Abortion

On this 35th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, I would like to share my views on the issue of abortion.
Life begins at the point of conception. No one can deny that after a human being is conceived it will develop into the very same being as those debating this issue. What astounds me is that those who favor abortion went through an identical development stage as the being they are condemning to death. Would these very same people agree that a similiar choice should have been made about their own existence? Abortion today is used primarily as a birth control of convenience because people are too self-centered to take precautions. They prefer their own pleasurable self-indulgence over the care and sanctity of the life they created. What ever happened to taking responsibility for one's actions in this country? Is it too much to ask a woman who has conceived to place the child into adoption? Nine months of discomfort is nothing compared to life in prison for voluntary manslaughter! Does the father of the child have a say in this? And what about the constitution of the United States? Are not all people conceived in this country deserving of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? I believe abortion is a crime against humanity and should be outlawed. We need to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision and get back to cherishing life in this country. For a country that murders it's children cannot be far from self destruction.

The ones that do end up in prison should have been aborted.
I believe Roe v Wade should stand, intact, as a Supreme Court decision, to allow the mother/pregnant woman to make the choice.

"The really hardcore people will tell you that life begins at fertilization. When the sperm fertilizes the egg. But even after the egg is fertilized, it's still 6-7 days before it reaches the uterus and pregnancy begins. And not every egg makes it that far. 80% of a womans fertilized eggs are rinsed and flushed out of her body once a month during those delightful few days she has. They wind up on sanitary napkins and yet they are fertilized eggs. So, basically what these anti-abortion people are telling us is that any woman who has had more than one period is a serial killer." -- George Carlin

"Abortion today is used primarily as a birth control of convenience"......... this has got to be one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever read. I'd bet the majority of people choosing termination of a pregnancy do so with a lot of thought and soul searching. And how about slamming some of the men who are the other half of the unwanted conception. You'd probably find that most people who choose this option, are couples who make that decision jointly. In the case of a woman who finds herself on her own because the father ran out on her upon discovering their pregnancy, well he's pretty much given up his right to have a say. The circumstances surrounding unwanted pregnancy are many and varied, and to try and lump them all in together and simply say the woman is irresponsible is ludicrous. So is saying "is it asking too much to put a child up for adoption". Frankly, yes it is. For most women who find themselves in these circumstances, choosing to terminate IS the responsible decision.
First of all, looks like you’re new so welcome to the board. (I’m relatively new too, though, so maybe it’s not yet my place to welcome people.)
Secondly, thanks for sharing your views on the issue of abortion. I particularly appreciate it because it gives me the opportunity to share mine.
Third, since you have touched on many issues and I don’t yet know how to break up quotes, I’ll respond to each with a different post. I'm sorry if it turns out to be long. (Although, I'm assuming you're looking for some serious discussion.)
Maybe. Although I respect life & people, I don’t believe that it’s necessarily in everyone’s best interest to be born or to remain alive. (I’m talking about the person’s best interest, not society’s, so there’s no death penalty reference here.) There are many occasions on which a person may actually believe that it is in his/her best interest to end his/her life – or for it never to have begun in the first place. So I do believe abortion to be a valid choice – regardless of when “life” begins.
Although I realize this might not be a popular comparison, I often feel that abortion is similar to euthanasia. I would “kill” my grandmother if it were in her best interest, so why wouldn’t I show the same consideration for my unborn child?
I wouldn’t kill my grandmother against her wishes, and if my fetus could express its wishes and it desired to be born, I believe that choice should be respected. But since a fetus can’t express its wishes (and likely has no capacity to form wishes yet anyway), it’s up to the pregnant woman to decide what is in the best interest of her would-be child. I have no reason to believe that being born is always in the best interest of every potential child. Do you?
From where do you get this information? How do you know that women who have abortions are “too self-centered to take precautions” or that they necessarily “prefer their own pleasurable self-indulgence over the care and sanctity of the life they created”? Those are such blanket generalizations about such personal motivations. Do you really believe that all these women can be lumped into the same category and that their circumstances are not unique?
And abortion as the birth control of convenience? That seems like an oxymoron since abortion is not really convenient. Plus, why do you refer to “abortion today”? Are you suggesting that abortion in the past was different? How so? And why do you only refer to "this country" when only 3% of abortions happen in this country?
Here are some facts:
- Over 1/3 of women will have an abortion at some point in their lives.
- The majority of women who have abortions DO use birth control. But birth control fails – more than you probably think. For example, 1500 women per year have abortions after getting pregnant while relying on theirs or their partner’s sterilization to prevent pregnancy.
- A woman who used abortion as birth control and wanted 2 children would have about 30 abortions by the age of 45.
- Poor women and women of color have disproportionately high rates of unintended pregnancy and abortion. The majority of women having abortions earn less than 200% the federal poverty level. (That’s $27,380 for a single mom with one child.)
- The majority of women who have abortions are mothers.
- The majority of women having abortions cite responsibility to other individuals (such as existing children) as one of their primary reasons for ending the pregnancy.
(These are U.S. statistics. PM me for citations; they are too numerous to list here.)
It’s a fallacy to suggest that women have abortions because they’re irresponsible. Most women who have sex and don’t want to get pregnant use contraception. And since most of the women having abortions are poor mothers, sometimes ending a pregnancy is the most responsible decision a woman can make.
Sometimes it is too much to ask. Suggesting that carrying a pregnancy to term amounts to nothing more than “nine months of discomfort” is disrespectful to the thousands of women who have had faced difficult, high-risk, and incapacitating pregnancies. Furthermore, carrying a pregnancy to term is actually considerably more dangerous than having an abortion (71 times more dangerous if your abortion is during the first 9 weeks of pregnancy, as most are). And, just as unintended pregnancy and abortion rates are disproportionately high for women of color, so are maternal mortality rates.
Being pregnant isn't like having gas for 9 months, where it's a little uncomfortable but doesn't affect any other part of your life, like your livelihood or your ability to care for your children. And for some people, it's much worse than for others. Carrying a pregnancy to term and then placing the child for adoption is much easier said than done.
The “father” frequently does have a say in it. But certainly many of them choose abortion as well. I know there are lots of times when women DON'T let the man have a say in it - or just don't tell them - because they believe he'll pressure them into HAVING an abortion, and they want to be sure and make the right choice and not just do something because they're pressured into it. (You know, I wonder if there could ever be a study that determined which happens more often: for the man to pressure the woman to have an abortion she doesn't want or for the woman to have an abortion against the man's wishes.)
For those who want the woman to continue HER pregnancy, it’s always great when both people can have input, but it still must always be the woman’s choice. Aside from the obvious fact that it’s the woman’s body, it’s the woman who ultimately bears the responsibility of parenthood. Sure, I like to think that most men take responsibility for their children, but women can never be 100% sure they won’t bail out at any given moment. As long as it’s ultimately the woman’s responsibility, it’s got to ultimately be the woman’s choice.
How much prison time should a woman get for having an abortion because she:
- couldn’t work during her pregnancy but had to feed her children?
- was raped?
- found out that her “baby” had a fetal abnormality that would allow it to be born alive but to require neonatal intensive care at thousands of dollars a day until it certainly died within a month?
- was 12 years old?
What if she was your sister? Your daughter? Your mother?
Wait - I just realized you already said abortion should carry a life sentence. Poor raped 12-year-old. That'll sure keep her from ever getting knocked up again!
hahahahahahah I love George Carlin!!!! Maybe he should run for president. George Carlin at Bonnoroo?
How the fuck can you tell a woman who was gang raped in an alley , that she HAS TO DELIVER that child? If you start making laws that say that, then she is going to end up getting rid of the child some other way, and chances are she'll hurt herself in the process.
Untill their will grows tired

seriously, you don't have to be a raped 12 year old. I'm 30, educated, have enough money to make due with a baby. but the idea of being pregnant sickens me as a woman. I take my pills, use a backup, and I don't have sex very often, but I'll tell you right now if I ever pee on a stick and it comes back positive, planned parenthood, here I come!
hooray for RvW!
This is where I have a problem. You seem excited about the possibility of having an abortion. People like you make me feel sick.
Abortion is a tough issue. For every argument you have about its need for rape, fetal abnormalities, etc. You have arguments about it being a form of birth control for drunk coeds.
I am glad its in place, but it is very sad when used for many reasons.
I fully support a woman's right to choose.
You should learn to live with your actions.
You got to spend it all
dude, I would never be "excited" about having to have to an abortion, which is why I'm damn careful not to get preggers in the first place. I feel pretty confident that I'm safe enough that I wouldn't have to, but you never know. that's the thing, you never know. I'm just damn glad it's there if I ever need it. Abortions suck to go through. it's painful and emotional and everything else. no one WANTS to get one. I am a firm believer in taking every precaution necessary if you don't want a baby (including not having sex) and I don't think that anyone under at least 18 or 20 should have sex at all. but I don't want the government making decisions about this stuff either.
People who say "people like you" make me feel sick.
A bunch of cells is not a fucking baby. Quit manipulating the dilema.
its just a couple cells whats the big deal??
