  • Whoa check out those angry back woods Mexicans.

I bet they were making taco's and tortillas when they got interrupted by the helicopter, so they got ticked.

    Sigh...Mexico...

First Thought That Popped In My Head Upon Seeing These Images: Who was the fucking idiot who went on this shoot and forgot the high powered telephoto lens? Man the pictures really suck donkey. And yeah, i got that they were aiming highly sophisticated terrorist weapons at the helicopter. ;)

    See JeffBr's comment.
    He isn't being an ass,
he's making an intelligent (though, perhaps controversial) observation.

He's saying the assumption that there was some "golden age" of tribal harmony with self, eachother, and nature is largely an erroneous one.

Man has always had some form of adversarial or antagonistic relationships, within the tribe, and with other tribes, and with the larger forces of nature. Further, the notion that the primitive man was some how at peace or one with himself and in a state of relative bliss is an unproven and likely naive notion.

I think that is all he was really getting at.

    Before reacting to words,
we should all try to understand the words as they are written.

That is something i struggle with in this place all the time.
Reactionary responses that fail to even account for the sentiment the original poster was actually expressing are rampant around this place. Read, research, then respond.

    :D

Actually it was a simple question. Why do you consider these people to be savage? You referred me to the original poster-racist-as evidenced by his remarks-but have yet to answer the fucking question.

it wasn't a racist remark, for crying out loud.
    settle down.

go read what "noble savage" means.

first, "savage" as implicated in the term "noble savage" is a reference to ANY peoples who do not have contact with "modern" life and contrivances.

Tybird is just refuting another poster who is insinuating that these people are "at one with the living world".
That reference directly envokes the notion of "the noble savage", which is a literary term.

His response about there being no such thing as a noble savage was an etymological reference to the term, not some racist remark.

settle the fuck down, and understand what you are talking about before you start insulting people and jumping up and down like a raving looney.

    jesus, people.
    like i said.
    Read. RESEARCH. THEN respond.

If I was to smile and I held out my hand

    1. fierce, ferocious, or cruel; untamed: savage beasts.

Who is to say they are not?

That reference directly envokes the notion of "the noble savage", which is a literary term.

Which also implies meaning, whatever you call it. The definition is listed above.
His response about there being no such thing as a noble savage was an etymological reference to the term, not some racist remark.
agreed, there is no such thing as a noble savage-so why use the phrase in reference to these people?
settle the fuck down, and understand what you are talking about before you start insulting people and jumping up and down like a raving looney.
interesting you see me jumping up and down like a raving looney, It's not about that. Simply a matter of principle.
    jesus, people.
    like i said.

    So I have.

Times like these I wish the Prime Directive wasn't from fiction. I really hope those tribes are left alone.

Thats the definition for "SAVAGE", not "NOBLE savage".
You still have yet to get that straight.

Well, Tybrid was saying they aren't.
And Tybrid would be in the company of many good philosphers in recent history who have argued against the romanticized notion of a "noble savage".
    Commy wrote:

    Uh. "Agreed"?
Now you've just reversed 180 and agreed with the guy you called a racist two posts.

    "Why use the phrase"?
Well, it seemed to change your mind.
    Lol.

I still don't think you really get it.
Is there ANY one else out there that can jump in and deflect some of this heat, and help get a rational argument out to help explain this?

    This is just silly.

All Tybrid did was respond to someone who was idealizing the life of "native" or "indigenous" tribal peoples. His response merely asserted that there is no such thing as a "noble savage".

In his argument, he reference an (apparently not so) well known literary term.

Why he got called a racist, and a savage hick for his remarkably literate comment is beyond me.

It is one of those times I need to get the full impact of the whole thing by reminding myself that I am not watching Apocolypto (spell check??sorry if I screwed that up........) and that these are real people living NOW, you know? It puts my sorry complaints in a bit of a different light.

That is always a good thing.............

but yes, this was amazing and I am sure there are things we don't know about as well going on in the world like this. that is so cool; that there are things that we know nothing about that will make it interesting to see.

Why this has become more than my simple question , 'why do you think these people are savage?...' is beyond me.

To use the term noble savage, in reference to these people, holds a certain inference...savage was still the term used.

Apparently there are college courses on this very subject http://faculty.washington.edu/ellingsn/Noble_Savage.html

The term "noble savage" is a historical term for those who used to romanticize the aboriginals. When the term was coined, aboriginals were referred to as "savages" yet a whole mythology was created mainly to glorify them even if it was inaccurate.

sounds like an outdated term used for any number of reasons.
  • i dont know the answer here, but there is something disturbing to me about keeping these people isolated. They aren't animals for cryin out loud. If i were in one of these tribes and saw brief glimpses of some incredibly advanced civilization, i'd want to know about it.

    you hear me, aliens?

Every time I took communion growing up it felt like I was being sodomized by the pope......but that's probably best left to another thread.
