I'm going to Thrashers/Rangers game 1 instead of going to the Braves game as we had planned since we just happen to be in town for a wedding. It'll be the first time I've ever seen the Rangers in person. Only bad thing is I'm going with all Atlanta fans so I'll have to tone it down. :)

    GO RANGERS!

WILD vs RANGERS for the Cup, deal?

The Rs always have multiple fans at away venues, you wont be alone, but you will be rooting for the winning team , even tho they are the " away " team

I don't have anything against the Thrashers other than they got their expansion team before we did.

I will not bite my tongue, but you will not hear news reports of a crazed Ranger fan at the game being escorted out, either.

    Waddaya mean???

It's true though, I love playoff hockey. My first hockey game in recent memory was a playoff game in 1992. NORTH Stars vs Detroit. A fight broke out 15 seconds into the game and the Stars rallied from 4-2 down to win 5-4.

does anyone else feel like maybe Isbister shouldnt be scratched ?

he has been so strong on the puck, protecting the puck, setting up Jags and working well with Nylander.

No, not many goals ( zero ) but man talk about disrupting the chemistry,..

still, nice to get hossa back, but c'mon,

    Blueshirt Bulletin

    Prepping for Playoffs
Update: Jagr missed practice because of a cold, same as Lundqvist yesterday. Shanahan gets media's Good Guy award (Jagr was ineligible, having won last year's award). See Rangers Report and Blue Notes for more.

Update: Wolf Pack release Tommy Pyatt, Tomas Zaborsky, Kenny Roche, and David Kveton from their ATOs. Look for them in various training camps over the summer.

The Rangers continue to prepare to their first round playoff opener Thursday night, practicing at the MSG Training Center. They expect to go into the game with only one line-up change -- Marcel Hossa replacing Brad Isbister. Karel Rachunek should return some time during the series as well, probably in place of Thomas Pock (barring further injury) -- Pock did indeed sign a two-year contract extension, according to Blueshirts Blog. This is the Thrashers' first playoff appearance ever, and the first NHL playoff game in Atlanta since the Flames lost to the Rangers in 1980. For more, see the Daily News, Journal News, Newsday, Times, Post, Record, Ledger, Rangers Report, and AJC. Playoff previews: Post, NHL.com, THN, Spor

    Getting ready
It's all about being prepared now. They made the playoffs, they know who they are playing, when and where. Atlanta is a good team with a bunch of dangerous weapons, but they are not unbeatable. They struggle on special teams at times, and like the Rangers, had been streaky during the regular season. The Blueshirts came out of a better division with only one less win than Atlanta.

But if you believe goaltending is the difference-maker, there really isn't a contest, at least as far as post-All-Star break performances go. Henrik Lundqvist has been the best goaltender in the NHL, period. Check out the Rodent's charts on this very topic. Atlanta's netminder, Kari Lehtonen, doesn't even crack them.

While there are plenty of players on the Thrashers with considerable postseason experience, this is the organization's first foray into the playoffs. The Rangers, meanwhile, while strangers to the dance for most of the last decade, have the tiny little benefit of having been schooled by Marty and the New Jersey Devils last year.

We can hope that the team will be more prepared, but Tom Renney plans for them to be a little less prepared. The coach revealed that there may have been too many X's and O's to worry about against the Devils. He feels that this year's squad needs to go out there and play a solid, less complicated game.

Renney mentioned that the team is more physically competitive this time around, and of course that has much to do with Sean Avery. The gritty agitator is mentioned in just about every postseason preview I have read (including here and here), and surely the Thrashers must be thinking about him as well. This bodes well for the Rangers, because if a lot of attention is being paid to Avery, perhaps just enough room will be available for Jagr, et al.

These upcoming contests are exactly the reason Brendan Shanahan was signed, and luckily for us he has improved every single game since returning from his injury.

More good news is that Marcel Hossa will probably make his return on Thursday for Game 1. He skated along with Nylander and Jagr at practice, replacing Brad Isbister. While it looks like Isbister will be scratched, I think he would be a better fit for the fourth line than Ryan Hollweg. At least Brad has a chance to score.

You can read more on the team here and here.

Do you know the date of the last playoff game the Ranger's won? May 18th, 1997. Say that to yourself again, and then think about where you were in life almost TEN years ago.

I'm fairly confident that date will be erased from our databanks. This year, I am wondering just how many games they can win, not IF they can win at all.

I THINK hossa back will be an x factor,,, it can be good or bad
going against his brother who outshines him should be motivation enough
plus he is rested and better be hungry
izzy is ready if a change is needed
maybe they scratch a tough guy ?? and put izzy on the4.th line
then he can always move up in the game if a change is needed

we need to take advantage of their pk
it was weak in the reg. season

    Rangers Thrash Talking

    THRASH TALKING
RANGERS' PEST AVERY NO STRANGER TO PLAYOFFS
    By LARRY BROOKS
SEAN AVERYApril 11, 2007 -- Sean Avery will make his NHL playoff debut tomorrow night in Atlanta, but this won't be the Rangers' catalytic converter's first big-league postseason experience. Far from it.

In 2002, as a 22-year-old rookie who split the season between Detroit and AHL Cincinnati, Avery practiced and traveled with the Red Wings throughout their march to a Stanley Cup championship.

"It was a terrific learning experience for me," said Avery, who yesterday celebrated his 27th birthday. "It taught me a lot about what it takes from both a physical and mental commitment to go all the way.

"You couldn't ask for more as a young player than to be able to soak in an education the way I did that year from the veteran leaders we had on that team. It's an experience that will definitely help me in my approach this year."

The veteran leaders on that team whose Cup victory was its third in six seasons included Steve Yzerman, Igor Larionov, Nicklas Lidstrom, Chris Chelios and Avery's current teammate, Brendan Shanahan.

Yesterday, Shanahan was asked if Avery made an impression on him during that time; if he remembered Avery skating with the extras.

"I'll tell you what I remember: I remember Scotty [Bowman] moving his locker out of the main room into the weight room either in the first or second round because Sean was so much of a yapper," Shanahan recalled rather gleefully. "Here's a kid who wasn't even dressing and all the stories in the papers seemed to be about him.

"There was just one too many Sean Avery exposes to suit Scotty, so he moved him down the hall. He didn't put him with the Black Aces (regular roster players who were consistent scratches), but kind of halfway down, on his own. It made the locker room much quieter, but getting through workouts became much more of a hassle.

"I think the one [story] that tipped the scales was the 'Win A Date With Sean Avery.' That was the straw that broke the camel's back."

Avery, who played 36 regular-season games with the Red Wings that year (five less than necessary to qualify for getting his name on the Cup), grimaced upon hearing Shanahan's account.

"You know what? I don't think it was Scotty at all who moved me out of the room," Avery said. "I think it was those guys, Brendan and Stevie."

    *
Though Henrik Lundqvist returned to work after missing Monday's practice with cold- and flu-like symptoms, Jaromir Jagr missed yesterday's practice for the same reason. "Bit of a cold," Tom Renney said. ... Karel Rachunek, who went hard the previous two days attempting to come back from the MCL sprain he sustained March 13, was given yesterday off. ... Though the head coach allowed he might change his mind, Renney said he's leaning toward using Steve Valiquette, who also never has dressed for an NHL playoff match, as Lundqvist's backup for Game 1, even though Kevin Weekes is ready to go. ... Matt Cullen worked on the left point of the second power-play unit, with Paul Mara his partner and Shanahan, Avery and Marcel Hossa the forwards.

Avery has been a huge catalyst for this team- i think he will make the hugest of differences in these playoffs.
