  • Anyone think Clemens and Torre should have been somewhat acknowledged during the last game ceremony? Apparently they are both hurt by the snub.

I can go either way on Clemens but I do think Torre should have gotten mentioned. The guy did win 4 WS. Hell,...almost all the guys from those 4 teams were there.

i was clinging to some small hope that LA would excuse both torre and mattingly and allow them to fly out to NY for the ceremonies.

clemens? i could go either way as well.

Did they do a thing for managers? I don't remember. If they did, then obviously Torre should be mentioned. But if they didn't mention Casey Stengel....As for Clemens, he was only here for 5 years. It's not like he was a career yankee, or they honored Wade Taylor and Scott Kamienicki and not Roger

It was for fear of boos. Otherwise he definitely should've been included. They didn't do anything for managers.

    Yankees are officially eliminated. :(

Now the only thing to root for are personal achievements. Mussina 1 more for 20 wins.

in a season full of highs and lows, would love to see the yanks end the season with a strong series in fenway, and get moose his 20th on the last game of the season.

i'm surprised they eclipsed the 85 win mark. seems like they played the season the same way they play a game: not there in the beginning, make a little noise in the middle, try hard as hell at the end, only to come up a tad short.

a fenway sweep to end the season would be nice. doubt it will happen, though. all i really would like to see is moose getting to 20.

  • Hooray the Yankees are eliminated! May the team return to the doldrums of the late 80's and early 90's!

Seriously though, you need to fire your GM. $200+ payroll and he can't put together a decent pitching staff?

I think Torre deserved an acknowledgment in the final home game, he was at the helm when they won those WS. But they were only 'officially' acknowledging players

as for Clemens... I'm not surprised. I don't believe he was 'heartbroken' I read he was 'clutching his wife's hand on one side and his mother in law's on the other' when he was watching it on TV! Come on! I don't buy that either.

Derek's speech was awesome. That's going to be an iconic moment. They'll show it when he retires. And that walk around the ball park was unbelieveable. I wished I was there!

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/yankees/2008/09/23/2008-09-23_hank_steinbrenner_rips_divisional_playof.html

"The biggest problem is the divisional setup in major league baseball. I didn't like it in the 1970s, and I hate it now," Steinbrenner wrote. "Baseball went to a multidivision setup to create more races, rivalries and excitement. But it isn't fair. You see it this season, with plenty of people in the media pointing out that Joe Torre and the Dodgers are going to the playoffs while we're not."

"This is by no means a knock on Torre - let me make that clear-but look at the division they're in. If L.A. were in the AL East, it wouldn't be in the playoff discussion. The AL East is never weak."

"I'm happy for Joe, but you have to compare the divisions and the competition," Steinbrenner wrote. "What if the Yankees finish the season with more wins than the Dodgers but the Dodgers make the playoffs? Does that make the Dodgers a better team? No."

Anyone happen to catch Girardi's post game interview Thursday. Apparently Rivera told Girardi his body was cranky but Cashman said it was a shoulder thing Girardi did not come off sounding good answering the questions and did not display good body language. Managers and coaches lie about injuries all the time but it seems dubious if the general manager is apologizing to the media about the actions of his manager.

  • I was worried when they used him Saturday, after pitching Friday, and knowing that he would pitch in the Stadium finale no matter what. I read today that Mariano said it's been bothering him all year, and that he would be pitching thru it if they weren't knocked out already. That's comforting, if true. Sounds like he'll have minor surgery and be back in time for spring training. If not, you'd figure Joba would close, and be transitioned into the rotation again when Mo is healthy.

    Congrats to the "Moose"

Finally getting his 20 victory season.

He should get to the Hall of Fame, Gammon's thinks so, so it must be true.

They had a deeper starting rotation the last couple of weeks. They stuck with Pinson and Rasner too long. Brett Gardner came into his own. Robbie started to hit. Bruney, Coke and Joba helped the bullpen get stronger.

$70M more than any other team in 2008 salaries, $166M more than the Rays ... they didn't deserve the playoffs.
