I may not be around to see this but I wonder what other changes will go along with this change in our population?

Interesting article ... 46% is still substantial, and "fading fast" is kind of a dumb way to say it.
  • This means the end of the United States, as we know it.

Nations are the people who create them, nothing more. No other people could have created the Islamic caliphates, the Mayan civilization, or the dynasties of China. Only those people at that time.

Likewise, no other people could have created the United States as we know it. Where they go, so goes the nation they built.
All I know is that to see, and not to speak, would be the great betrayal.

We hispanics are taking over. After the US it's on to Canada.

are the creators the federalists or the antifederalists? the sons or the daughters of liberty? three-fifths of the slave population who were counted? or the whole slave population who's work built and strengthened the economy?

As wrong as slavery is, it made the industrial revolution possible.

    Sure all those people.

South Americans built South American nations. It's obvious to the casual observer that those nations are very different from the USA.

To infuse the USA with vast numbers of people from those nations is to turn the USA into those nations, plain and simple.

First generation immigrants yes, but I have Mexican friends who are second and third generation here and the can't even speak spanish and don't even like the culture. Chicago accents and all..

And what about with Polish immigrants? There's just as many of them around here. Please stop asking me if I speak Polish because I have blonde fucking hair.

This country was built by immigrants. I'm sure that the with each tide of immigration, be it Irish, Italian, Polish etc..., the people here thaught that the country would loose it's identity. Each time they where wrong. With each passing generation the children and granchildren became more Americanized. In many instances these immirants even introduced new traditions and customes that would eventually be absorbed into American culture, making it more rich and diverse.

So the US will not cease to exist just because of a demagephical shift. It will be the same country it has always been.

I welcome it. Really, I believe it's already happened anyway. Exactly how is someone classified as white anyway? Is there a test?

I don't know about a test, but the government and employers ask you if you're white and you sure as hell better say "yes," crackah.

Say "no" if you want financial aid, though ;)

I've said "unknown" or "mixed" before just because they can't give me a definition of what any of the categories mean.

    1. There is an inherent essentialism in this that I dont much like. The people that "built America" are mostly dead, after all, and it's their children and childrens children that have continued building it since. And who are these "people" particularly?

    2. Had 100 million hispanics moved in tomorrow, that could have threatened the nation's culture and "way of life". The thing about this gradual shift in the population is that every child that grows up in the meantime, will be essentially american in every way. So even if they generally have another skin tone in 30 years, they are raised within the nation as countless of immigrants' children before them.

    3. The culture always changes, things are always going away, and things are always changing (and according to the older people that change is always for the worst).

    Peace

The change doesn't bother me at all. I will use my family as an example. My parents immigrated to this country from Cuba. Our grandparents barely spoke a word of English and considered themselves Cubans till the day they died. Our parent's learned to start adapting to this country. learned the language, became American citizens and while still holding on to their culture and Cuban identity started to integrate into American culture. My generation, the first born in this country, pretty much considers themselves Cuban-American. We are proud of our heritage but we are also proud of being Americans, we are fluent in Spanish and hold on to many of the customs from our parent's homeland. Much like our parents we blend the two cultures, even more so than they. Our children have no association with their grandparent's culture, consider themselves Americans and can barely speak two words in Spanish. The only connection they have to their hispanic heritage is their last names.

Like many immigrants before us this will happen to the large influx of hispanic and latino immigrants. Yes the first generation to come here will be the least Americanized, but with each following generation they will become more American. So these irrational fears that somehow the US is going to loose it's identity are pointless because history has shown us that that will not be the case.

I guess I already answered question number 2 but just in case anyone missed it I am hispanic.

i have been reading this since about my HS years. it has slowly been happening for years. we still have a decent % of new immigrnts, we have races/cultures intermarrying, etc. all of this contributes to the changing face of america. i see it as a good thing. the old 'melting pot' analogy is dead, assimilation to the point of losing your cultural identity is an idea that has come and gone. i think seeking a balance between total assimilation and holding onto your individual cultural identity is what we have, and will continue to, be working on. it does change a lot...the influences, the desires....and i think it's all a good thing. :) i LOVE the diversity of the NYC metro region and i am always amazed when i travel elsewhere and how sooo many places are not like my home.
    Stay with me...

It's pretty obvious we are already one of the most diverse countries in the world.

Look at the olympic teams. People are from all over the world historically.

I think the worry of losing cultural identity is a little overplayed it's celebrated as far as I can tell. The US is a hodgepodge of every immigrants culture superimposed on one another and then built for speed and easy delivery.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
  • i recently found out i'm 1/16 mexican (and already knew i was 1/4 native), so i'm practically hispanic already!

i'll just change my name to Smithriguez and i'll be fine.

That's kind of my point - what percentage do you need to achieve to be classified as Hispanic?

...and is it even possible to accurately check all the genes in your pool to even know if the 1/16 is accurate?

who knows. its all kinda pointless anyway. Hispanic isnt even a race. and culturally speaking, most hispanics i know arent any different than americans anyway. i dont know if its because of high rates of "americanization", or we are just similar culture or what.
