    he's only 15.
and it isn't that he would want to go.
it's the fact that he supports the war but would be UNWILLING to go. "writing checks that others pay".
maybe if we weren't in the middle of this sort of war right now, he would feel differently, i don't know.

it's okay to stay home, and find another way to make a living.

    Seriously.

If I could tell my 19-year-old nephew to do the same, when he needed to hear it, I would've.

Johnny's going to Iraq this year instead.

It's cool that the two of you can even have these discussions.

the last thing I wanted to do was talk to my mom.

I thought the world had bypassed her, and was waiting for me to eclipse it.

I thought I could drop out of high school and make my way to being a rock star, or a writer, or an artist.

I thought I owned the world.

Here I am at 42, miffed at the world because it doesn't even recognize me, let alone bow down to me, or listen to a word I say.

15 is a tender age. Treat it tenderly, don't crush its spirit.

    But...PLEASE....educate it.

each war and it's purposes/causes are different you can't compare wwii w/ something like iraq or panama or nicaragua

I think they recently bumped the age up.

    And the weight.

War sucks, but sometimes you have to fight. I'm not saying I support every war but when someone is starting shit you can't always use diplomacy to get yourself out of a bad situation. If the other person has the intent kill you there's not many options left for you.

I don't think you have fight in a war to support it. If everyone who supported the war enlisted and left their jobs, what would happen to the economy. I'm not going to pretend to be an economical expert or anything but it just doesn't seem like a good thing. Some people need to stick around and support their country by doing there job and making sure day-to-day life in their country doesn't suffer too much because of the war. Some people aren't made to be soldiers and if they can serve their country in some other way, good for them.

We have a volunteer military. Get over it.

i disagree with the topic at hand.

certain people have certain skills which they are good at. Those in the military, for the most part, are much better equipped, as a person, to fight a war than those not in the military. It's not like people are being drafted into service unwillingly. hey do have a choice, although those military recruiters sound very persuasive(one just called me last week).
I for one would only go to war if it was in defense of my country. And really I wouldn't want to go out there with guns, I'd much rather do it hand to hand combat, so you at least have a say in your life, as opposed to guns. But that sentence deviates pretty far from the topic.

I see this all the time. But I wonder how people feel about treaties and safety in numbers. I think these are huge deterents that help prevent wars. It also means that as a country we have to be prepared to go to war in defense of other countries.

I do wish that all governments placed away higher value ona soldiers life. It seems war is too easy now and not nearly messy enough. In a world where millions can die of malnutrition in Africa due to out inaction as people, governments and countries, I think we're all more than a little desensitized to the value of life. However I don't make much distinction between a soldiers life lost due to a stupid war and a child dying of Malaria or malnutrition in Africa. They are both stupid, preventable deaths that make us all look bad as humans. At least with a war you can say somethin gbetter is trying to be achieved, I still haven't heard an excuse for our inaction in places like Darfur or Africa.
