I noticed they changed some players numbers around, like Callahan, Dubinsky, Staal and Girardi. Good thing I haven't ordered my new jersey yet! I'm 99% sure it'll be Callahan.

Drury & Jagr Want Fast Start

    tomorrow night baby !

Drury-Jagr set to get Rangers off to fast start

The first-try combinations that Rangers coach Tom Renney termed the ones "everyone on the planet would consider obvious," have so far turned out not to be as obviously complementary as expected.

So for tomorrow night's season opener against Florida at the Garden, it will be Chris Drury rather than Scott Gomez who gets the first real crack at making on-ice music with Jaromir Jagr.

Drury centered Jagr and Martin Straka in practice yesterday while Gomez skated between Sean Avery and Brendan Shanahan. Those combinations meshed better over the final few preseason games than the "obvious" Gomez-Jagr and Drury-Shanahan ones did. And in pursuit of the fast start that would preclude a repeat of last season's furious rally to make the playoffs, Renney is going with what figures to require less break-in time.

"I also think that as our guys get their feet under them with respect to how we want them to play - and how we want to play in general - diversification (in line combinations) will just be seamless," Renney said. "It's just a matter of what looks most comfortable while you get your head around all of that. You still have to allow players to play and be instinctive and do the wonderful things that they can without feeling encumbered by the weight of a system."

Centers Gomez and Drury, of course, are the new guys to Renney's on-ice system. Gomez came from a read-and-react Devils team, Drury from a go-go Buffalo club. The Rangers play a combination of the two.

And while Gomez and Drury are adapting to that, Renney is assigning each to the right winger whose game most naturally fits. So while Gomez might have been viewed as the No. 1 center when signed to a seven-year, $51.5 million deal on July 1, his puck-control and pass-first game require no adaptation to pivot the get-open-and-shoot Shanahan.

Similarly, although the more versatile Drury figured to center a second line that could even be deployed in a defensive mode at times, he has proven better able to play off Jagr's unique game so far.

"I think the greatest thing is that we have the options," Gomez said. "And I think that right now, that line with Chris and Jags and Straka looks like it could be really dangerous....To start it off, I like to pass it and (Shanahan) likes to shoot it."

COURT DATE: Attorneys from both sides having met with Judge Loretta A. Preska yesterday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan set Oct. 23 as the hearing date on the preliminary injunction the Garden is seeking in its suit against the NHL. The Garden is seeking to prevent the league from levying daily fines of $100,000 unless the Rangers hand over control of their Web site to the NHL and terminate other solo marketing ventures that the NHL's Board of Governors has voted to centralize under the league umbrella.

Less than 24 hours to go gentlemen before the long march begins..

Though the lineup/special teams combinations are not getting good reviews in the papers the last few days. Ok, so maybe it's mostly Larry Brooks, but still.

Safe to say that the Rangers played 20 minutes of great hockey..out of a possible 60 minutes. But a win is a win I guess.

  • Questin for Ranger fans:

How do you feel about the team being owned by an idiot like Jim Dolan? Does it bother you? reason I ask is because I was a pretty big Ranger fan from 1989 until 1999. I initially lost interest because I was working 50-60 hours per week and going to grad school full time during the season and just didn't have time to get into it. Then when I had some time, they stunk. I don't mind a team that's bad, but they were spectacularly bad, and with the biggest payroll in the league to boot. Then, the lockout. I've tried a few times since to get back into it, but just can't seem to. And part of it is because the game has changed since the early 90's when it was more wide open and offensive. But there's also a part of me that just can't root for anything that has that Jackass Jim Dolan's fingerprints on it. So, how do you feel about the team being owned by Jackass Jim Dolan?
  • stickboystickboy Posts: 2,981
I dont wanna think I wanna feel
and considering it was the 1st game, Im miles away from my peoples in NY and msg, I was screaming and jumpin up n down like it was a playoff game
FUck Dolan....the team is exciting bro, just watch them w/o that thought in your head and you'll get stuck again. I Guarantee it!
