    Joba's not playoff tested yet

I'm just remembering how he looked a little worn at the beginning of the season and I believe that's a big reason why we're playing catch up right now.

did you know that hoffman was traded for gary sheffield?

    Didn't realize that.

I was shocked the other day to hear that the Mariners originally had David Ortiz and traded him to the Twins for Dave Hollins in 96.

Could you imagine if the Mariners would have kept him and had him bat in the late 90's in the same lineup as Griffey, A-Rod and Edgar. Ortiz was still a first baseman at the time.

i'm still amazed now how little of a transaction it was considered when the red sox first signed him in 2003.

can't blame it all on Mo

the starting pitching was iffy and the hitting...eesh...

and there were all those injuries

Lee Smith had 472 or something. And he's not exactly a hall of famer. Rivera would've probably had that many by now. If he were playing for the Padres.

I was living in Utah in the late 90's and the Twins AAA team was there. Sickest minor league team ever.

Ortiz, Hunter, Mientkewicz, & Jacque Jones. They blew everyone out everytime I'd go to a game. The thin-air helped as well I'm sure. :)

true but they might have been sharper in the daytime with a good night rest as opposed to playing extra inning ball at 3am?

possibly, but the days of playing a daygame on a friday except for wrigley field are a thing of the past.

on a sidenote, i'm watching the postgame on channel 9 and jeez russ salzberg's voice is kind of annoying.

oh did you hear that Warner Wolf sound byte in the Bronx is Burning? Wow what a flashback. I think they sacked him in 2001? I'll never forget seeing him on TV doing 'regular news' when I was watching the coverage for 9/11, when I was at work. ..

and they had the 1010 Wins radio in there too.

by the way, i responded to their fan blog question on the website on mussina and that was the first one that he read.

    oh yeah?

    cool

who's fan blog website? What was the question? What did he answer?

    That's cool.

Ok off to bed. I'm going for a part time gig tomorrow to try to make some $ until I get something perm. It's in a fancy karaoke/restaurant spot in Times Square. If I get it y'all will have to come down and sing PJ tunes :)

heres the story with the gang associated yankee hats.

Unfortunately i am unable to link the actual video clip- but you can click it right there at the NY1 website.

clearly it shows the interlocking NY hats with the bandannas that i described previously.

Its sad that a 9 year old boy was among the whistleblowers on this, and it describes how New Era has asked retailers to pull all the hats. ( no guarantees that they will pull them off the shelves either - all the hype has likely made these hats more desirable to all the thugs )

    NY1 Yankee Gang Hats
Some Yankees Hats Pulled From Shelf Following Community Protest

    August 25, 2007

For those who are in the market for a Yankees cap, it might be best to stick to the white, blue and pinstripes varieties, as a hat manufacturer asked retailers around the city Friday to pull some colorful Yankees hats from the shelves because of a link to gang colors. NY1’s Lily Jamali filed the following report.

While colorful baseball caps might seem innocuous to some children, to other kids, the caps, manufactured by New Era, carry a meaning they would rather not be associated with.

“The crown represents [the gang the] Latin Kings,” explained Brandon Vargas, 9, of what he believed the colors and symbols signify. “The blue bandanna with the grey means Crips [gang]. And the red and black means the Bloods [gang].

A back-to-school shopping trip on Monday caught East Harlem resident Johnny Rivera off guard.
Rivera wanted to buy one of the colorful caps for his son, and had thought nothing of them, at first.

“It was [my son] who said this crown might be construed as something possibly associated with a gang,” said Rivera. “I said ‘what kind of a gang?’ He said maybe the Latin Kings. I said ‘why? It’s just a New York Yankee hat.’ It’s quite nice. I liked it and the crown to me said ‘you're the king!’ That’s great.”

Rivera and his son brought the caps to Ultimate Karate in East Harlem. Karate instructor Richard Garcia said two ex-gang members he trains confirmed that the color combination was no coincidence.

“They brought it to my attention that it was blatant,” said Garcia. “That blue and grey in combination was definitely Crips.”

Thursday, some community members gathered together at Ultimate Karate to protest at stores along Third Avenue in East Harlem. That helped convince New Era, which has a licensing agreement with Major League Baseball, to ask merchants to pull the caps from the shelves.

In a statement, New Era said it would cooperate with the wishes of those who wanted the Yankees caps yanked.

Even so, there are those who remain unconvinced that there is a connection between these colors and gangs.

“Those are just basically styles,” said one local resident. “All the other hats have colors. Those are styles, with no gang affiliation.”

As for the Yankees, they say they had no role in approving the caps and that the club was completely unaware of them. Team officials say Major League Baseball has assured them that no such product will be manufactured in the future.

  • right now, i have no interest in discussing the yankees, the four-hour rain delay, or bob davidson's astonishing level of professionalism. but this gang merch thing is really interesting...
a black cap with a gold team logo and an embroidered crown, a symbol favored by the Latin Kings.

wow. i didn't realize that this was their symbol. maybe i should have known. i work for a minor league basketball team whose team colors are black and gold and whose symbol is--you guessed it--a gold crown.

anyone want to take a wild guess as to what our merch looks like?

we even carry a black baseball cap with a gold embroidered crown, probably very similar to the one mentioned above. i didn't know. nobody did. i'd probably be really bent out of shape about this if i actually cared about my job. oh well...

but the point is that these things happen. people aren't always as aware as they should be. personally, i always found it amusing that you could buy yankees and giants jerseys in bright red. the only people i ever see wearing these alternate jerseys are kids in brooklyn who also happen to be wearing matching hats and/or bandanas.

bloods are scary as fuck. i see them all the time in brooklyn, but i've never been bothered. if you don't make eye contact, you should be fine. also, there are certain parts of brooklyn were you might want to consider avoiding the 2, 3, 5, E, and G trains after sunset.

goes to show you my ignorance, if i had ever seen anyone wearing them, which i can't even remember, i wouldn't have thought they're tied into the gang colors.
