmeyer's rehab schedule.

    • It is my suspicion that John Davidson was consulted to be a facilitator based upon a couple of names which were said to be explored as part of a multilateral exchange.

    • Like it or not, Glen is determined to go deep into the postseason this spring rather than use March for promotion auditions.
